interactivecode··on Norway court rules against Facebook owner Meta in privacy case
I've been working at EU startups and tech for a while now. There isn't much worry about data laws. All the data you need for the real product you can get without even getting close to breaking any privacy laws.

It only gets very complicated when you start forwarding that data to 3rd parties, intensively tracking + storing user behaviour and engineering patterns aimed at deceiving how you use the data.

If you're that worried about keeping up to date on these types of rules, you can subscribe to the EU data protection newsletter, which will be a fairly decent overview on what's going on: https://edps.europa.eu/press-publications/publications/newsl...

interactivecode··on Elixir saves Pinterest $2M a year in server costs
While the google images thing is kinda shitty. Pinterest is really really good at image search and image recommendations.
interactivecode··on Homebuyers must ‘learn to live’ with near-7% mortgage rates says RE/MAX chairman
Can you imagine having such unexpected jumps in housing costs and not even owning your home? That would be way way worse
interactivecode··on FDA says aspartame is safe, disagreeing with WHO finding
Actually banning fossil fuel cars from dense city centers has been proven to be healthier for the people living there. So yeah would be great if they could ban them everywhere.
interactivecode··on Difference Between Implicit and Explicit Animations in SwiftUI
Mixing and matching 2-3 UI / state frameworks will always be an hassle.
interactivecode··on Why is there no government-built social media?
Which is “totally” different than US corporations. The American ones also comply with government requests, supply back doors or capture the traffic at an ISP level.
interactivecode··on Apple Shuts Down “My Photo Stream”
XP got patches for so long just because many many governments and very large corporations convinced microsoft to keep extending it.
interactivecode··on Ancient Maya city discovered in Mexican jungle

interactivecode··on APIs for content sites must be free
Don’t connect to any ISP?
interactivecode··on APIs for content sites must be free
If reddit did that from the start we wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place?
interactivecode··on APIs for content sites must be free
Then don’t run a content site?
interactivecode··on TELO is a tiny electric truck the size of a Mini with a bed as big as a Hummer’s
Ugh still 50k for a car. Why can we have a basic car like this for like 10-20k?
interactivecode··on Show HN: I made CSS Pro, a re-imagined Devtools for web design
9 other subscriptions and I only have to work 0 hours a week
interactivecode··on Show HN: I made CSS Pro, a re-imagined Devtools for web design
the way you calculate savings is not really true in reality. even if I can now do my work 4 hours a week faster. I'm not immediately getting a pay bump, my boss just gives me 4hours of extra work.

It won't give me 4 hours a week back, because my boss still reserves my time for those 4 hours.

My household won't have an extra 30 euro a month to spend on those dinners. actually it will directly have 30 euro less to spend on dinners. so yeah all those considerations make me cautious paying for more subscriptions.

interactivecode··on Fokker could return in 2035 with hydrogen jetliner
Fokker will return in the year of the linux desktop
interactivecode··on Layoffs push down scores on Glassdoor: this is how companies respond
Honestly too little nuanced reviews, too much 5 star reviews or 1 star reviews all signal the same thing to me: toxic workplace.

With smaller companies/startups >60 people, a better signifier is very little glassdoor activity. Someone who works in a healthy workplace with fair, well paying salaries has no reason to ever even open that dumpster fire of a website.

interactivecode··on Study finds 90% of Australian teachers can't afford to live where they teach
The problem isn’t that the 30% rule isn’t a good idea anymore. The problem is that for so much of the population it isn’t realistic anymore.

Also I wouldn’t be surprised if a terms like housing stress based on the 30% rule is part of official terminology. So it can be used for discussing rental rates, morgage prices and legislation.

Looking at averages like you propose isn’t useful if something bad impacts a whole population.

interactivecode··on EU approves controversial Dutch farm buy-out plan to meet climate goals
Because we didn’t do shit to address our climate emissions for the last decade(s)
interactivecode··on Mojo might be the biggest thing to happen in programming for decades
Honestly without a UI framework programming languages are kinda useless. Ecosystem is key to day to day usefulness compile time is secondary to that.
interactivecode··on Rate The Landlord: Anonymously share information with tenants like you
In Europe its with the idea that even if a tenant is put on the street it will cost money. Plus it will usually create bigger problems than what ever months of rent are missed.

It’s similar to the fact that giving homeless people a place to live for free is cheaper than continually kicking them on the streets

interactivecode··on Red Hat layoffs spark calls to unionize, CEO wades in
It’s a bit of a balance, more aggressive approaches work well when there is high growth. But are more painful when things are bad.

Unions often slow down change, in bad times this means more job security and protections. In good times they might act slower.

interactivecode··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
Perhaps in SF the victims of violent crime are in a higher social bracket than in other cities?

Aka more rich people are the target in SF compared to other cities where mostly lower class people are effected?

interactivecode··on We achieved a 6-fold increase in Podman startup speed
unless the update requires version updates on multiple services which means the versioning and rollback has the same effect as a more monolithic codebase. but with the added complexity of not knowing how it all impacts each other.

In my experience updates to smaller services are often trivial, or for updates that are actually impactful it would be way easier to coordinate in a monolithic codebase.

interactivecode··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
indeed because the deadlines are rigid and the work load estimates are inaccurate.
interactivecode··on 'The People's Hospital' treats uninsured and undocumented
Again why do we need hospitals to make money? Aren't national expenses like healthcare a good place to use taxes for?
interactivecode··on 'The People's Hospital' treats uninsured and undocumented
If people don't get healthcare but still have costs of managing their symptoms. Or when people die at home, those costs aren't in the hospital books.
interactivecode··on Kottke.org is 25 years old today
Moderation is real continued work, not something you can do once and solve. Putting up an real life event at any size requires moderation or guiding the visitors. I don't know why people in tech continue to be surprised about having to take care of their audience.
