interactivecode··on Apple cuts 600 jobs after dropping self-driving car plans
fully agree. Totally ridiculous that a company who makes that much profit is allowed to delete the primary income source of these employees just because they decided to stop their car project.

I would love regulations to make it impossible to eliminate jobs unless the company is bankrupt. Considering how much is of your life is dependent on having an employer, it shouldn't be this easy for a company to toy with that. More so when a company has so much profits.

They could totally offer other positions within the company. If needed support people learning new technologies or languages. Or use these people's expertise to start new projects. but firing it totally unnecessary.

I think it's because all the financial systems for 95% of daily life are not tied to your identity in the same way as in the US.

There is no long trail of credit and debt that will chase you, requiring validation and checks at every step in your life. So getting someone's identity doesn't change much. getting anything from a phone subscription to student loans, to getting jobs is basically equal no matter what. They aren't allowed to block you except in rare situations. They aren't allowed to request a lot of the information you would need in the US.

And if your identity get's stolen in Europe the systems in place are way more flexible and reversible. So if a theft is found, it's effects are reasonably easy to undo.

Ever noticed how identity theft in the US is never directly stolen items or money? It's all about getting access to systems (credit / accounts / banking).

The point is that when your job has an "larger than normal" impact on the course of someone's life you should not be able to ignore that responsibility. Responsibility should be matched with equal sized accountability.

I'd rather have a system that occasionally let someone go free because of insufficient proof than occasionally have people be imprisoned when they are actually innocent.

interactivecode··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
If they would only verify quality and provide safe APIs and paths to safely integrate they can have their platform. The issue is that they are both managing the plantform and (unfairly) participating themselves.

If they had one set of APIs for smartwatches that can be used by them for the apple watch and everyone else for their smartwatches they wouldn’t get sued. But instead they give themselves deep integration into the OS and limit everyone elses access. When you are one of the only available platforms thats not okay.

interactivecode··on Facing reality about the EU is a core requirement for good management
haha, have you seen how many problems the UK created for themselves when they left the EU? It's better to be a part of Europe than not.
interactivecode··on Facing reality about the EU is a core requirement for good management
yes and no. They are free to live and work anywhere in the EU, but through multiple rules they are obligated to pay income, city and employment taxes in the country they live and work.

I've heard that there are long term goals of unifying healthcare, retirement and the way work and local taxes are calculated so that it's more flexible and less based on small local bureaucracy. Similar to what they did with mobile phone subscriptions, where you pay to the country you spend your time in, but can use it anywhere. but that requires a lot more financial systems to interoperate.

> "try again, better this time"

this is so true and kind of hilarious to see Americans not understand this. When a regulation happens and it's day to day effects are not working out great. The answer will always be to regulate more, add more rules and restrict things more.

The EU is inclined not to create regulations at first. They prefer to hold meetings, seminars and inform companies of their effects to encourage them to self regulate. If after years this does not help they will either:

A) create subsidies to help companies implement changes. but only if they have shown they are will to interact with the EU governing bodies.

or

B) Add rules and regulations to force companies to act a certain way.

The beautiful disconnect pointed out in the article where Apple thinks the meetings are negotiation and EU is basically showing that their smiles and friendly words are just formalities and change is happening no matter what Apple thinks or not.

Healthcare is kinda shit in The Netherlands. Long waiting lists even for simple things. Never actually prescribing medication but instead over prescribing paracetamol. Only being able to get a set amount for appointments regardless of actual need.

Sure if you’re in a car crash and urgently need care they will help you without going bankrupt but anything less urgent good luck getting an appointment this week / month / year

Perhaps we should have a system where there is a basic level of housing available for anyone to afford. And anyone who wants something with any luxuries can rent something from a business / landlord?

That way private landlords can run their business how they want, and if a customer sees value in what they offer they can pay for it.

At the same time Tesla / Musk is at trial over manipulation of the stock price: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/jan/28/tesla-tri...

(as a side note I think exactly this is the reason Musk bought twitter; to have more control and protection from stock price manipulation through the platform)

interactivecode··on New Renderers for GTK
Sure canvas can render text, but its filled with problems and limitations. It doesn’t do linewrapping or any of the font rendering correctly. Doesn’t do aliasing correctly. It needs so much hand holding and manual handling to render semi decent that basically all canvas apps just opt out and use html to render text on top of canvas.

Canvas is almost always the wrong choice if you want to do layouts.

From the linked article:

So they clearly have the money to pay their employees. But instead of building a better product they instead mess up the livelihood of 170 people.

interactivecode··on Google's billions make job cuts 'needless' – union
I really believe that if you make billions in profits you should not be allowed to fire people like this. There are so many things you can do to keep people productive when priorities change before you mess up their lives.

At a certain size you carry a responsibility to take care of people

You should give it an other go building on SwiftData and the new Observation API’s. They made leaps and bounds and it’s so much better now!

I’m having a lot of fun with it at the moment. If you stay within the bounds of how they encourage you to build the apps, you can just go go go and with very little work release a fast, stable, native app across all their platforms.

The great strength of SwiftUI is that until they have caught up with UIKit and AppKit you can just drop down to those frameworks. So you can use SwiftUI in 95% of your app and where you run into limitions you can use the lowerlevel NSCollectionView for example. Whats even cooler is that inside that NSCollectionView you can just use SwiftUI views again.
interactivecode··on DoorDash raises minimum pay to $29.93 per hour in NYC
Doordash could just employ delivery drivers to solve this problem. No need for a 100% at will temp work force. They could just hire people part time or full time. And if work is really that surgy they could just have workers on call.

Why does “innovation” have to go hand in hand with fucked up labor practices?

interactivecode··on DoorDash raises minimum pay to $29.93 per hour in NYC
Indeed, it would be better if doordash would just hire full time employees. And vet them before hiring with a regular interview process. Instead of constant punitive surveillance with the threat of instant unemployment.

Can you imagine if your dev job was like this? Picking up jobs to write a single function. And if youre too slow, or one too many tests fail you get sacked.

interactivecode··on Three American climbers solve the 'last great problem in the Himalayas'
outdoor climbing is also usually a completely different style. I've found that often outdoor routes have way more focus on leg work. and that find a good hand hold is way more determined by how well you can read the route rather than how good the holds are in practise. Also people making the routes outside are often way better climbers so they often don't have a good pulse on grading the lower grades. Plus adjusting a routes grade based on feedback isn't really a thing because lowering the grade of a route after it has been set is quite the insult to the credibility of the person who made the route.
