integraton··on Entrepreneur is a silly word, and you sound silly when you call yourself one
"Business owner" implies they currently have sole or majority ownership in a business, but with many companies both big and small, multiple people have ownership stakes. Founders also often don't retain an ownership stake forever, since many businesses change ownership during their lifetimes, and others shut down.

So, in my example above, what if the person only retains a minority ownership stake in the restaurant, sold the two software companies, the property management company failed, and they are now working on a new company of any kind? Does "business owner" really accurately describe what they do?

Note that if you think this kind of example is unusual, in my experience it's relatively common for people who build companies to do so in different domains, either simultaneously or at different stages in their careers.

Honest question: what should someone call themselves when they've started, for example, a restaurant, two software companies, and a property management firm?
integraton··on Entrepreneur is a silly word, and you sound silly when you call yourself one
Complaining about the word "entrepreneur" is itself a bit tacky, since for posers to annoy you that much, you must be spending too much time around them. In the US, it also seems to be a complaint exclusive to the software industry. I don't see anyone complaining about people who open storefronts using the word to describe themselves. And if someone starts businesses in multiple fields, what are they then?

Also, what about anyone who grew up in poverty, worked hard, and was the first person in their family to create a new business, like a bakery or a hair salon. Are they now also running the risk of getting ridiculed and having their accomplishments diminished if they use the word?

Interesting that junk food isn't mentioned. I bet that we could find quite a few examples of where the top consumers of classes of food products are having their health damaged more than the top consumers of marijuana.

I don't know what country you live in, but basically none of what you describe applies to the US. Young finance workers, for example, are among the least culturally influential groups in urban America. Your notion of class dynamics (as illustrated by the "pool-boy" comment) is similarly inapplicable and sounds like something from a developing country.

The notion of "harmony with nature" has to do with balance, conservation, and sustainable development, not the absence of death within the system.
integraton··on Show HN: Breach – A modular browser built on Chromium and Node.js
> I see lack of Windows support mostly as programmers being lazy

"Lazy" would imply that Windows support is somehow a requirement that's being shirked by developers, which frankly it isn't. Microsoft is not entitled to have developers support, expend effort on, or even give a moment's thought to their platforms.

Well, I think this is extremely cool. The concept is great, the minimalist mod_strip is thoughtfully designed, and even as someone who isn't a fan of JavaScript I think it makes a lot of sense in this case.

Not among the microsoft fanboys, clearly, which is the entirely point.

But, you know, why don't you go ahead and regurgitate a Microsoft market phrase since that apparently trumps actual facts. Note that I'm the only person who actually cited a real source with hard numbers in this discussion, and I've been the most downvoted. Go figure. I suppose we've already established that actual facts are irrelevant to you people.

integraton··on Microsoft announces the Surface Pro 3
I agree, what does anything have to do with the Microsoft Surface? As I can tell, it has virtually no traction for "work," which makes it entirely irrelevant outside of the flood of fanboys in announcement discussions on the internet.

Keep telling yourself that. Meanwhile, back here in reality, iOS dominates the enterprise:

integraton··on Show HN: SEO for JavaScript, HTML5 and Single Page Applications
You are not crazy. The single page app trend is solidly in the "peak of inflated expectations" phase of the hype cycle ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hype_cycle ), which is why there exists a subculture of developers who are trying to use the approach for everything, even where it isn't appropriate.

The source of the gender and sexism angle is that Julie Anne Horvath has stated in tweets and comments to the press that her gender was a central factor in this issue. As Valleywag quoted her saying: "Would this happen to a man in the same situation? No."
integraton··on Julie Ann Horvath names harassers
It's about gender because she is directly claiming it's about gender and has done so from the beginning. As valleywag quoted her saying today:

"Would this happen to a man in the same situation? No."

She is wrong, wrong, wrong. Things happen all the time to men in the tech industry that are worse than what she claims happened to her. Even famously so:

integraton··on Julie Ann Horvath names harassers
I've been subjected to worse in the past, and I'm a male. I've seen other men subjected to worse. I know multiple people who left the tech industry altogether after suffering actual psychological abuse.

Regardless of everything else, her continued absurd attempts to link this to gender are disgusting, obviously ridiculous, and thoroughly demonstrate that she's not honestly interested in speaking for people who have suffered abuse by employers.

There are plenty of people who are great at CS fundamentals yet write messy, excessively complex, and/or over engineered code. For many software roles I'd much rather have someone who can write clear, maintainable, and performant code first, with deep knowledge of CS fundamentals only a requirement depending on the nature of the role and product.

It was likely orchestrated by Facebook PR. One way it often works is to have the reporters work closely with a company's PR people to prepare the article, then have it embargoed until the date of the announcement. This is the case for many similar events, including product launches.
