instagib··on What Happened to Abit Motherboards
I had a lot of good luck with Abit motherboards. They did a 3day burn in before shipping.

I like they show schematics in their materials and still have a sticker from an old celeron build. I booted it up recently and it still works.

instagib··on Swapping SIM cards used to be easy, and then came eSIM
If you’re in the low percent running cabled headphones, you probably are also running a headphone amp if necessary or not which uses more cell phone power.

Now you need a usb->usb + 3.5mm to keep it charged up or an add on battery.

instagib··on Ask HN: What tech purchase did you regret even though reviews were great?
Google home, nest thermostat, Alexa, roomba, Apple Watch, iPad.

GHome consistently gets worse voice recognition or usability.

Nest has many notifications to enable eco modes making me uncomfortable in own home.

Alexa terrible voice recognition.

Roomba kept getting stuck, errors.

Apple Watch useless versus oura ring even if steps aren’t as accurate.

iPad usage not worth the cost. Either get a laptop full featured or a small tv and android shield box.

instagib··on Clair Obscur having its Indie Game Game Of The Year award stripped due to AI use
All press is good press.

Few care about the mainstream game review sites or oddball game award shows as their track record is terrible (Concord reviews).

Most go by player reviews, word of mouth, and social media.

instagib··on iOS 26.2 fixes 20 security vulnerabilities, 2 actively exploited
Please review the vulnerability list. https://support.apple.com/en-us/125885

“Access user data” “see apps user has installed” “gain root access”.

Maybe worth staying on to jailbreak or if you hate IOS Aero edition. Icons are blurry now. Slow usage. Going to beta 18.7.3 Then maybe android. Idk about these new UI changes that are forced with no absolute removal.

instagib··on Trials avoid high risk patients and underestimate drug harms
I can’t find the exact MDMA study for PTSD but after reading the study participants rejection criteria for it; it seemed like few could qualify.

I saw a new procedure available in Mexico for 8k for psychedelic treatment with Ibogaine. Still schedule 1 like MDMA in USA.

It looks like there has been a few MDMA trials for ptsd even though the FDA denied more widespread testing.

instagib··on Virgin and Qantas to ban use of portable power banks after string of fires
“Australian airlines will ban the use of portable power banks… and Emirates”
instagib··on NATO Ended Russia's Estonian Air Incursions
Nearly everyone does this testing each other, their equipment, responses, verify doctrines etc.

“Unknown aircraft, you were detected…” then radar lock warning if they’re lucky.

instagib··on The Luxury Electric Vehicle Is in Trouble
“Ford has stopped making the (f150 lightning) truck, whose price starts at $55,000 and can rise to more than $85,000 for premium versions with added features, and it won’t say when or whether production will restart.“
instagib··on Firefox expands fingerprint protections
One thing I found that broke tracking algorithms was the ‘every tab is a new random profile’ extension. I can’t remember the name as I haven’t used it in a while and it broke a lot of logins.

They could not build a profile on you and it would break their system of tracking user login per device.

instagib··on Study finds memory decline surge in young people
In my family, people 70+ stop using mobile phones or never used them in the first place.
instagib··on Simple trick to increase coverage: Lying to users about signal strength
I would rather see a live speed test number, emoji, or something. The signal frequency or strength doesn’t matter if the tower equipment is overloaded with users and running at dialup speeds.

I’ve been in bad tower areas where the solution is to drive to the next town or tower along the highway.

instagib··on The mad king's digital killswitch
You can install 3 non AppStore programs without Jailbreaking onto your iPhone. If you pay $100 per year you can install as many as you want without refreshing and get notifications.

For free: connect your phone to a computer once then follow instructions online then refresh it over WiFi once per week. It does it automatically. Hacked games, Spotify premium no ads, YouTube no ads, or whatever app you decide to make on your own.

instagib··on The myth of outrunning your diet
James Smith, a fitness influencer on YouTube, had a video showing what it took for him to burn 5,000 calories then eat 5,000 calories. He set it to private for some reason recently but I liked to reference it for how long and painful both steps were.

A few other people have done the same feat or tried to: 5,000 or 10,000 calories challenge.

I don’t have the time to outrun a large blizzard (1300 calories) as a 90min session usually burns 700-900 calories according to my watch. I don’t feel like doing two sessions per day which is what Jay Cutler said he would do when cutting for Mr. Olympia. I think if I did, I wouldn’t be able to maintain it.

instagib··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
I’ve noticed hybrids are filling up dealers lots as well. They can’t sell them or won’t take a big loss on them. “Too heavy, expensive, less cargo space, and not enough benefits.” per sales.

There aren’t many EV’s on the lots either as the configuration team doesn’t see a need to order them from manufacturers if people aren’t buying them.

instagib··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
I thought most devs didn’t want to develop on android because IOS devs made more income per user (0) and spent more on in app purchases. Android does well with ad supported apps. Paid apps have had issues with piracy also.

“In 2024, the App Store made $103.4 billion to Google Play’s $46.7 billion.”

instagib··on No I don't want to turn on Windows Backup with One Drive

Davinci Resolve seems to run faster on Linux.

instagib··on A built-in 'off switch' to stop persistent pain
It makes me think some of these special breathing exercises can reduce pain for a bit similar to meditation. Include exercise. Fasting as mentioned but it can aggravate other symptoms. Fear inducing scenarios usually reduce pain but it’s short lived. Searching for fear sounds like a terrible idea to calm chronic pain.

I keep coming back to cervical disc issues that don’t heal and continue to worsen. Exercise like jogging can worsen things. Lifting, pt stretching, walking, and no improvements.

I could take a pill but it wouldn’t let me know my limits and I would definitely overextend myself then probably make things worse at a faster pace.

[This research also suggests that behavioral interventions such as exercise, meditation, and cognitive behavioral therapy may influence how these brain circuits fire, just as hunger and fear did in the lab.

“We’ve shown that this circuit is flexible, it can be dialed up or down,” he says. “So, the future isn’t just about designing a pill. It’s also about asking how behavior, training, and lifestyle can change the way these neurons encode pain.”]

instagib··on Nearly half of drivers killed in (Ohio County) crashes had THC in their blood
Thirty years ago, at a fair demonstration, they tried to determine passerby’s who were high. They did a quick reaction test, looked at eyes, and a short intoxication test using a driving video with questions.

They could not determine if people were high or tired but both were ineligible to drive according to their tests. Never heard of any improvements or applications.

instagib··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
Unverified developers can still use adb to install whatever they choose per the link:

“How does developer verification impact my use of Android Studio?

We are working to ensure these changes don’t have an impact on your day-to-day workflow so you can continue building your apps as smoothly as possible. Participating in developer verification will not affect your experience in Android Studio, the official IDE for Android app development. You will continue to be able to build and run an app even if your identity is not verified. Android Studio is unaffected because deployments performed with adb, which Android Studio uses behind the scenes to push builds to devices, is unaffected. You can continue to develop, debug, and test your app locally by deploying to both emulators and physical devices, just as you do now.”

instagib··on Ford locking basic navigation behind a subscription
I see why Fords ceo does not like Apple CarPlay Ultra. You can control everything from your phone or a tablet.

“CarPlay Ultra is Apple's advanced, next-generation CarPlay system that deeply integrates your iPhone with a vehicle's entire infotainment system, including the driver's instrument cluster. It extends the familiar iOS interface to all the screens in your car, allowing for comprehensive control of vehicle functions like climate, radio, drive modes, and vehicle settings directly from the familiar CarPlay interface.”

instagib··on US government shuts down after Senate fails to pass last-ditch funding plan
Some federal contractor companies have a plan but not all do. They may allow workers leave without pay, forced them to take vacation/PTO, or critical workers are forced to come in and do 3 jobs at once but be paid while their friends/coworkers are not getting a paycheck.

“The people worst off are Federal contractors. They are effectively unemployed during these periods.”

I do not know if they are worst off as hopefully they have some emergency savings, credit card, or 401k loan they can take out.

Last 4 shutdowns: 21, 16, 2, and 34 days.

instagib··on Kagi News
On my llm, I have a prompt that condenses down to:

For every line of text output, give me a full MLA annotated source. If you cannot then say your source does not exist or you are generating information based on multiple sources then give me those sources. If you cannot do that, print that you need more information to respond properly.

Every new model I mess with needs a slightly different prompt due to safeguards or source protections. It is interesting when it lists a source that I physically own and their training data is deteriorated.

instagib··on F-Droid and Google’s developer registration decree
There are so many scams going around many nations they are resorting to whatever they can do to stem the flow of scams.

You can still install via cable or adb but less tricking peoples grandparents to download malware.

Now they need to trick developers to release malware or scam apps which is a little more difficult.

instagib··on Cache of devices capable of crashing cell network is found in NYC
Can also text 911 now which would overburden the texting protocol network so no one else’s texts will go through.

It’s a cell tower jammer and terrorism multiplier. Can’t call or text. It will probably disturb internet service as well. Include a few radio jammers for local police and a few satellite antennas you could create an opportunity then a panic to cover your tracks getting out.

instagib··on Designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization
Try traveling somewhere that has fair safety but low median wages. There are many in USA or many outside it.

Certain countries people will not talk bad about their leaders for fear for their lives. Others are happy to talk to you and are paid $1 per hour or $1 per day.

Maybe it can put some perspective on things.

instagib··on US-Run TikTok to License Algorithm, White House Says
Seems like they have been at an impasse for a while. The US wants to control social media algorithms.

“Chinese law says that algorithm must remain under Beijing control. But U.S. law requires TikTok to be cut off from any “operational relationship” with ByteDance, “including any cooperation with respect to the operation of a content recommendation algorithm.”

(…) That plan, like the one outlined Monday, would have seen all U.S.-origin user data from TikTok stored on domestic servers operated by Oracle. Then, too, Oracle and a third party would have reviewed TikTok’s source code to make sure it was not manipulated. Some of that plan was put in effect in recent years.”

instagib··on South Korea's President says US investment demands would spark financial crisis
$350 billion investment to avoid tariffs.

“Trump says the investments will be "selected" by him and controlled by the U.S., meaning Washington would have discretion over where the money will be invested.”
