inportb··on Show HN: Finetune LLaMA-7B on commodity GPUs using your own text
You could just use a much bigger model to perform arbitrary tasks without fine-tuning.
inportb··on Map of an Insect’s Brain
More like totally impractical for living specimens that you want to continue living meaningfully.
inportb··on Canadians think tipping is ‘getting out of control,’ new poll suggest
> If someone delivers a take-out order, why is that less worthy of tipping, than if you're in a restaurant?

It's not. If you were at the restaurant, you'd tip the server. If you were home, you'd tip the deliverer. If you picked it up yourself, why then you could tip yourself :)

> you're using to tipping at a restaurant and never questioned it

Now that's a bold assumption :) How about, tipping at a restaurant is part of the culture, and many people do so begrudgingly?

Dissecting this meme reveals that people are comfortable tipping for the act of waiting on them (the so-called service). The person who cooks and the person who bundles supposedly serve the institution, and so they should be paid by the institution.

Or so it would seem. The waiter and the driver also ultimately work for the institution, so one could argue that they, too, should be paid adequately by the institution. Tips should be reserved for exceptional service to you beyond what they're expected to perform for the institution.

So if the cashier at the takeout place made you happy and you wanted to tip him/her for that... you could knock yourself out. It's worthy of tipping because you felt like it.

> 10% is borderline "something happened where I need to talk to a manager" territory

I believe that's the problem being discussed :)

inportb··on PFAS ban affects most refrigerant blends
> R152a also falls outside the PFAS definition.

Oh, so it might be possible to use the contents of "canned air" gas dusters as refrigerant.

inportb··on Don't believe ChatGPT – we do not offer a "phone lookup" service
Great idea! Governments should start writing laws using LLMs.
inportb··on Learnings from employing ChatGPT as a ML Engineer for a day
Neat. I'm interested in doing something similar, but involving PHI, so ChatGPT is out of the question. How would one self-host a LLM without a Web Scale™ GPU farm? Is FlexGen (recently featured on HN) the way?
inportb··on Show HN: AskHN
I believe it's always going to be an average. The more interesting question is how is the average weighted?
inportb··on Local-First Web Development
It works so damn well until it finds itself in a Firefox private window :)

PouchDB does have rather expensive adapters that use memory or LocalStorage. Almost twice the size as the base package (minified).

inportb··on Creator of Linux virtual assistant blames 'patent troll' for project's death
Either devices are listening more than disclosed, or you're listening more than usual. Perhaps, after talking about things with your friend, you become more perceptive to similar things that occur in close temporal proximity.
inportb··on Iranian women compete at chess tournament without hijab: media reports
Well of course it's free will to avoid detention by morality police.
inportb··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
She's got a point: the game provides no clear purpose. Instead, you bring the purpose, and the game gives you a way to achieve it.

We engage in many other "pointless" pursuits: beauty, love, culture, civilization, and indeed, life itself. Everyone "plays" for a different reason, and that makes us human.

inportb··on Garage: An open-source distributed object storage service
JuiceFS looks like something that could be used with Garage.
inportb··on Garage: An open-source distributed object storage service
It seems that Garage is designed to be fast when inter-node latency is high. A geodistributed "cluster," for example, would profit from using Garage instead of Minio.
inportb··on Pristine meteorite found within hours of hitting Earth
That's an interesting question and I don't know the answer! But I'd expect any amino acids produced this way to diffuse and mix with the biologic amino acids from the surface. They'd be diluted by the overwhelming amount of biological "stuff." Stereoisomers should behave the same under the influence of gravity.
inportb··on Pristine meteorite found within hours of hitting Earth
It hints at the answer. Most amino acids on Earth occur in the L configuration because they are mostly synthesized through biologic activity. This is not to say there are no D amino acids in living organisms -- they're just uncommon. And abiotic processes tend to produce racemic mixtures, but these products are in the minority. Basically, amino acids found on Earth, even in the atmosphere, strongly favor the L configuration. Analyzing the fraction of L and D amino acids within the meteorite would yield clues as to their origin.
inportb··on Lab-grown blood given to people in world-first clinical trial
This appears to be a transfusion of mature blood cells derived from donor CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells, and it sounds like they're able to collect usable numbers of stem cells from a regular unit of whole blood... but how?

People normally don't have a whole lot of stem cells in the peripheral circulation (if they did, they'd have leukemia). For the purpose of stem cell transplantation, the donor is given medications to mobilize stem cells from the bone marrow before collection. I'm sure they're present in very small numbers in the blood, and perhaps they could be cultured in the lab, but even stem cells become exhausted eventually. This is the innovation, probably.

inportb··on A dad took photos of his toddler for a doctor – Google flagged him as a criminal
I'd be interested in automated backups/sync as well. Sounds like something like https://github.com/rtomac/cloud-services-backup-cli would do the trick...
inportb··on JiraCLI
I'm not sure if this does what you think it does.
inportb··on Asus Zenfone 9
Okay, but the "physical" outer dimensions must be bigger than the screen size.

If 5.9" were ridiculously large (it is), then so is anything bigger, including the phone that must contain the 5.9" screen.

inportb··on France bans veggie ′steaks,′ ′sausages′ to describe vegetarian products
The reality is that plants don't exist out of thin air either. There's a cute observation that everything that a plant could want (water, carbon, nitrogen, etc) all come from the air. But a closer examination reveals that it's a cycle. Animals, fungi, and bacteria are part of that cycle. Minerals from the ground are required also. Everyone is a middleman. Who would you cut out?

No harsh chemicals! Just purified water, borate buffer, silver sulfate, sodium nitrate... Wait, what? Are we sure this is homeopathic?

inportb··on Ask HN: If Kubernetes is the solution, why are there so many DevOps jobs?
Even though Kubernetes could reduce the workload and might require less manpower in some cases, it's still a beast that requires management. So DevOps has shifted from managing traditional infrastructure to managing Kubernetes configurations.
inportb··on Zitadel: The best of Auth0 and Keycloak combined
This is interesting, but... how does one deploy this in a container without k8s (using Docker)?

Keycloak is big and complicated, but at least it's easy to hide all the complexity behind Docker. Other than configuring the database, one could treat it as an opaque blob.

Authentik is big and complicated and modular, so the complexity is apparent in the `docker-compose.yml`.

inportb··on Ask HN: Buying a domain previously owned by a now deceased person
That's a good idea. Or, since it's already archived, redirect to the archived copy.
inportb··on Intuit asked Mailchimp employees to pay medical costs out of pocket
> I would like to get the same tax break myself, or at least eliminate the tax break altogether so I am on an even playing field with businesses. This would allow me to purchase my own health insurance at rates comparable to what I'm offered at work.

Maybe not. Businesses have more negotiating power because they're bigger buyers, so they would still have access to more competitive rates. Unless you got together with a lot of people to negotiate together (and this might be a startup opportunity).

inportb··on Mutagen – Cloud-based development using your local tools
Looks like it handles two-way sync very well, but could it keep more than two participants in sync? I'm sort of "abusing" Syncthing to sync Docker volumes (mostly just configuration and helper scripts) across several hosts. It works well, and the only things I'm missing are file ownership preservation and low-latency "instant"-feeling sync. csync2 gets it right, but it's fragile and needs a lot of babysitting. I'm wondering if Mutagen might be a suitable alternative.

What do you do if your VPN goes down and you need access to your server to debug it? Is physical access required or do you have other contingency plans?
