inostia··on Two Ex-Googlers Want to Make Bodegas and Mom-And-Pop Corner Stores Obsolete
This is such a stupid idea. These "pantry boxes" aren't going to replace bodegas. Who's going to restock them? And how soon? They literally just do not have the physical capacity to scale. Also: no beer, no tobacco products, no coffee, no ice cream, no hot food - basically the things that people go to bodegas for (but they have Lacroix!)... Not to mention some of the clerks are pretty friendly, at least in my area.

inostia··on John Scalzi: Being Poor (2005)
I applaud you for your success. I can relate, having found success in a career for which I am self-trained.

However, I don't use my personal anecdote to generalize that others should have the same abilities to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" and just _not be poor_. Knowledge isn't enough, economical and educational opportunities are not distributed equally. This is an issue of conditions that precedes an individual's life.

inostia··on John Scalzi: Being Poor (2005)
Thanks for posting.

"Being poor is knowing how hard it is to stop being poor." hit me hard. I didn't grow up poor, but I can understand this sentiment. It's unfortunate that so many people don't take the time to think about societal conditions before placing "blame" on the disadvantaged.

inostia··on Ask HN: Where does one find true entry level development jobs?
Second this. Universities are a great place to find junior dev work as competition is relatively low compared with higher paying industries.

I started off at an extremely low salary in my first job at a UC and doubled my salary in two years (though I still work in higher-ed and like it).

inostia··on Berkeley’s Attack on Housing
Why not relaxing rules for property owners to build units in their own backyards? See https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/16/us/california-today-housi...

Thanks for this. Also relevant, recent article about this issue in Oakland: http://www.oaklandmagazine.com/May-2017/The-Real-Cause-of-Ge...
inostia··on Berkeley’s Attack on Housing
Another example of how "progressives" in Berkeley are all for progressive policies (and driving a Prius) until they conflict with their NIMBY attitude towards their home values. Holdovers from the 60's and 70's who have seen their home values skyrocket and now want to prevent building of newer rental units (the "Missing Middle", 3-8 unit, smaller apartment buildings).
inostia··on Facebook is an attack on the open web
I miss the old message board days where everything was really DIY and local, just a table with location and bands. People would post to some homegrown site maintained by a devoted local fan. Also miss the days of fliers!

Now I have to scroll through ads and a bunch of irrelevant "local events for you" just to find what I'm looking for.

inostia··on Facebook is an attack on the open web
I'm a part of the local Bay Area music scene and Facebook events has basically become the standard for posting about shows. Without a Facebook I just don't hear about them.

I'm considering making a dummy account with a few friends just for the purpose of finding out about events.

Side note, does anyone know of a service that allows you to track FB events without having to be in the Facebook app? Not sure if there's an API for that.

inostia··on Facebook is an attack on the open web
I really, really hate the "log in to Facebook" popover.

I haven't had a Facebook account for over a year and I'm incredibly happy about it. The only downside is now I don't hear about local events.

So happy to see him mentioned here.

I haven't read his non-fiction, but his fiction is incredible.

inostia··on Ask HN: Will front end development ever move away from JavaScript?
The same could be said for HTML.
inostia··on Ask HN: Will front end development ever move away from JavaScript?
> "the number of CSS inline style, document.createElement('style')"

Can you expand? Which libraries, I know BEM hopes to isolate CSS styles to "components" by using strict CSS rules, but are you speaking of inline styles as they relate to JavaScript libraries like React?

inostia··on Ask HN: Will front end development ever move away from JavaScript?
I think the better question is, "Will front end development ever move away from CSS?"

In all honesty though, with ES6/7 writing programs in Javascript is a joy. CSS still sucks...

inostia··on Ask HN: If the bots take your job, what would you do?
I'm legitimately scared by this question. What bot knows how to take a design and implement it in software?

inostia··on What.CD is shutting down
I just commented this below. Soulseek is amazing! Returned to it after years recently - I remembered the Mac version sucked. Now it's great.

Haven't been let down yet and I listen to a lot of rare experimental stuff.

inostia··on What.CD is shutting down
I have never heard of this. Does anyone else still use Soulseek? I recently started using it again after years and there's tons of obscure experimental artists. Still going strong.
inostia··on Snowden: Stop Relying on Facebook for Your News
Simple answer: don't use social media.

I don't understand why this is controversial. If you don't approve of the way they do business, don't use their products. I use no social media accounts and my life is plenty-full of engaging, useful discussion.

inostia··on AdultFriendFinder was hacked
No. This is a stance of totalitarian regimes. I doubt the people that joined this site should be shamed for their choices.
inostia··on AdultFriendFinder was hacked
17 fuckyou 34,498. What a strange password choice.

The interesting thing to me is that password choices clearly reflect the demographic of the users.

inostia··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
Because it would enact legislation that would require ID before wire transfer? I'm not sure if this is currently done, but it may upend laws (in CA) re: getting a driver's license if you are an illegal citizen. I can't imagine that it would be required to submit a birth certificate or social security card for wire transfer.
inostia··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
That's fair. But it does seem like there's some suppression here. I always thought the "mainstream media bias" thing was just a soundbite for conservatives. But tarrifs for companies wanting to move factories overseas? Term limits for Congress people? Those are legitimate proposals that I never heard about (except in the debates).

I don't have time to look for documents on candidates websites. I rely on (and pay) the media to present information because I'm busy. This should have been reported fairly, though maybe that bias is actually true.

inostia··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
I did look at both candidate's websites. Though a link to this .pdf was not easy to find. This is exactly the sort of thing that I expect the media to link me to, rather than an (after-the-fact) HN post.

I read news websites every single day and never saw anything close to the clarity of his positions presented here.

inostia··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
How did I not see this before the election (even if it came out 102316 as evidenced in the file name)? Why did NYT/Guardian/all of the news sites that I regularly visit not report this?

This is a clear policy proposal, contrary to everything I had read that said he had no clear plan.

inostia··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
I am very surprised that I am just reading this now. I wonder, if I had read it before (and I read NYT obsessively), that I would have re-considered by opinion.
