ino··on Making daylight saving time permanent could reduce crime
Which is which? I'd rather have it like when it's summer in the northern hemisphere the whole year.
ino··on The Nightmare of Replacing a Battery on a Mac Laptop
FWIW, the battery on the Air also isn't glued, changing it is also a 15 min job, and it's also available for cheap online. But you do need the special screwdrivers for the bottom panel.

ino··on How Videogames Are Saving the Symphony Orchestra
I love Lufia 2. But after the first tune that sounds like a little classical piece, I can tell the music was made for a video game. I prefer to the whole game experience, with the music alone makes it feel something is missing. That being said, I have no problem with people listening to whatever makes them happy, in whatever setting. Also like in everything, there are tons of generic shit music in games.
ino··on Global coalition tells Facebook to kill its Real Names policy
Just the fact that facebook asks an official ID is maddening. They aren't a governmental agency. In Portugal the official ID card has your SS number, fiscal number, and health number. I don't want facebook to know any of those, seriously.
ino··on A new approach to web performance
-webkit-overflow-scrolling makes scrolling feel like native, important for web apps and web views. It's like when you make an overflow: scroll div, and you make your main content inside this it.

It also ads the permanent url bar at the top and the navigational arrows at the bottom. This is useful for some web apps, because if those weren't permanent, you couldn't have buttons fixed on the bottom. This is because when you would click them, the back/forward arrows bar would appear pushing your button up so you have to click it again.

I used to use it but I've stopped because it's a whole level of complexity on your complex app.

I wish iOS safari scrolling would feel like native. Many people are using this property for this reason only, sacrificing screen space (the always-on browser interface). It used to be worse with the small screen of the iPhone 4.

ino··on Volkswagen's U.S. head: individuals engineered emissions cheating
Internet sarcastic comments are much better when people don't add /s at the end.
ino··on Microsoft’s Very Good Day
They are marketing really hard where the tech nerds and devs are, astroturfing comment sections and sponsored articles everywhere.

Things like Microsoft is changing and giving fuzzy feelings (really?), but the general audience is harder to get. I've seen huge billboards with surface 3 ads, special sections in stores, but I've never seen one in the wild.

ino··on 90% of People Don't Know How to Use Ctrl+F (2011)
You won't believe the time you save by just binding 'esc' to a mouse button. 'enter' also, but to a lesser extent. Every time you're mousing and a dialog appears, you have escape and cancel. It's also very useful in photoshop and games.

I learned it from working on AutoCAD with a puck on a tablet. One of the buttons was binded to 'esc', and the right button acts as an enter. Later when I switched to mouse, the 'esc' mouse button was the thing I missed the most.

I've also made some statistics: http://inodetelic.com/autocad-command-statistics/

Puck UIs (https://www.dropbox.com/s/7v099r086r0cyu1/some_tablet.jpeg?d...) were good at the time for drawing programs because screen space was precious.

ino··on PICO-8
You're right, it looks like much thought went into it. I se 4 distinct human skin tones, or 3 if you include a darker tone for shading, pleasant colors with darker tones for shading and good availability of high contrast (not everything is pastel).
ino··on Prebake: Block EU Cookie Notices with Adblock
What are the best server side only alternatives to google analytics?
ino··on DEC64: Decimal Floating Point
I like this idea for in the sense it makes life easier, like garbage collection for example.

It's good to understand what's going on behind the scenes, how memory is allocated and managed, and the floating point quirks and their binary nature, but for many general applications It'd be nice to have peace of mind that (0.1 + 0.2 == 0.3) returns true.

The designer is Douglas Crockford, I doubt he doesn't understand NaN.
ino··on Just doesn’t feel good
That's why (for now and in this case) apps win. You get to make money from ads, and some people pay you a dollar to remove those ads.
ino··on Show HN: WebGL Games
Sweet, submitted my game, Pizza Snake.

You may want to change the locale of the like/share FB buttons to english and update the copyright date at the bottom.

ino··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
From what I remember when I had a wacom tablet in the 90s and 2000s, the tech was something like RFID where the active tablet would read the passive puck and stylus and get sub millimeter accuracy from triangulation. This included tilt and angle of the stylus.

The stylus pressure and buttons was a sensor on the stylus that was sensed by the tablet.

The screen or surface didn't have any sensors.

ino··on All Websites Look the Same
A few days ago I wanted to check pricing/features of linode, so I googled linode and clicked on the first link:

http://welcome.linode.com/features/

This gave me 0% of what I wanted and no way to get there, I was confused before I realized it was just a glorified shitty landing page.

Fuck them for trying to scam me into creating an account and making me waste my time, I thought.

ino··on GM crops created superweed, say scientists (2005)
> why not produce plants with, e.g., much bigger seed heads?

How about "Why not produce plants that don't taste like shit?"

The worst thing about living in Berlin (coming from Portugal) is that I can't find tomatoes and other vegetables that have a good taste (or smell).

Why not use GM to make a tomato with a great taste that you can smell from a distance?

ino··on Windows 10 Review
Win 7 was excellent. It was the OS with the best defaults and features out of the box (even now, but specially for the time). Very little fiddling around was needed.

Win 8 made me switch to OSX. No regrets, but I miss Win 7 sometimes.

ino··on Windows 10 Review
IIRC, some settings were only accessible through the metro settings and not the normal control panel. (user config maybe?)

ino··on M, a personal digital assistant inside Facebook Messenger
lame. All serious, no fun allowed.
ino··on WebExtensions FAQ
That has always worked for me on Chrome. On the other hand, chrome lets me use the websites own search without setting up anything. For example:

you [tab] searches on youtube. news [tab] searches hn. I've never set it up and works with almost every site I've performed a search on.

ino··on Learn the Command Line
This is not about security but since you're from codecademy, I'm having trouble with the font on the console, on chrome on OSX.

I'm having trouble with - and = which look almost the same to my not so great vision.

By the way, thanks to the codecademy team. Cool stuff.

ino··on Terminal Window Manager for OS X
Yup, another thing it does for me is enable back/forward buttons on my mouse.
ino··on It Just Works
> My Macbook Air. It's better, but the power button no longer does anything when I press it.

Press and hold. It's this way to prevent accidental logouts which were frequent in my case when it was just a press.

ino··on I noticed some disturbing privacy defaults in Windows 10
Apple must have known this a few months back and the result was their privacy centric marketing campaign.
ino··on The Agency
Israel does it, but maybe on a lesser scale.
ino··on Roboto: Google’s signature font is now open source
That's the old Roboto, right?

So they'll just update it at some point and everyone who uses the old will automatically be using the new one?

ino··on FIFA Officials Arrested on Corruption Charges; Face Extradition to U.S
> hundreds of migrant workers dying and injured because of the insane conditions they're working under to prepare the stadiums

Thousands even, and the sad thing is the number of slavery condition migrant workers have been very high in Qatar and the Emirates since the start of this golden age.

Let's hope some things improve for those who suffer the most. And fuck FIFA.
