ino··on Apple fans are coming to hate Apple software
Mailto links open chrome with a gmail tab for me.
ino··on Will Bond (Package Control) Joins Sublime HQ
Exactly, in so many simple situations I press a key and there's a > 200ms delay. It gets tiring very fast and I want instant responsiveness on most actions. Sublime delivers.

Example: selecting and writing with multiple cursors.

FWIW for Berlin, Apple Maps draws the transport lines and stations far better and nicer. Google draws the lines very imprecisely and doesn't show you tram lines, for example.
ino··on Apple fans are coming to hate Apple software
Google maps was always very buggy for me on Android, but fine on iOS.

Hangouts is bad. Very slow and bloated everywhere. On mobile it only syncs notifications at random. Audio and video quality is total crap, and even with this new web beta thing where it's supposed to be better, it's still much worse than skype.

The most incredible thing, and I am ashamed of typing this but whatever, is that I've actually felt an improvement in my life after turning off hangouts in gmail. WTF.

ino··on More Details on the Insidious iOS Snap-To-Road “Feature”
I've noticed this yesterday in a flight just before landing and I found it funny how the airplane was following the roads each for a few seconds before snapping of.

I also confirm it snaps on both google maps and apple maps with airplane mode turned on, most probably due to caching.

I've also found it amazing that the iPhone 6S held the cache of a map 3000km away after 3 days abroad, with intermittent wifi and lots of google maps and safari use.

ino··on How to make the Atom editor transparent
Looking at the screenshot, the background isn't blurred so it's not translucent.

It has transparency, or it is semi-transparent. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transparency_and_translucency

(you are right about win7 having translucid windows)

ino··on Why London Underground stopped people walking up the escalators
I've seen escalators that at night stop (like go to sleep) if nobody is walking and start (wake up) when someone walks towards them.
ino··on Atom text editor 1.4 released
On a 500 line file when I start adding multiple cursors, after the 5th or so It starts taking multiple seconds just to select the next. This was in December, so a recent version. I can't work like this.
ino··on Atom text editor 1.4 released
It runs badly on my 8gb 2013 MacBook Air, on a medium sized php+javascript project.

I've been trying Atom every 3 months since it came out. Just a few plugins and Linting and is still very slow and I hate lag while typing.

I don't have this problem with Sublime, for example, where typing is instant. Even eclipse and Android studio are more responsive when typing.

ino··on Facebook is misleading Indians with its full-page ads about Free Basics
If you write apps for their ecosystem, you've been fucked real, but real hard at least 6 times in the last 6 years. From unkept promises to everchanging rules, terms and api.
ino··on Material Design: Why the Floating Action Button Is Bad UX Design
I also dislike the FAB. I already wrote about it in a previous comment, here's my major problem:

It is still the last place I look on the screen to perform an action. I look at the top first, then I check the hamburger menu and only then I realize it was BENEATH MY THUMB all along. I hold the phone with my right hand and my thumb naturally covers the FAB area.

ino··on Hi, I’m from the games industry. Governments, please stop us
Regarding "think of the children", there's a reason casinos have minimum age requirements. Gambling is an addiction and many of these games exploit the same principle that makes us addicted. At an early age it can mess you up for good.
ino··on Focus by Firefox, a Content Blocker for iOS
So that's why Twitter web views have ads even with content blockers enabled?

What's holding Twitter back? They've had updates recently.

ino··on Paris: You Don’t Want to Read This
How is it racist to call out the inhumane things ISIS is doing?

ino··on Ne: the nice editor
Was it the same as the F4 (edit) in norton commander?
ino··on How Apple Is Giving Design a Bad Name
The positioning of the FAB or "Floating Action Button" on top of the content, makes sense when you think about it but in practice I find it frustrating:

- Because the way I hold the phone, most of the time my thumb is covering it and I don't see it.

- Because it is supposed to be the "main" action, it makes all other actions move around. Example: on Google Photos, the FAB is search. on Gmail the FAB is "create" and search is at the top.

- It is still the last place I look on the screen to perform an action. I look at the top first, then I look in the hamburger menu and only then I realize it was beneath my thumb. Fuck

I'm not convinced. I don't think google is convinced either because they keep shuffling it around from update to update, from app to app like they don't know what to do with it.

ino··on Freeciv founded 20 years ago today
I played the hell out of freeciv between 2003 and 2005 and even at the time there were different tilesets or skins to choose from.

Don't fear, we'll get through it. But There is real slavery going on in the emirates and qatar right now if you want to get mad.
ino··on Web Assembly
Big regression in accessibility, copy/paste, automatic translation, everything that makes the web uniquely great.
ino··on The New Intolerance of Student Activism
Every time I see a comment starting with "Thank you." here, and specially on Reddit, I read it as "I now feel better because what you wrote aligns with my views, and that somehow makes them valid".

It doesn't make them valid.

I've also read the article and it's more than about just the email or the racism: it's also about how giving up to bullies and censorship leads to abuse and injustice.

ino··on Star Citizen has raised $94M – where is it?
I remember following the game with optimism until FPS combat was announced.

I expressed my fears of feature creep an a massive increase in development time on forums and was dismissed by fans as "it's just a small detail" and "the underlying engine supports it".

It's naive to think adding seamless fps to a game of this scale wouldn't massively increase complexity. And if it's just a small detail perhaps it isn't worth it.

As for the backers I see lots of Post-purchase rationalization: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-purchase_rationalizatio...

ino··on Details of UK website visits 'to be stored for year'
If they want to frame you they don't need hidden iframes and stuff. They can just manufacture it. Because it's all secret/confidential, someone who has a friend or pays someone inside can incriminate someone and make his life a hell.

We were warned of PIDE in school for a good reason (PIDE was the Portuguese Stasi). People will abuse it.
