innagadadavida··on Ask HN: Are there any modern AI-assisted Interior Design / Layout remodel apps?
I’m doing something similar. The best non AI solution I found was to use upwork to generate this. It’s fairly cheap and fast and you can avoid talking to an architect while you iterate on your ideas. The output was in Sketchup 3d. Apparently this program has a python it ruby api and you can programmatically generate things.
innagadadavida··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
I meant the authors that are suing - if you have the money to sue, you can be considered rich? no?
innagadadavida··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
Copyright laws should be amended to allow this scenario. If I read a book and write about it in a blog, it is considered review. Why shouldn’t we allow companies to do the same to train their models? Overall it will benefit society more than it hurts some rich authors.
innagadadavida··on Bard’s latest update: more features, languages and countries
Can anyone actually read that article on their mobile device that is not huge like a tablet? Fonts are super thin and unreadable for me.
innagadadavida··on Chinese intelligence hacked U.S. government emails in ‘significant’ breach
Looks like a serious problem with Microsoft products and they are shifting the blame as a China problem. Microsoft should put out better software.
innagadadavida··on Meta developer tools: Working at scale
Shipping faster should not be the only metric, the amount of SEVs should be given much higher weight. The attitude of most engineers is to show impact and if there is a SEV, it is better as it will show even more impact. This slows other people down and causes a gradual decline is actually shipping things that matter - quality over quantity.
innagadadavida··on The world’s largest democracy is collapsing before our eyes
We all agree that these institutions are required and there has to be balance of power. What Modi has convinced majority of people is that a.) these institutions are not incorruptible b.) these are being funded and controlled by foreign entities. c.) The controlling entities have no skin in the Indian democracy or people. The opposition is losing power because they are not able to convince these people otherwise. Democracy is just the outcome of elections and voting. Just equating everyone with Hitler is shallow and won't win any arguments - it is also very demeaning to all the people who actually suffered.
innagadadavida··on The world’s largest democracy is collapsing before our eyes
Modi has diluted certain carve-outs and rights of minorities. However, he has done this in a democratic manner - the majority of Indians want these policies, that's the reason they keep re-electing him. Author of the article needs to go back to school - first it quotes that "Modi is using his electoral dominance for X, Y, Z". Then goes on to claim that this is undemocratic. Doing what you were elected by the masses to do - multiple times is the definition of democracy.
innagadadavida··on Generative AI Could Add $4.4T a Year to the Global Economy, McKinsey Finds
Fundamentally I don’t understand how a new technology can claim to make everything more efficient but at the same time grow the economy. Shouldn’t we have loss of jobs and reduction in consumption and GDP if we become way more efficient?
innagadadavida··on Get It Done
I think this applies to his boss more than anyone else. Zuck just did not get it done. He picked a fight with apple, spent billions acquiring occulus and none of this actually got Meta to be anywhere close to where apple is today in that space and how meta is losing ad revenue because Zuck failed to bend the knee. I just can’t believe that billionaires egos are so fragile and it has to come in the way of building profitable and successful companies.
innagadadavida··on The UI of Hacker News Is Perfect
Please support reader mode on iOS. Or at least fix the small fonts.
innagadadavida··on Examples using Photoshop’s new “Generative Fill” feature
From an economic standpoint, this makes sense. If an artist is bringing in 4k a month, then spending 40 a month for software maintenance and updates is rounding error. This also opens up the third part market to sell plugins if open source doesn’t work for them. All in all this is win win for everyone and more options equates to more freedom.
innagadadavida··on California’s current water rights and investment
How about taxing them? Is that allowed by the constitution?
innagadadavida··on MTIA v1: Meta’s first-generation AI inference accelerator
Is there something that compares these to more consumer offering like Apple’s ANE?
innagadadavida··on China’s loans pushing world’s poorest countries to brink of collapse
It seems worse that that - they take video trim if the countries infra like ports to have a military build up.
innagadadavida··on India's Alphonso mangoes are virtually impossible to find in America (2018)
Where I grew up, Raspuri and Malgova is something we used to have every summer. They are impossible to find in many parts of India as well and they have an awesome flavor.

Thanks and goodbye HN
innagadadavida··on Apple Is Breaking Its Own Rules with a New Headset
I’m trying to imagine where it will be used most not just how home or office or public places? Still feels socially awkward but so did AirPods for me.
innagadadavida··on Apple Is Breaking Its Own Rules with a New Headset
MBP is usable after Ive’s exit. He’s surely Is talented but his success rate is not 100%. Apples main problem right now is software quality - this has become difficult as there is integration between every device with every other apple device and the combinatorial complexity is difficult to maintain and test.
innagadadavida··on Releasing 3B and 7B RedPajama
Founder ex-apple Siri search. Had a baby a couple of years ago. Not too surprising to me :)
innagadadavida··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
There are multiple dimensions here - fame and fortune at the very least and whether it is localized or global in scope.

It is still winner takes all, but if you look at the overall landscape, there are plenty of opportunities where you can have an outsized impact - you can have localized fame and fortune (anyone with AI expertise under their belt have no problems with fortune!)

innagadadavida··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
This is a little harsh. Hinton trudged along with neural networks through the coldest AI winter and helped create the conditions for OpenAI to have all the raw ingredients needed to cook up something powerful.
innagadadavida··on Meta is about to start its next round of layoffs
Also at Meta. The software stack is a shit show - xplat debugging in Vscode can’t even print the variables properly. This hacker culture is good at shipping shitty stuff and getting your bonus/promo and moving on.
innagadadavida··on Your iPhone Was Built with Child Labor
In some of these countries, going to school might give you a less prosperous life. How should the typical westerner deal with these facts?
innagadadavida··on Apple Ventura Breaks Settings .SLOW Clap to Death
I’m facing this issue of it nagging to accept iCloud terms. Since this is in my work laptop, I don’t want to sign in to my account. This has gone downhill pretty quickly.
innagadadavida··on GOTOphobia considered harmful in C
Clang works too. Not sure about the rest.
innagadadavida··on GOTOphobia considered harmful in C
Plain C version with attribute((__cleanup)):

    int* foo(int bar) {
        int* return_value = NULL;

        __cleanup__((cleanup_1)) int c1 = 0;
        if (!do_something(bar))
            return NULL;
        __cleanup__((cleanup_2)) int c2 = 0;
        if (!init_stuff(bar))
            return NULL;
        __cleanup__((cleanup_3)) int c3 = 0;
        if (!prepare_stuff(bar))
            return NULL;
        return_value = do_the_thing(bar);

        return return_value;
    }
innagadadavida··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
What about using high powered lasers? There weee a lot of research into this by the military.
innagadadavida··on U.S. military shoots down suspected Chinese surveillance balloon
While these are all great points, I guess this has changed people’s perception of risks and we are now more open to spending billions of USD to close these perceived and real gaps.

It won’t be surprising if there is a huge defense spending bill in congress with carve out for war in Ukraine and this time it will go through as the Republicans won’t hold back.

innagadadavida··on John Carmack’s ‘Different Path’ to Artificial General Intelligence
> On average technology has been overwhelmingly good.

In order to achieve this, we are destroying the environment, other species and their habitats.

> but what is the alternative to blind progress being proposed

You don’t need and ethicist for this - but an accountant. We need to get stricter about negative externalities. For example, every inventor/manufacturer should be forced to take back their product after end of life. This will slow progress but if done right, it will avoid destruction brought by technology or at least not palm it off on to poorer society or environment.
