ingvay7··on Please stop the AI confidence theater
> Marketing, Finance, and HR

Having this hype ingested fully by finance is lethal. Ive witnessed CFOs fully believing a lot of the hype and that directly leads to massive chopping of random teams on a spreadsheet with 'use ai' directives.

ingvay7··on Turning music into a chore is how I became a musician (2022)
I usually ensure i have a vision of how it needs to sound. I know im going for lower reverb, more compression, more guitar prescence etc and have years of crappy mixes to my credit so pretty clear of what i dont want. Where it helps a lot is analying the first pass mix I make myself and then letting it know specific instructions like lower the gain but not below 3db , tell me any other changes to ensure i keep the compression intact. THen automate stuff like always creating a separate guitar bus with 2-4Khz boost and blend with main guitar track. Analyze the spectrum analyzer to analyze the sine waves and smooth the high ends. Also ask it to bounce separate mixes with headroom so i can pick one Im also building some tools on the side to let me create plugin tones based on reference tracks/axemen which I add to the mix ( had posted the link on here a while back). Working this way has helped me learn Logic with step function improvement since i dont let it take control but ask it to give me instructions ( like a senior engineer would).Just asking it to take control and mix without a vision usually ends up sounding pretty generic. Still a work in progress though. Hope that added some clarity.
ingvay7··on Turning music into a chore is how I became a musician (2022)
A lot of my hobbyist musician friends were way more prolific during covid. The extra time seemed to have unlocked their ability to be way more creative to de-stress. I myself had a burst of activity recording music and improving my guitar technique for a couple of years.Sadly it dipped again post covid. However, more recently I'm trying to find a middle ground with AI cutting corners with the boring repeatable stuff of audio engineering and shifting focus to the creative and the technique. Feels like things have turned the corner here and I can get a pretty professional mix out quick without sacrificing my creativity. I love that middle ground where AI is truly helping me accelerate my output as a hired gun that mixes my sound while the calluses and note selections/ arrangement are all mine.
ingvay7··on A peek into Reddit's anti-spam internals
Neat rabbit hole. Reminds me of having to deal with email spam - it was a similar deal with rule-based filters, ML scores, domain bans,IP filtering, browse fingerprinting etc and mishmash of ever evolving scripts surviving org and personnel changes. Glad i dont deal with it anymore as the frontier seems to be 2 fronts now with human and agentic spam.
ingvay7··on Software Is Becoming Marketing
The billions companies spend on awareness, converson, retention etc will only grow and non vibe-coded software will continue to be the input (doesnt "become" marketing) into a very sophisticated go-to-market machine occupied by various players ( brands, publishers, agencies etc). Still this is directionally interesting if only aimed at SMBs SaaS.
ingvay7··on Thomann takes legal action against Fender
A lot of it is also the history associated with all the strat cats from the 1950s onwards and really good marketing by fender, you're buying a real strat because you want to be in that company (Buddy Holly to Gilmour etc). I recall only wanting a strat when i was in my wannabe-yngwie phase. nothing else would fit.
ingvay7··on Fired by Google for creating the Google workspace CLI
Particularly for a company that possibly has to navigate high-volume, often frivolous litigation and brand attacks from trolls. I have been in similar situations having to partner with legal defending the most frivolous things on products released. You literally sign docs to not do such things when u onboard. Not sure what the point of broadcasting this is though.
ingvay7··on I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle
My brain immediately switched to 'you could be mine' by guns n roses
ingvay7··on Compositions from Beethoven's Bonn Period
"Considering all his works in his Bonn period from age 12 to 22, we must conclude, that we have an extremely meagre list of compositions, compared to Mozart or other productive composers."
ingvay7··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
I used to think AI summaries in emails were sorta useful until I was dealing with a particularly long engagement with a law firm where their paralegal sends out AI-generated recaps. After a couple of months, I was at my wits end at the paralegal sending me these summaries. They absolutely trashed most conversation threads with barren slop and mixed up convo threads. I think it may have been Copilot they were using.
ingvay7··on I've always wondered if anyone used sharing buttons on news sites and blogs
Im always surprised when i see the significant opens in the promotions tab of the gmail inbox. Looks like a lot of folks want those ads.
ingvay7··on 'Wow, it really worked ': 70s TV show causing worldwide panic today
It’s like the conspiracy theorist version of one of the Three-Body problem storylines with those scientists vanishing. I expect theres an entire subreddit for this.
ingvay7··on I indexed 669 GB of my GoPro videos using my M1 Max computer and local ML models
cannot wait to incorporate this to my workflow. thanks
ingvay7··on I indexed 669 GB of my GoPro videos using my M1 Max computer and local ML models
Really cool work and workflow. strongly prefer this kind of local, open pipeline that i control over a dependency on Adobe tools and lock ins.
ingvay7··on Show HN: I am building a map of people who lived in the Roman Empire
Love this. For people who aren’t familiar with Roman history, it would be great to have a short guided tour of how to explore the map. I filtered for 'pompeii' and it gave me 117 dots.
ingvay7··on Ear Training Practice
I've never been able to identify keys except for the higher E. Just that seemingly one low bar skill has helped me tune up my guitar to normal over the years instead of searching for a tuner. It's incredible how some folks do this effectively across all keys, modes etc
ingvay7··on Reading for pleasure is sharply down among schoolkids, report shows
One thing that helped in our house was making books unavoidable. We keep paperbacks lying around in every room. It sounds silly, but there’s a kind of “cover gravity” and guilt that pulls the kids ( and me) back into a book when a book is just sitting there gathering dust.
ingvay7··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
No real reason really. In fact its on my list next. I was working on a track in logic that i was mostly sourcing the polychrome presets and i plan to add the same functionality to all my other plugins. The Gojira archetype is one i have my eyes on first
ingvay7··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
thanks.Frankly — the system prompt is the sauce. The LLM has encyclopedic knowledge of every amp, cab, and pedal ever made which still blows my mind, but without guardrails it'll confidently tell you to boost mids on a JCM800 (which is how you disappear in a loud mix i've noticed). That era cheat sheet is all the working knowledge over the years of spectacularly failing to get the right tones.

Once someone does that encoding work for a genre, it's reusable forever I think. I'm pretty comfortable with late-80s/early-90s rock well enough to write the specs. But you're right — a "modern metal" prompt, a shoegaze one (which my teenager wants), a funkone, etc - that's the next layer. tone_system.md just needs to be updated. I plan to expand this to more plugins. Contributions welcome.

ingvay7··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
I shred guitar in the evenings to focus on technique, but a hectic day job means I get almost no time to twiddle knobs on my amp sim chasing the right tone. So I built a tool where I just prompt "Brian May Solo Bohemian Rhapsody" — the LLM fills a small JSON contract and feeds to a script that generates the XML, and I load it straight into the plugin. Two minutes and I feel like I'm tearing it up at Wembley '85 :)...almost.

The pattern generalized is LLM finds the presets,i can even upload a file to make it zone in, the code validates and loads into the plugin. Also using this contract/adapter approach for Terraform, game engine presets, CI pipelines, etc.

ingvay7··on Compare AWS and Azure Services to Google Cloud
Ive used Azure and AWS in a couple of large organizations (mulit-million $ cloud contracts) and the Azure commitment for customer success is a big differentiator. Ive literally had Azure engineers as an extension of my team (free of cost offered by azure as part of customer success teams) so much so that they start blending into the team. The Azure products have steadily gotten better (ADB, Azure SQL, Functions etc) over the years (with a few duds as expected). AWS - it didnt matter how big we were, we still got the feeling they never really leant in or they had "more important" stuff to focus on than customer success. All the POCs/side projects we have done on GCP - it has always felt like something built by a bunch of seriously talented technologists FOR technologists. Support seemed a distant entity just like most google products - that has led to significant nervousness at the top leadership to invest in a product that may not be Google's highest priority.
