infp_arborist··on No Man Is an Island
It seems we (now more than ever) have to fight for fun, fight for a shared meaningful reality. Arriving again at the idea that enlightenment is a group activity.
infp_arborist··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Good point. That's what a data center is called in German: 'Rechenzentrum', 'rechnen' = to compute, calculate
infp_arborist··on Creepy Crawlies
Yes, that seems to work for Altcha: https://altcha.org/docs/integration/proof-of-work-captcha/

Edit: this is already in discussion for Anubis: https://github.com/TecharoHQ/anubis/issues/94

infp_arborist··on Qwen3.8-Flash-Next
Does it really matter? What about including all relevant and up-to-date literature as skills for local models? I have no experience with this but I am pretty sure someone has already thought about it.
infp_arborist··on We mourn our craft
Then we can finally turn off the computers and go outside to play with friends.
infp_arborist··on We mourn our craft
From the beginning the providers have been interchangeable and subject to competition. Do we have reason to believe that this will change?
infp_arborist··on Court orders restart of all US offshore wind power construction
Let's start by taxing the ultra-rich.
infp_arborist··on Court orders restart of all US offshore wind power construction
Disagree. There are effective strategies for creating more sustainable economies and societies. Affordable housing, education, universal healthcare will make us all happier and healthier.

We know how to fix lots of problems, and money is orthogonal to the issue.

Sentences like "They have to go down..." are really a symptom of a static "there is no alternative" view.

infp_arborist··on Maybe you’re not trying
That sounds like role-reversal. Securely attached people are more flexible (than avoidant or helpless) in both receiving and giving.
infp_arborist··on Austrian ministry kicks out Microsoft in favor of Nextcloud
With AGI supposedly around the corner and (more realistically) current LLMs performing at least incrementally better -- why are we even thinking that Microsoft's or Google's solutions will provide enough value vs competitors in 3, 5 or 10 years? Cheaper or free alternatives might soon reach feature parity, and even previously complicated deployment is now aided by AI.
infp_arborist··on Everything around LLMs is still magical and wishful thinking
Re. 2 - I find it fascinating that people using coding agents have seemingly no problem to reveal their full codebases to AI companies.
infp_arborist··on The early days of Linux (2023)
For the biggest part of my life it seemed that all these technical accomplishments were the work of untouchable geniuses, but reading this story is also very telling about the value of long-term friendship and financial/societal stability to support each other's explorations.
infp_arborist··on OpenAI whistleblower found dead in San Francisco apartment
Less techy, but how about personal relationships you can trust?
infp_arborist··on Who is responsible for the greatest change to our language? Teenage girls
So I am guessing if we teach teenage girls (and future mothers) nonviolent communication, we will have peace in our communities in a couple of generations?
infp_arborist··on Study reveals people's faces evolve to match their name
wouldn't this be easy to control for by mostly offering names from the same ethnic background?
infp_arborist··on Show HN: Improve cognitive focus in 1 minute
I really appreciate George Haas as a meditation teacher. He specializes in those of us who are "f*cked up the most" (i.e. attachment disturbances)
infp_arborist··on What does friendship look like in America?
"Friends" by Robin Dunbar explains that pretty well. Highly recommended.
infp_arborist··on Rewriting wipEout
Just a reminder that BallisticNG is an equally addictive Wipeout clone and available on all Steam platforms. A Nintendo Switch port was also announced.

infp_arborist··on I'm never investing in Google's smart home ecosystem again
I have said it before and will say it again:

Google wants to look amateurish for as long as possible to avoid stronger regulation.

infp_arborist··on YunoHost – Operating system aiming to simplify server administration
I have been operating YunoHost on a cheap Hetzner VPS since 2020. So far no big issues with the base system, it's been running continuously.

I mostly use MyTinytodo (as an alternative to Google Keep), Shaarli (bookmarking) and Wekan (a Kanban board).

infp_arborist··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
I would like to add that humans are in heat only when they are healthy and feel safe (emotionally, financially, physically). The traumatized modern western society tends to get in the way of this.
infp_arborist··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
I totally agree. In no way is it helpful to see sex as a need. I prefer to see it as a strategy (and sometimes fixation).
infp_arborist··on Everyone Is Beautiful and No One Is Horny
So what is the unmet need behind an obsession with sexless/child-like figures?

My guess is unfulfilled (genetic) longing for a "real childhood", where a child does not have to take on adult roles. This means available, stable, supporting and functioning parent figures.

Not having fully experienced that leads to "holes in roles", which want to be addressed and re-nurtured one way or the other.

infp_arborist··on How long would society last during a total grid collapse?
Thanks for bringing that up. I don't remember who said: "The answer is _always_ community."
infp_arborist··on Pinboard vs. Raindrop
I use Shaarli on Yunohost, but there are many more options: https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted#boo...
infp_arborist··on Ask HN: How to find what I am really good at?
What MBTI type are you? I have spent the last two years learning everything I can about my type and it has raised my self-esteem a lot.

Also, and possibly a lot more painful to answer: What attachment style are you?

infp_arborist··on 3x new books added to the Pirate Library Mirror
> Until then we will have to work, allocate resources and carry on as normal.

The real fun in my life began when I learned that this is a belief and not an immovable law.

infp_arborist··on 3x new books added to the Pirate Library Mirror
Yes, there _is_ a reality we know. But that does not mean that things _ought_ to be the same in the future.
infp_arborist··on 3x new books added to the Pirate Library Mirror
I'd like to start from a worldview of abundance and invite you to imagine a future in which we (as a society) will be able to answer a related question: What are the prerequisites for accomplishing the missing, painful 20% of any project out there?
