infomofo··on Tool touted as 'first AI software engineer' is bad at its job, testers claim
I feel like this whole thing is a PR campaign to make people empathize with AI.
infomofo··on Google is picking ChatGPT responses from Quora as correct answer
Google used to have a feature to suppress sites or domains from your personal search result. This was back in the day where any programming question would lead to a paywalled site like experts-exchange which was a frustrating experience so it was easy to block. I suppose google removed that feature because it messed with monetization possibilities in search, but it is another indication of the way that google has really deprioritized the quality of the search experience for the user.
infomofo··on Fortnite’s success led to months of intense crunch at Epic Games
> “One senior guy would say, ‘Just get more bodies.’ That’s what the contractors were called: bodies.

> Epic rapidly hired new staff to handle the deluge, but that the problem couldn’t simply be solved immediately with more employees. “It happened so quick. Literally one day, we were a small amount of people. The next day it was just, ‘Hey, by the way, now you have 50 more people on this shift who have absolutely no training.’

It's amazing to me all these years later how true the lessons of "The Mythical Man Month" were. At the time reading the book in my Freshman Comp Sci course the book seemed so abstract. If anything though, it should be required reading for management, instead of developers.

infomofo··on Ask HN: What is the most LGBT friendly company you know of, preferably hiring?
With the glaring exception of their short lived CEO...
infomofo··on Tech takes over: New York is the sector's second city
Historically, it might be because the T (the Boston Subway) doesn't run 24 hours, it shuts around 1am, so most people have to make arrangements to get home well before then or risk having to take a pricey cab home.
infomofo··on I Wrote Down Everything I Learned While Programming for a Month
I've been doing something similar using jrnl. I use hashtags so I could theoretically look up stuff in the past.

I.e.

> jrnl "@vim type _:noh_ to remove the last search's highlighting"

And then a week later when I can't remember, I could use

> jrnl -n 10 -and @vim

infomofo··on How Not to Sort by Average Rating (2009)
Untappd is also weird because you know that the producers of some of these small brewery beers actually look at these checkins. A lot of the beer drinkers I know will prefer to not rate a beer instead of giving it a sub-3 rating.
infomofo··on Ask HN: Monetizing newsletter with 2M and 1M members
Just in case the OP goes with this you should be very careful-

Amazon Affiliate links in email are explicitly against their terms of service and you could get removed from the program.

infomofo··on Important Changes to Mandrill
Does anyone have any experience with SparkPost? They seem attractive to switch from Mandrill because they also use handlebars as a templating language.
infomofo··on What MongoDB got right
I agree- I was a huge fan of MongoDB when it came out because of the unique data structures it enabled easily. However when it came time to select a new database for my new project, I found that the JSON support that PSQL had added gave me all the flexibility I needed while still in a somewhat relational form, and additionally it is dead simple to spin up postgres RDS instance in AWS, and it's a pain to use Mongo there.
infomofo··on Ask HN: Recommend a recommendation system
You may also want to mention in your post what languages and frameworks you're already using.

If you have a java, scala, or clojure backend, using Mahout to make item to item recommendations is pretty simple to do. If you have a different language, I would just look into libraries for collaborative filtering in that language.

infomofo··on Any good open-source self-hosted evernote alternatives?
I use bittorrent sync for a lot of stuff, including a directory of RTF notes I take. While I'm on my mac I use Notational Velocity to edit them which is my favorite notes app ever. I haven't found a good way to edit the rtf docs on my android phone, though, which is kind of crucial. If anyone has a good solution involving bittorrent sync that is compatible with notational velocity on the mac, I'd love to hear it.
infomofo··on Ask HN: Should I Quit My Job?
> Two jobs in under two years? I think I could explain, but I might not even get that chance.

Just a note here- I agree with most other people that if you work at a place for a short while and leave, I would just leave it off your resume. You will get asked about that in interviews, and in my experience giving interviews it's a red flag when a candidate "goes negative" about a current or previous employer; even if the reasons are totally valid (which yours sound like they are) it can come off as bitter or petty in the context of an interview and should be avoided if possible. There are ways to talk about the kind of employer you're looking for without directly maligning a previous one.

infomofo··on Ask HN: What do you wear to programming interviews?
I think there are a few considerations based on the type of role. If you're expected to interact with clients, then I think a full suit for an interview is appropriate, basically to demonstrate that you can present yourself in a business environment if necessary.

If the role is purely for programming, and your impression is that the other developers at this company do not wear them, I would not wear a tie and jacket- it could come off as an incorrect cultural fit.

I don't think you'll feel overdressed in any work environment if you wear a button up shirt, comfortable slacks, and understated dress shoes.

infomofo··on Now on Twitter: Group direct messages and mobile video camera
So now when your friend's account gets hacked it can be way more annoying? Because that's seriously all my DMs ever are.
infomofo··on Build hybrid apps with the Ionic Creator
i'm personally a fan of the chrome mobile app framework https://github.com/MobileChromeApps/mobile-chrome-apps. It's on top of cordova as well and provides some additional functionality from the chrome extension framework, like oauth support and some additional security features.
infomofo··on What’s Behind the Crash in the Gold Market?
I'm surprised Cyprus's bailout plan isn't mentioned in this article. As part of it's bailout package, Cyprus was forced to liquidate it's gold stores. While this amount (~14 tons) is negligible to the world gold balance- the amount of gold that other troubled European nations have (Italy, Spain, Portugal) is massive. If they are forced to go through similar plans, the flooding of the world gold market would greatly increase the supply.
