infocollector··on Improving distributed caching performance and efficiency at Pinterest
I do hope Pinterest would fund memcached development going forward, especially the language clients for memcached. I've been using pylibmc to access memcached fast, and that project seems to be almost dead (https://github.com/lericson/pylibmc/issues).
infocollector··on Tailscale SSH
Hi Brad: Thanks for helping out with this feature! I've been one of the early users of tailscale. My network is around 50 machines. I've recently started having issues with ssh on some of my machines, especially from mac m1 -> some ubuntu boxes. Could this be related to this new feature? Any suggestions/pointers on how to debug these issues?
infocollector··on Web Push for Safari
This is support for web push notifications in safari it seems. (https://web.dev/push-notifications-overview/) - and it plays nice with macs. I guess it is useful if you want to support Safari for your webapp + use push notifications.
infocollector··on You Should Compile Your Python and Here’s Why
Thanks for writing this! I just reproduced your experiment and could get the ~10x performance gain (0.42/0.02) on my mac m1 (I had to uninstall typing - which hopefully gets fixed soon). I think this is a great way of attacking both type checking, as well as a meaningful speedup in the CI cycle.
infocollector··on RDP Clients for Debian: An incomplete review
It seems TeamViewer and Anydesk also work on Debian. Has anyone any thoughts on these commercial solutions? (They both have free versions)
infocollector··on Popular Tibetan singer Tsewang Norbu dies of self-immolation protest
I do wish the world would be more sympathetic to Ukraine and Tibet than it is currently (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibet).
infocollector··on I'm so sorry everyone. Or: why I'm switching to Cloudflare
Curious: How does Cloudflare pay for the email routing network bandwidth + hosting charges it incurs for its free services? I ask because it seems Google ran this for a decade and then found out that it is time to charge for it.
infocollector··on Amazon Elastic File System Update – Sub-Millisecond Read Latency
Does anyone have any benchmarks with AWS FSX (LustreFS) vs EFS - how do they compare in random/sequential access?
infocollector··on Leaving academia
It is fairly easy for a person in industry to go back to academia as a student. If you are serious - talk to a faculty member - and chart out a plan.
infocollector··on A New Coefficient of Correlation
Am I reading the paper definition correctly? If yes, why does the vertical line and horizontal line in 2D have so different correlations?

  def corr(x,y):
    n = len(x)
    an_array = np.stack((x, y), axis=-1)
    sorted_array = an_array[np.argsort(an_array[:, 0])]
    r = rankdata(sorted_array[:,1])
    s = sum(np.abs(np.diff(r)))
    return 1.0 - (3.0 \* s/(n\*n -1.0))
infocollector··on Exa - A Modern Replacement for ls
I've been using natls - has anyone compared that with exa? pros and cons?
infocollector··on Pelosi defends stock trading by lawmakers. ‘We are a free-market economy’
Not sure if these family connections of Pelosi are widely known : https://calmatters.org/commentary/2019/01/gavin-newsoms-keep...
infocollector··on Launch HN: Preflight (YC W19) – Better automated testing for web apps
Can you please add a pricing page to your website? Also, can one run these tests with an api key on ci/cd?
infocollector··on CPython's main branch running in the browser with WebAssembly
This looks exciting. If anyone knows how to, perhaps they can report how much space this uses in the browser? Some benchmarks? Someday soon I hope we can use this for developing code on the browser to aid with web applications.
infocollector··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Isn't it true that in design the hot water touches non-metallic parts, which is not good for you?
infocollector··on New – EC2 Instances (G5) with Nvidia A10G Tensor Core GPUs
Does anyone know how this will compare with the v100 GPUs that AWS offers currently? Any benchmark pointers?
infocollector··on A great organic-food fraud
Perhaps someone here knows about this better. I would love to learn more. Another problem is that we certify international crops from India and China where the soil/water itself has been at times so polluted, that no matter what one does, there are consequences of eating that food. Perhaps there is a way to put random testing from consumers (or restaurants) in place to fix this issue? (So a consumer can send items/produce to a location for testing)
infocollector··on Feature comparison of ack, ag, Git-grep, grep and ripgrep
When I need a faster grep, I love ugrep (https://github.com/Genivia/ugrep - especially when I am searching compressed logs for debugging).
infocollector··on BYD has reportedly received 10 GWh of orders from Tesla for LFP batteries
Just in case -> BYD Co. Ltd. is a Chinese manufacturing company headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, founded by Wang Chuanfu in February 1995. Perhaps someone can comment on quality of these batteries compared to the current car batteries Tesla uses?
infocollector··on University of Florida gets a 1% cut of Gatorade profits
Policies and politics like these, made the University of Florida kill its Computer Science program [http://tiny.cc/y5bjuz] - almost. So when you "Go Gators", perhaps its time to look at the UF contracts for hiring faculty.
infocollector··on Nuitka: An extremely compatible Python compiler
If you used pip install nutika -U - on both mac and linux, it doesn't find an installation candidate for me. pip install -U "https://github.com/Nuitka/Nuitka/archive/develop.zip" works on both currently. But this does not get "nutika" on the path. Perhaps someone here is more familiar with the installation system and can comment?
infocollector··on Use Pixar's story formula to win over investors
Any thoughts on how to fix this? Regulation will be gamed the same way the current system has a problem.
infocollector··on Software Engineering's Greatest Hits [video]
Thanks! Seems like short cycles of development including interleaving testing - is the key in this paper. TDD might just achieve this by a fluke, but it should help that - unless you do this TLD or even test addition in cycles. Any thoughts on that?
infocollector··on Software Engineering's Greatest Hits [video]
TDD slide has an error it seems.

In slide 18 Fucci2016 is referred for a replication study with 39 professionals. That study only uses students. That slide quotes Fucci2016, but I do not see that quote in the paper. He talks about TDD and hatemail and is not careful about references? Perhaps this was just a small error - the reference is incorrect. I am not sure.

It seems believable that Test-first vs Test-last might have similar impacts. I just checked one thing in this talk and it turned out to problematic. Has anyone else done fact-checking on his stories?

infocollector··on Ripgrep 13.0
I've been using ugrep these days (https://github.com/Genivia/ugrep) - and am pretty happy with it.
infocollector··on OpenAI Announces Funding for Startups
To make things lucrative, one thing that could be done is to remove the condition that OpenAI APIs must be used. But - the people who are going to pitch to OpenAI also are opening themselves up for competition. Another option would be to spin out an OpenAI Venture firm without strings attached?
infocollector··on Launch HN: Porter (YC S20) – Open-source Heroku in your own cloud
Any chance you could add Azure support as well? Perhaps there is something particular that is making that harder?
infocollector··on IEEE Medal of Honor Goes to Data Compression Pioneer Jacob Ziv
Well deserved. Just in case you were not aware of the variants of LZ[iv] for dictionary based (or sliding window based) lossless compression -> https://tinyurl.com/y3h76c4j
infocollector··on CIA Releases UFO Documents
When I read a few PDFs in this collection - it does not seem helpful. Anyone else perhaps can confirm that this is the case?
infocollector··on Huawei Tops Intel as Top Linux Kernel Contributor for 5.10
How is security taken care of when contributions are being done by Huawei (backdoors in 41k lines of sourcode?)? But I am guessing there is no real fight between open source software and state actors - perhaps someone who knows more about the security of the kernel can comment.
