infinii··on Ask HN: How do the engineers working on open source editors get their funding?
See if Jetbrains is hiring.
infinii··on Ask HN: How do you handle maternity leave for a critical member on a tiny team?
^this Managing a maternity leave is much different from the 'getting hit by a bus' scenario. if you have a key man risk and lose someone due to accident or resignation, you hire and deal with the pain of getting them up to speed. With maternity leaves, you're legally required to maintain that position for the person to come back to. Hiring a permanent staff isn't an option usually. Contractors are best bet, however for 1 month maternity leaves; it doesn't leave much time for the contractor to become proficient/worthy.
infinii··on Ask HN: What up with these startup salaries?
So how do you protect yourself against this? Is there something you can put in the initial contract to prevent reverse splitting in the future?
infinii··on Ask HN: What up with these startup salaries?
But is this 'legal' even if the employee didn't sign anything to change the previously agreed upon arrangement (options)??
infinii··on Inside a Chinese Bitcoin Mine That's Grossing $1.5M a Month
The past was the past. Huge crackdown on corruption and graft is making it much harder to offshore. Even if they can get it out, people are watching their spending habits outside of China.
infinii··on Ask HN: Why WhastApp Web is currently only available on Google Chrome?
the web version, not the mobile app.
infinii··on Java for Everything
Is there an update to this book or something similar that speaks to Java +7?
infinii··on Ask HN: Bootstrapped business is good but slow growth. Should I raise money?
See if your company allows for a sabbatical. If they do, save the side revenue for a few months to prep for the sabbatical. Then devote yourself 100% to it to push it to the next step. Afterwards, you have a job waiting for you and you should have done enough work to see whether the future of your business is viable.

Employees and/or partners is also a good idea.

infinii··on On the horrific state of JavaScript frameworks
It's a consequence of too many choices. A new framework pops up showing great promise. Nothing is every fully polished to begin with but before it can gain widespread adoption where contributors fill in the blanks, a new kid on the block shows up and any momentum with the first one is lost as people move on looking for grassier fields.
infinii··on BankAPI
From the docs, I can't figure out how this is "decentralized". All I see are encrypted and compressed.
infinii··on Ask HN: What's the best technical eBook you have read?
Very good point about jumping around in technical books. I rarely read any tech books for this reason. eBooks are better suited for casual reading which is done front to back. Tech/reference books suffer on eReaders due to poor navigation and insufficient linking.
infinii··on Cryptostocks
This is no more than a crypto play on crowd funding, under the guise of a stock market; with effectively no consumer protection mechanisms.
infinii··on ShowHN: SnapTalk, "Voice Texting" made easy
As others have mentioned, there's nothing new about voice texting. Other platforms such as WeChat have hundreds of millions of users already. The only differentiating thing you have is the ability to send to non app users (which you mention in reply to others). So why isn't your single differentiating feature, mentioned in the OP or your website?
infinii··on Rolls-Royce is designing drone ships to challenge $375B freight industry
Yeah. Automate it to within a few miles off shore. Then each port maintains a small staff of captains who are ferried out to each ship and brings it to port.
infinii··on Ask HN: What are some creative uses of the Bitcoin protocol?
spelled ethereum https://www.ethereum.org/
infinii··on Ask HN: How do you read your programming books?
I don't read technical books back to back which makes using a Kindle difficult. It's hard to jump sections or utilize the ToC/Index effectively on a Kindle.
infinii··on Ask HN: How do you speed read technical books?
outsource the page flipping
infinii··on Ask HN: Best introduction to finance?

infinii··on Amazon's War On The House Of Otto, Germany's $18 Billion Family
Hermes working conditions might not be the result of the market dynamics itself but you cannot put the blame on the Otto Group either. Hermes was a wholly separate company that was purchased by the Otto Group. It's not like OG bought the company and came in and put in place all these conditions.
infinii··on Amazon's War On The House Of Otto, Germany's $18 Billion Family
Hermes Logistics is but ONE of Otto Group's +100 companies. HL isn't even a mainstay of the OG portfolio as they were only purchased a few years ago. Judge not, the whole bushel because of one bad apple.
infinii··on Missing Airplane Flew On for Hours
So after 5 days, the hijackers are allowing all the hostages to charge their phones?
infinii··on Flexcoin is shutting down
Because the majority of BTC owners at the moment are speculators without technical savvy to create their own wallets. Storing BTC on these free online wallets is easier and humans will usually take the easier path.
infinii··on Flexcoin is shutting down
If they secured their servers (from hacking), they could theoretically leave everything in hot storage (although it's not necessary for normal operations as others have stated).
infinii··on That which does not kill Bitcoin makes Bitcoin stronger
Try explaining to your local regulators why your bitcoin balance has traces of illegal/laundered money in it...because a drug overlord's purchase was destroyed and the funds were gifted to the community.
infinii··on That which does not kill Bitcoin makes Bitcoin stronger
Just curious but where do the funds go when the transaction is 'destroyed'?
infinii··on Ask HN: What are the best sources of news for iOS app dev?
To avoid clutter, it might be more practical to start your own ASK thread for this.
infinii··on Statement Regarding Bitcoin Withdrawal Delays
I'm probably oversimplifying this or missing some crucial step but...

All your users by BTC at i.e. $10 and store them on your (Gox) exchange. Price jumps to +600 and you subsequently get 50k fiat withdrawal requests. Am I a total cluebie to wonder how they can fund such withdrawals? Maybe there isn't sufficient capital reserve or liquidity between BTC and fiat to withstand such demand?

infinii··on Ask HN: Gamifying Labor Union Recruitment
Why 22?

If you got everyone making < $100 an hour, you would cripple the nation and have a greater bargaining position.

infinii··on Ask HN: Online Gambling + Oculus Rift
At it's core, gambling is gambling. The person mindlessly pulling a lever/button while sitting at a slot machine for hours on end, isn't really immersed in anything with regards to the surrounding environment.

The OR could marry VR to more normal day to day activities IMO. Imagine a dinner date in your apartment where you and your date put on headsets and voila, you're both dining anywhere in the world.

infinii··on Execute SQL against structured text like CSV or TSV
Slightly OT but how can I create an animated gif like that?
