infinii··on Companies of the future: No CEO, no boss, managed by blockchain
The concept of a DAO is too simplistic when presented in all these examples. An organization has multiple levels and on each level there are many decisions being made constantly. Some escalate up, some don't. You cannot just expect that each decision within an organization will be decided via a DAO's shareholder voting mechanism because what will ultimately happen is, there are so many actions to vote on, shareholders will ignore most. If there were 100 shareholders, 2 voted yes, 1 voted no and 97 didn't vote. Do you proceed? This is why a board exists, to represent the interests of shareholders. How much work do you think would get done if you needed to prioritize things with a large body of shareholders on a regular basis?
infinii··on Ask HN: Why does mobile appear to have a better dev UX compared to desktop UIs?
Not to mention the Accelerometer.
infinii··on Ask HN: Best Laptop for Developers Right Now?
Why even bother doing ML on a laptop? Use Amazon's Machine Learning cloud to conserve your battery.
infinii··on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
"You can, however, put many[1] different GPUs in the same system, and then the onus is on the CPU program to properly manage and send work to each one separately. This is not SLI."

Interesting that you mention this as I've been searching for an answer before I build a ML rig and embark on learning it. Is there any benefit for ML performance if I put a GTX 970 and a 1080[ti|x] in the same machine? Just trying to figure out how to re-use spare parts.

infinii··on Ask HN: What antivirus do you run on Windows, if any?
Avira offers a free one that's served me well. In fact, I also started using it on my OSX.
infinii··on Ash HN: How do you handle looking at the screen for long hours?
I also use f.lux. Or I'll mix it up with my pair of Gunnar glasses which accomplish the same thing.
infinii··on Ask HN: How much do you make in London?
This thread has me thinking whether all those claims that financial compensation isn't that important in job satisfaction is true or not. How often do we see threads asking about non-financial benefits.
infinii··on Technical debt as an opportunity to accumulate technical wealth
Ignoring the one time aspect. It's the standardization that is important. Docker environments enforce uniformity that are beneficial for testing. No more of the "it works on my machine" excuses. Although the article mentioned development environment specifically, there is recurring benefit in being able to power up a Docker VM for testing purposes.

You probably don't have to deal with customs for a domestic flight between Sydney and Melbourne. You can't just measure flight time.
infinii··on Can Google or Facebook ever have a true competitor?
And there was Myspace and Friendster before Facebook.
infinii··on Rails has won: The Elephant in the Room
Your project plan is measured in years?

All the orange crops just froze over from the chills running down the backs of all the Agile\Lean practitioners.

infinii··on Ask HN: People making $150k+ / yr, what was your career path?
Strange that you use a hockey stick for your analogy when most would visualize it the opposite; flat and then a steep incline. As that's how it's held.
infinii··on FBI paid professional hackers one-time fee to crack San Bernardino iPhone
I was expecting you to link a 10 yr old article to prove your point.
infinii··on How can I speed up app deployment?
You need to tell us how you currently deploy if you'd like to get suggestions on how to speed it up.
infinii··on Ask HN: Should I be concerned about using company's computer for side projects?
It's not just "buy a notebook". If you really want to cover all bases, don't even do the personal work in the office on company time...even if you are using your own laptop.
infinii··on Congress finally showed it's willing to fight the FBI on encryption
Agreed.

By Comey's argument, manufacturers shouldn't put authentication in the devices as that's the FBI's responsibility?

infinii··on Harvard University – CS109 Data Science
Lecture videos are in Flash. Sigh
infinii··on Ask HN: As a developer/engineer, how do you use LinkedIn?
I hate it. I rarely use it but only keep it for that rainy day should I ever need to seek employment.

what I hate the most is that they force me through that annoying multipage wizard (with no cancel/skip) to connect to new contacts each time I open the mobile app.

infinii··on I worked in a video store for 25 yrs – what I learned as the industry died
While vinyl records have made a resurgence from near extinction. It's unlikely the same will happen for the video stores as music seems more timeless and collectible than movies.

What concerns are you talking about in regards to Docker?
infinii··on WooThemes joins Automattic
You're not the first person to make such a comment. You're also not the first to make such comments without suggesting an alternative CMS that addresses all of your concerns.
infinii··on Ask HN: Digital Ocean vs. AWS
Back in the early 2000's, we were told (by media) we would run out of IPv4 addresses shortly and needed to move to IPv6. Over a decade later and we're still not there.

Who's actually using IPv6 now and why?

infinii··on Ask HN: How to organize a distributed design team?
Much of the problems with distributed teams is behavioural IMO. We work in a global team and I repeatedly see my local colleagues having to attend late calls to accommodate for the team in another timezone. I constantly tell them to refuse such meeting requests and force the team in the other region to change their practices to deal with any global issues first thing in the morning such as email queries, meetings, requests, etc. Instead, they come in, grab coffees, leisurely waste time clearing out their inbox and it's noon before you know it. If they devised a simple method of scanning mails from the other region first and then reply/meet immediately, it's make everyone's lives easier.
infinii··on The Architecture of Open Source Applications
Take a look at the pricing page. The ePub and PDF versions are a fraction of the cost of the paperbacks. Finally someone with a clue! It's always annoyed me to no ends that Amazon only provides a small discount for their Kindle version compared to a paperback.

Not only that but does it really take double the effort for an invement manager to manage $100B compared to $50B?
infinii··on Ask HN: Your lead developer got bored. What to do?
I couldn't disagree more. Obviously it shouldn't be as drastic as having to leave to get a raise. But paying your employees more does not guarantee they will stay or be extra motivated.

https://hbr.org/2013/04/does-money-really-affect-motiv

"Other than its functional exchange value, pay is a psychological symbol, and the meaning of money is largely subjective. For example, there are marked individual differences in people’s tendency to think or worry about money, and different people value money for different reasons (e.g., as a means to power, freedom, security, or love). If companies want to motivate their workforce, they need to understand what their employees really value — and the answer is bound differ for each individual. Research shows that different values are differentially linked to engagement. For example, income goals based on the pursuit of power, narcissism, or overcoming self-doubt are less rewarding and effective than income goals based on the pursuit of security, family support, and leisure time. Perhaps it is time to compensate people not only according to what they know or do, but also for what they want."

infinii··on Ask HN: Your lead developer got bored. What to do?
It's your problem that you couldn't convince them of your worth and get fair compensation. And I don't mean that you hold the keys to the kingdom and ask the king for ransom. Simply quantify the benefits that your system provides and prove that it's in their best interests to have you working there.
