inamberclad··on Async Rust vs RTOS showdown (2022)
No, this is really the whole point of an RTOS. It can preempt low priority tasks to respond to critical events.
inamberclad··on Trump made more than $1B on crypto deals, part of 2025 windfall
Sadly I think not. They had their opportunity in 2020.
inamberclad··on Examining circuit boards from the Space Shuttle's I/O Processor
Amazing article, thanks! However, I think when you said "...heat was transmitted by convection through the metal plate inside each page...", you probably meant conduction, right?

Convective heat transfer in metal would be a worrying event on the Space Shuttle!

inamberclad··on Running Tesla Model 3's computer on my desk using parts from crashed cars
SpaceWire is also just LVDS with an uber-minimal routing protocol. It runs on a lot of satellites.
inamberclad··on If you thought code writing speed was your problem you have bigger problems
When you get to the really tightly controlled industries, your "formal" language becomes carefully structured English.
inamberclad··on I Ported Coreboot to the ThinkPad X270
Oh almost certainly. PROCHOT is programmable.
inamberclad··on Akin's Laws of Spacecraft Design (2011) [pdf]
I have these taped up above my desk at work. I've been able to point to at least half of them from one time or another
inamberclad··on CEO of health care software company sentenced for $1B fraud conspiracy
I'd like to see a prison sentence for corporations.
inamberclad··on QNX Self-Hosted Developer Desktop
Wow, this could be quite useful for poking at the head unit in my car. It's also running QNX.
inamberclad··on Military standard on software control levels
Absolutely. If you look at an extensively used standard like DO-178C for avionics, it really says very little about how to program. Instead, the emphasis is on making sure that the software has implemented system level requirements correctly.
inamberclad··on Ford teams up with Renault to make EVs that can rival Chinese brands
Ah, not coming to the US.
inamberclad··on The power of proximity to coworkers [pdf]
Framing "less code written" as a trade-off is a red flag to me. Anyone who judges productivity by lines of code written should inquire with me about a limited time, fantastic deal on a bridge...
inamberclad··on How Slide Rules Work
For the past 10 years, I've worn a slide rule every day. It's a small circular one modeled after the E6B aviation slide rule, with markers for common aviation conversions.
inamberclad··on The Death of Arduino?
Thanks to the open source nature of the Arduino ecosystem, you can make it so!
inamberclad··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
It's also because the cars are getting so much taller, especially in the US. Driving a smaller car is terrifying when a lifted Dodge fitted with anti-aircraft spotlights blinds you while going the opposite direction.
inamberclad··on Being poor vs. being broke
Absolutely. Our disposable society is a privilege for those who can afford it and an absolute curse for those who can't.
inamberclad··on A modern 35mm film scanner for home
The biggest pains of film scanning are in the post process color balance and dust removal. Unless this can improve those parts of the workflow, it's only going to be a minor improvement. I like the continuous reel movement of this scanner vs a flatbed though, that can improve the physical workflow quite a bit.
inamberclad··on At the end you use `git bisect`
'git bisect run' is probably one of the most important software tools ever.
inamberclad··on Jujutsu at Google [video]
Not really on topic, but I think it's funny that most MMA style gyms always offer Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai as two classes, right after each other. Of the two, Jiu Jitsu seems to generally be the more popular one.
inamberclad··on DoorDash and Waymo launch autonomous delivery service in Phoenix
In house delivery has existed for a lot of business for a long time. For instance, nearly every pizza store would do delivery themselves. Many still do. However those services didn't introduce a middleman between you, the store, and the driver who extracted money from all 3.
inamberclad··on Jeep pushed software update that bricked all 2024 Wrangler 4xe models
Enjoy your nazimobile
inamberclad··on Matrices can be your friends (2002)
Matlab deliberately notes that its matrices are laid out like this since most matrix operations occur on columns, a whole column can be loaded on a cache line.
inamberclad··on American solar farms
It makes fantastic sense in Texas too because air conditioning is such a high portion of demand. Clean energy production reaches its peak at midday when everyone has their AC going flat out.
inamberclad··on Jeep pushed software update that bricked all 2024 Wrangler 4xe models
The cyber truck, tragically.
inamberclad··on [dead]
When someone vehemently supports a strongman government, endorses a racist view of population dynamics, the banning of books, the repression of ethnic and gender minorities, and unleashing a jackbooted gang of thugs who perform extrajudicial violence and abductions, what else should they be called? That description is applicable to both a 1930s bona-fide Nazi and a modern day Trump supporter.
inamberclad··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
Network wide ad blockers like PiHole are also quite useful but they can cause some confusion from the client side because things just break for no apparent reason.
inamberclad··on Introduction to Ada: a project-based exploration with rosettas
Nvidia is notably using Ada for serval modern projects.
inamberclad··on Introduction to Ada: a project-based exploration with rosettas
Alire is just a package and toolchain manager that AdaCore wrote in the style of Cargo. It still runs GNAT under the hood.
inamberclad··on Installing UEFI Firmware on ARM SBCs
UEFI is a fairly insane spec, but at least it's a fairly complete spec. Following it is preferable to custom nonsense. (Spoken as someone writing a custom non-UEFI bootloader right now)
inamberclad··on Weather Model based on ADS-B
I used to use a weather app on Android called DarkSky that did a pretty good job with local predictions. Apple bought them out.
