imwithstoopid··on Common Lisp Quick Reference (2018)
I would suggest that this is what Racket is

they don't call it Lisp because it came from Scheme but they wisely realized the first step to making changes is to stop calling it Scheme otherwise purists will just rain fire on it and insist on living in the past

from a practical perspective it seems perfectly safe and reasonable to say Racket is Lisp2023

otherwise maybe elisp? it is by far the most important thing with "lisp" in its name in 2023

I would argue perl has a superior practical elegance

so you can write perl in a kinda-sexp style if you really want to (no one does, which tells you something)...but you get a kinda-sexp built-in syntax for hashes whereas lisps make you construct them with bolted on functions

imwithstoopid··on An Interview with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang About AI’s iPhone Moment
Nvidia is in an excellent position - they have CUDA as you point out, and they are moving that into server room dominance in this application space

Google has TPUs but have these even made a tiny dent in Nvidia's position?

I assume anything Apple is cooking is using Nvidia in the server room already

Intel seems completely absent from this market

AMD seems content to limit its ambitions to punching Intel

its Nvidia's game to lose at this point...I wonder when they start moving in the other direction and realize they have the power to introduce their own client platform (I secretly wish they would try to mainstream a linux laptop running on Nvidia ARM but obviously this is just a fantasy)

if anything, I think Huang may not be ambitious enough!

imwithstoopid··on Analysis: Wall Street push for bank rescues clashes with Washington realities
people seem to forget that Treasury initially took the same tough-love approach in 2008 and then utterly cratered when they realized there was never really a choice

this isn't 2008 but the logic is the same...Yellen will talk tough as long as the fallout is limited to boutique banks like SVB...otherwise it will be TARP part two and she knows it

imwithstoopid··on America’s online privacy problems are much bigger than TikTok
I recommend looking up the Battle of the Chosin Resevoir....worst military defeat ever suffered by the US (worse than Bastogne imho), the Chinese didn't even have one gun per soldier...some didn't have boots...they DEMOLISHED the best equipped army in the world (and this was during Korea when the US military was the unquestioned top dog)

and btw if you are going to go look at casualty counts, don't bother, its well understood that the Chinese lost ten men for every US soldier killed...they still won

imwithstoopid··on America’s online privacy problems are much bigger than TikTok
I'm more than happy to go through that list, but I suspect I will be downvoted anyway for merely explaining my own beliefs (which is what you are asking for)

- Ukraine - a contrived proxy war and we are very generously and bravely assisting in the avoidable deaths of as many Ukrainians as possible. I'll go even further - neoliberal support in the US is comes from this notion that Trump and Putin are penpals, so if we punch Putin, its like punching Trump

- Middle East Wars - worst geopolitical decision since ww2, probably ruined the US forever

- Vietnam - a massive mistake...and I mean MISTAKE. this was not evil on the US part, but a legit misunderstanding. We mistook a civil war for a Red Wave

- Korea - neutral...but it was the last time we faced off against China militarily and although we massively outgunned them, they probably delivered the single worst military defeat in US history (Chosin Resevoir). By any rational assessment we should have demolished the Chinese, instead they demolished us.

imwithstoopid··on The tug-of-war over server-side WebAssembly
> What do you propose nginx does? Should they embed rust, go, c, visual basic, turbo pascal, nim, and 37 other scripting runtime? Should they pick 3 to support?

no, pick one that is a decent compromise and move on

no one is going to dismiss the entirety of a platform like nginx because they can't script it in their favorite language

imwithstoopid··on The tug-of-war over server-side WebAssembly
> Every time you see a Lua scripting engine (neovim, nginx, a million other places), you could potentially have any langauge you please

but people like code reuse, so its almost always better to communicate, collaborate and share at the source code level than at the level of a compiler target

as far as I can tell, the only real target audience here are pathological language snobs ("I insist on writing neovim extensions in Rust!") who will validate their inflexibility by pointing at the lowest common denominator of wasm

imwithstoopid··on The tug-of-war over server-side WebAssembly
> but isn't server-side wasm basically solving the need for source translation?

hypothetically...but it would also move part of your integration testing into the realm of wasm

I can't think of why this is better than just translating functionality into the language you are using

imwithstoopid··on The tug-of-war over server-side WebAssembly
> for the real goal of of interoperable modules working together

CORBA, Beans etc predate the modern web but its telling that no one has really bothered to try to recreate them...what is the demand? server-side wasm just doesn't seem to be anything that is strongly needed and looks a lot like completists just scratching an itch

two languages that only communicate at the wasm level...isn't this just a variation on "DLL Hell"?

as to a Go program accessing a Rust module...on a practical level you would almost always be better off taking the thing in Rust that you want to use in Go and just doing a best-effort source translation or find some library out there that provides substitute functionality

I'd rather have source translation tech that just gets functionality into the language I am using

here come the "Me Too!!" announcements from everyone trying to catch some of the energy of this new market

how long until IBM, Tesla and Oracle announce Me-Too LLMs?

imwithstoopid··on What Retirement with Less Than $1M Looks Like in America
> So he missed out on one of the best stock market rallies in history

not alone though...every VC who poured $30 million into a cashflow-negative startup eight years ago has also missed out on turning it into $100 million with the click of a mouse

imwithstoopid··on What Retirement with Less Than $1M Looks Like in America
$1 million will be a king's ransom compared to Gen X's retirement plans

last time I checked known stats on Gen X retirement savings, the national average was under $100k...Gen X is the first generation that is almost entirely dependent on 401k

for bonus points, Gen Xers in large cities are more likely renters than owners, so they won't even be able to sell a property to prop up the low 401k balance

the Gen X retirement bailout is probably already unavoidable and will be in the trillions

everyone says its fine because they love what they do and will do it forever...do they really think there will be a hot market for 67 year old React devs?

imwithstoopid··on More Americans are using ‘buy now, pay later’ services to pay for groceries
I don't want people borrowing money to buy corn flakes

I am willing to pitch in to help

that said, why would I not be surprised to find out many of these people have a newer and more expensive phone than me? a nicer car?

sorry for the cynicism but I've watched too many people in the drive-up food bank line in $80k pickups...we have a disconnect here

imwithstoopid··on Law school dean discusses recent protest, outlines next steps
this doubles as a job interview

the Dean is wrong in asserting that the students will need to encompass and address disagreement later in their careers to serve their clients

the students protesting will take up work at places like SPLC where donations from Silicon Valley elites will pay them $1 mln/year to witch hunt Americans

the protest is just job prep

imwithstoopid··on Law school dean discusses recent protest, outlines next steps
I doubt the DEI mob will stand down, this will just embolden them and escalate future confrontations

I see mention of "free speech training"...the school should expect this to turn into a complete circus

countdown until students demand a resignation letter from the Dean also

the tide will turn one day, but the mob is going to go scorched earth first

imwithstoopid··on Ford Says It Will Lose $3B on EVs in 2023
Ford and GM still make their margins off of oversized ICE vehicles

Tesla and Rivian have no choice but to make EVs work or die trying...GM and Ford can and will revert back to their bread and butter of ICE SUVs

this is why I don't believe Ford and GM will ever "transition" to being dominant EV players...they're addicted to ICE profits

imwithstoopid··on Block: Inflated user metrics and “frictionless” fraud facilitation
there are over 400 million firearms in the US in the hands of an estimated 100 million individuals

over two million background checks for firearms purchases are performed each month, and this number is rising, and the number of people who are being background checked for the first time is rapidly rising (fastest growing group - black women)

by 2030 there will likely be a half billion firearms in the US

there are more fully automatic rifles registered to individuals in Texas (40k) than are in possession of many NATO armies...for semi-auto pistols and rifles, Texas residents outgun most NATO armies by a substantial margin

these are stats that both gun advocacy and opposition groups will be happy to validate (each believe the numbers support their position)

anecdotally, it is very common here in Texas to read of traffic altercations in which both parties involved in road rage incidents were carrying in their vehicles...it is widespread

imwithstoopid··on Block: Inflated user metrics and “frictionless” fraud facilitation
> I'm not familiar with this situation, but I'm assuming that whoever is doing this isn't there to "clean" your windshield, and that the entire "transaction" is imbued with the implicit threat of violence

not in the US - millions of people keep loaded guns in their vehicles

imwithstoopid··on GNOME 44

I'm happy that you're happy in Apple's walled garden...but what does this have to do with Gnome?

imwithstoopid··on Indeed cuts 15% of workforce, 2200 jobs
sorry I'm with the parent poster on this one - Indeed was bloated
imwithstoopid··on Indeed cuts 15% of workforce, 2200 jobs
interviewed there once

was confounded by the high headcount, also confounded by the amount of commercial RE they held in Austin

even after these layoffs, their headcount seems curiously high for a listings site
