imjustsaying··on What it’s like to be on the board of a Fortune 500 company
>And when you say board meeting, most people probably think of you taking a corporate jet somewhere, eating a fancy dinner, and showing up to a few CEO meetings before taking the jet back. How accurate is that?

>See Jay, it used to be that way but its changed in the last ten years because the activists [investors] have gotten more involved. It’s a real job. You really have to stay in touch with the company and understand what its doing.

imjustsaying··on One-on-one meetings are underrated, whereas group meetings waste time
>one-on-one meetings

good luck defending against the sexual harassment allegations after that one. i'll stick to group meetings where i won't be risking my career and reputation.

imjustsaying··on Up to 14% of community college students are homeless, new study says
I think you set this up to be knocked out of the park, so I'll oblige:

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says 564,708 people in the U.S. are homeless (2015)

imjustsaying··on Ask HN: What business service would you pay $100/mo for
>unlimited

Am I the only one who's really bothered when telecoms claim unlimited data then intentionally implement artificial limits on every aspect of that data?

imjustsaying··on Despite money and effort, homelessness in SF as bad as ever
> These "rent-seeking" restrictions are a regressive tax transferring income from renters to wealthy landlords including Donald Trump.

Out of the millions of property owners in the US who benefit from artificially propped-up real estate prices, you chose to single out this individual why?

imjustsaying··on If you can’t explain something in simple terms, you don’t understand it
So people who can't teach their own language to foreigners in simple terms don't understand their own language?

I've witnessed dozen of people try and spectacularly fail at teaching their own language.

imjustsaying··on L.A.'s crisis: High rents, low pay, and $2k doesn't buy much
>Why do people want to be landlords over others? Why do you want to live in a world where it is normal to take huge debts, only to hand off the monthly payments to people who are barely treading water?

I'm not saying it's the bank cartel, but it's the bank cartel.

imjustsaying··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
The primary thing universities offer for jobseekers is a demonstration to an employer that a person probably learned contemporary skills in the field of their degree. They also offer licenses to join oligopolies.

They are of course not the fastest way to learn. Learning quickly is a secondary or even tertiary goal. If you want to learn something the fastest, you gotta teach yourself or use a tutor.

imjustsaying··on Ask HN: How can I do social good through programming?
The obsession with doing visible social good comes from a certain part of society, reinforced by academic advisors and admissions criteria as a requirement for advancing into the next academic tier.

Nevermind that by merely participating in a marketplace as a service provider or consumer you're providing a social benefit; that benefit's just not as easy to understand and doesn't get you any vanity points.

But if you're on a mission trip carrying a third world orphan in a microloan-built vaccination tent while on the phone with companies asking for food donations, you're just the most selfless person ever - clearly such charity is just an innate part of who you are.

imjustsaying··on Zillow faces lawsuit over ‘Zestimate’ tool that calculates a house’s worth
A driveby downvote is not a valid argument to the contrary of my claim.
imjustsaying··on Zillow faces lawsuit over ‘Zestimate’ tool that calculates a house’s worth
If an algo could predict real estate prices (all of which are unique and based on instantaneous human preferences) with 100% accuracy, any arbitrary human thought would be known.
imjustsaying··on Macron Campaign Says It Was Target of ‘Massive’ Hacking Attack
The downvote brigade is out in full force here again.

The upvote/downvote forum experiment doesn't work for political topics (which everything has an element of), it just results in censorship of non-status quo opinions.

imjustsaying··on Puerto Rico files for biggest ever U.S. local government bankruptcy
> and what you do with a debt is to you pay it off

No, there is no "you" here. Politicians accrued those debts on something else's bill in exchange for legal bribe schemes.

Nobody owes those debts, legally or morally.

The people and the creditors both were trolled by professional hustlers exploiting the public liability and private benefit design features of socialism.

Democratic leaders, who are human and subject to economic incentives, almost inevitably play the game of trading the future earnings of another administration for the benefit of their own administration.

Government leaders have 130+ IQs[1], the populace has 100 if it's lucky. It's relatively trivial for them to craft a spin to consistently leverage these vulnerabilities.

imjustsaying··on The era of cheap suburban growth and development is over
"plus you're in a city with an international airport hub."

>pays an extra $30,000 a year to live near SFO

>saves $50 on a flight to Asia once a year

rationale checks out

imjustsaying··on Ask HN: How has volunteering helped you grow?
Open source development, editing public wikis, and making useful Youtube videos don't ever seem ever seem to be mentioned or recognized as volunteering, even though its beneficial impacts on society can be much larger per time spent.

Why isn't this form of volunteering recognized or promoted as such? Are the people who trumpet the benefits of volunteering (often teachers, academic administrators) simply behind the times, or is this simply not the kind of volunteering that these kinds of people themselves enjoy?

I am led to believe that it's not just that they're behind the times, but that it can be explained by a personality preference. After all, publishing research papers that provide a public benefit has been around a long time, but this is never mentioned as a form of volunteering.

Is volunteering in the visible social sense simply more tangible and understandable, hence its broader adoption than behind-the-scenes volunteering that can provide a greater benefit? Society's tendency to pressure smart people to undergo visible demonstrations of virtue rather than undertake activities that provide a net greater good has bothered me for a long time.

imjustsaying··on Ask HN: What credit card does your US startup use?
Whoa, I think OP is talking about which corporate credit card to use.

Using a personal credit card of an employee sounds like an absolute nightmare. I know startups are strapped for cash, but damn.

imjustsaying··on Modafinil-Induced Changes in Functional Connectivity of Healthy Elderly Subjects
Loose lips sink ships. Crackdowns are real.

When things like this get talked about outside of their focus spheres, that's when things start getting shut down because the agencies are publicly pressured to do something.

imjustsaying··on Shenzhen is a hothouse of innovation
wake me up when connections to non-Chinese servers (the vast majority of them) don't time out half the time, or connections to neighbors like HK and Singapore don't do crazy routing through Beijing, to America, to HK/Singapore and back instead of directly to HK/Singapore, or numerous key websites aren't outright blocked
