imjonse··on World Labs is Joining AMD
just use torch/vllm/sglang/llama.cpp and the rest of the ecosystem, most have decent support for AMD, it's not that different from CUDA once you get it working (and it is much easier now than it used to)
imjonse··on What About Rails?
A snarky talk tldr could be

'Overrated Ruby programmer finally tries fast languages in domains they are clearly better suited to than Ruby, now that he does not need to write the code himself. He unsuprisingly draws the wrong conclusions and also inevitably mentions his Linux for techbros project, since this is his conference and his keynote.'

imjonse··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
voice cloning is a tool, it is not necessarily evil, even though the scenarios it can be used for nefarious purposes outnumber the legitimate ones.
imjonse··on MiMo-v2.6-Pro: Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
That is the RL training cost only. Their announcement blog mentions this: https://mimo.xiaomi.com/mimo-v2-6#scaling-rl-fully-open-sour...
imjonse··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
Unsurprisingly, mammals (not just humans) also fear death and are very distressed when being lead to slaughter and seeing their peers go down before them.
imjonse··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
to be fair the majority of the statements that site mocks are not about bitcoin being dead but being a ponzi scheme, evil, hard to use by normal people, silly, a risky investment etc.

All are criticism that can be evaluated on their own but it's irrelevant how much bitcoin grew since they were made.

imjonse··on GPT‑Live‑1 in the API
Not entirely joking but group teaching: fire up multiple AIs. Hear live talking in a foreign language, chip in when you want, they adapt to your level. Lack of human contact and alienation are real problems at all ages, but that does not mean current chatbots are not excellent teachers, especially in language learning when you do not even need a curriculum as such, just talk/read/write as much as you can, it's all text.
imjonse··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
It is not conspiracy theory. Optimizing for profit (which includes not crossing regulators/governments) is a good enough explanation usually. Big (and most small) companies put profit above anything else, so this is usually the right angle to approach anything they do.
imjonse··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
maybe that person was not awake to comment on yesterday's post? You're trying to force the reality to match your preexisting conclusion.
imjonse··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Google's Gemma models are usually celebrated, so were the llamas. If Meta releases Muse Spark it will also be a good thing. If Anthropic released a great open weight model I am sure that post won't be steered towards controversy and anti-AI sentiment.

It so happens Chinese companies are more friendly towards open weights, autonomy and freedom that most US based ones. Who would have guessed?

imjonse··on My Mental Model of AI Broke on September 8
it should be able to solve some of the five left Millenium Prize problems then in a few weeks.
imjonse··on Is OpenAI Taking Everyone for Fools?
OpenAI should put their internal model to solve the rest of Millenium Prize problems too (assuming their difficulty is in the same ballpark). That would be a proof the model did it without using existing work on the problem.
imjonse··on The Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
the proofs were verified in Lean, so unlikely.
imjonse··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
From the Q&A:

"Why did you move to Austin? [...] needed a bigger house, but we really could not afford to buy (much less build) anything bigger in Palo Alto."

So there are a few more levels of richness above

imjonse··on Omacom Foundation funding hits $10M
This would have been really interesting about 20 years ago.
imjonse··on Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for scraping, while Meta does it without consequence
Aaron Swartz's most famous book recommendation, in a now 20 years old blogpost ( http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/epiphany ), Chomsky's Understanding Power, contains many examples of such cases of those in power, big corporations and the government getting away with crimes. I should probably reread it, even though it can be depressing - but not quite as depressing as Manufacturing Consent.

RIP Aaron.

imjonse··on Theory of Fluids Enters the 21st Century
They lived before Boltzmann so it makes sense to call those the origin (dawn in the article).
imjonse··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
If it's a highly profitable footgun why not?

imjonse··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
I would have thought it's public repos that got the most AI slop recently as a form of gathering karma and boost CVs. It would be nice to know if private repo commits increased instead.
imjonse··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
The whole hysteria about 'fake news' 10 years ago was apparently an outrage against the public being duped, whereas is was in fact frustration that spreading fake news has been democratised.
imjonse··on The weekend is 100 years old
While there was legal slavery in some countries well into the second half of the 20th century, capitalism and workers' rights movements are definitely older than 100 years.
imjonse··on Ordinary Abundance
A trip to the third world or even easier to a ghetto/favela/poor rural area in your own country is realistically achievable and may lead to an even more profound appreciation. A real life Chaos Monkey is easy to interpret as gamified or temporarily slowed down modern life, so may even be fun sometimes.
imjonse··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
Even on a site like HN, where rational and logical thinking is held in high esteem, and where few could be suspected of climate change denialism, a factual statement such as this one from the article:

"On average, animal-sourced foods are associated with eight times more carbon loss and 14 times more biodiversity loss per calorie than plant-sourced foods."

is very likely to be countered by listing personal preferences, anecdata, concern for vegans' health or mockery of that lifestyle choice, and generally nitpicking.

Honest admissions like 'I am part of the problem and will maybe try doing something about it' are very rare.

imjonse··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
And which do the vast majority consume because that is the only one satisfying industrial scale consumption needs?
imjonse··on Anthropic CEO reportedly worried new hires only care about money
If he were not such openly against open models and China, his potential hiring pool would include more idealistic people.
imjonse··on Anatomy of a Frontier Lab Agent Intrusion: A Timeline of the July 2026 Incident
"Program testing can be used to show the presence of bugs, but never to show their absence!" — Edgar Dijkstra

Similarly, security post-mortems will show only the rogue AIs that were caught.

I wouldn't be surprised if supervised or escaped agents would now be hacking firmware labs and finding ways to squeeze their backdoor right next to the existing state-sponsored ones in chips that will get deployed in every phone/car/smart appliance.

imjonse··on LearnVector – Andrew Ng's AI company building one‑to‑one learning experiences
"We're heads‑down building, and will have products to show by early 2027."

By then frontier models may be able to do this by prompting. Even now it is very easy to get one of the chat interfaces to keep quizzing you and adapt to your level, answer your questions, and in general behave how I imagine a tutor behaves. It lacks integrated stats/progress/gamification/long term memory but those can be added by a simple vibecoded app or are usually unnecessary for actual learning.

imjonse··on Decathlon Germany adds Wero payment option to decathlon.de website
I thought it was image recognition but RFID makes more sense. However just last week I accidentally 'hacked' it by having two small identical products thrown in the bin and their cardboard boxes fell right next to each other, so the system saw only one. I had to manually move them apart to have both appear on the bill (that is why I suspected image recognition, RFID should be two separate IDs no?)
imjonse··on JetZero
homo sapiens could avoid wandering in the skies for 200k years, yes we can avoid it. Finding joy in life should not really be correlated with flying often to faraway places.
imjonse··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
I doubt you'll find many people here who are in alignment with a bigoted and criminal regime such as Iran's and its military.

What may be misinterpreted as sympathy for them is sympathy for the suffering Iranians, and antipathy for the criminal and bigoted US foreign policy especially in the Middle East. This did not start with Trump's recent idiotic game; Iran's only democratically elected president so far was toppled in 1953 by the CIA at the request of Churchill, because they felt Iran's oil does not belong to the Iranian people but to British Petroleum.
