Heart surgeries, joint replacements, kidney failure. Stuff like that. Good for you if you don't end up with those issues... But they are common for a reason. Take a look at your parents/uncle's/aunts and you will have an idea of what your 60s will be like. I'm watching my father and all his siblings have different issues in their 60s and I have suddenly realized that lifestyle can't beat genetics.
I haven't quite figured out what to do with this new realization yet.
Realistic. Everything else sounds like hopium. Sure, let's try and clean up our mess and change our energy sources but looking at how things have been and are going it wouldn't be realistic to think we will solve this or even mitigate it. What else are we going to do though?
I have been working remotely for the past 4 years and every day has been routine. Walk into my my home office at 8, work until 12, take an hour lunch and work until 5. For the first couple of years I had issues with overworking myself not being sure of my productivity, but after setting hard limits to never stay in my office after 5 and to stop worrying about my productivity my stress levels normalized and nobody reported negatively on my productivity. It was all in my head.
My experience working remotely is almost the same as working in an office. My only added benefits are a lack of commute and job opportunities that aren't available to me in the small remote town I'm in. If it wasn't for remote work I wouldn't even be a software developer. This allows me to be a software developer and raise my kids in the same town as their grandparents. In fact living in the same town I was raised in may aid in the social isolation a lot of people feel. I could see working remotely in a town you have no/small amount of friends being very isolating.
This is so not accurate. There is a reason trades people drive trucks and it's not because they look manlier than SUVs. In fact the problem with the Tesla truck is that it looks like it was designed by someone who thinks people buy trucks because of macho aesthetics.
I certainly judge it that way. I can't stand rewatching a movie and I really can't stand watching a movie that is predictable. I beleive this is related to my personality type though. Maybe it's an ADD thing?
We have been using the resources we need. A bunch of rock and magma isn't really useful to us. It's things like soil which only exists on the surface, or oil, which has been getting harder and harder to extract.
It's a hard thing to admit on an anonymous forum but I have never been a great dev. Just good enough to never get fired. Over half the developers I have worked with are more capable than me.
The trick is to get them to think I'm a great dev during the interview stage.
Statistics are useful for understanding a population but not for an individual. Some people get bored without work. I have never felt bored when not working. My grandfathers both worked as professors until they where forced to retire due to Alzheimers. Running marathons and working into their 70s didn't stop their mental decline. Should I focus on the statistics or my genetic history?
Looking at the breakdown it all makes sense, and I don't fault them but at the same time I agree with you and don't think the middle class of the country has ever lived that well.
Vacations that require plane travel twice a year? Going out to concerts and ball games for regular date nights? Life Insurance?
During residency they are dealing with patients dying in front of them. The stress is already there. I don't see why being sleep deprived is a benefit.
Well I know this is anecdotal, and I can't say how widespread this behavior would be, but I'm certain my wife wouldn't let my 5 year old boy put his iPad on display out of embarrassment.
I think it's just the world. Joe Rogan is popular because currently "Joe Rogan Things" are growing (Weed, fitness, nutrition, MMA, psychadelics). These are all trending.
I'm not saying there isn't a correlation with partiers who do lots of drugs and mental illness, but I have watched a lot of people lose their minds across all my social circles.
It seems like a certain percentage of people lose their minds in their early 20s.
Certainly not of corporate culture. People get fired for stuff like that all the time. Johnah Friedland said the n-word and had to step down from Netflix and he didn't even use it in a racist context. He only said the word as he listed offensive words.
Weird sex stuff can certainly be used to affect people in powerful corporate positions.
I have made a few Wordpress sites for customers that required me writing Javascript and PHP code as I learned them for quick features and fixes. In other words, I had to write Javascript and PHP code before I even considered myself a programmer, I basically copy-pasted and edited until it worked.
I imagine that accounts for a lot of bad Javascript and PHP code. By the time I wrote any C++ or Python professionally I had a CS degree and a decade of programing experience.
I don't know how to fix the worlds problems, but I do know that everyone in Europe getting AC isn't going to be the answer to rising temperatures.
In tropical places we deal with heat by having open houses that allow breeze. But I don't know that will work in a place with winter. I offer no solutions but increasing energy consumption across Europe isn't one.
I beleive it's all in your head. I used to feel very self conscious in my CS classes about looking like a meathead, but I can't point to in instance during schooling or career where that feeling was confirmed by someone's actions/words.
My old college roommates and I are purchasing a 4 acre lot. A few of us are ready to put down houses now. I feel like this kind of thing is becoming more common? I know we weren't the first people with this idea. Land and housing is so expensive that we can't all individually own homes, but if we pool money on land this becomes possible. And doesn't everyone want their friends to be their neighbors? We have to develop alternative strategies to make it through the future.
