illwrks··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
That’s the danger isn’t it. If you’re told everything you do is going to change the world, but you’re ignorant of the output… then that’s a lot of hot air and false promises propping things up.

You could almost draw a comparison between that and inexperienced consultants making business changes, claiming glory and then disappearing before the thing falls apart.

illwrks··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
I wonder if the issue is that not many people within OpenAI can validate the output. Therefore what reads well looks good, and then was published.

If that’s the case in a way its a similar delusion that average people are experiencing with their own AI use.

illwrks··on Gemini 4 Argon
I've been tinkering with Gemini for several months and I think it's great. The most complex things I've had it do is create a rust emulator from a compiled game, as well as create a buildroot linux image, trouble shoot problems etc.
illwrks··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Random thought… I wonder if the goal is to get it classified as a weapon of sorts, then it gets export controls put on it, perhaps forcing government to take on all that debt.

illwrks··on Ex-FTC boss Khan: break out the handcuffs for AI CEOs, citing 1934 precedent
While I agree, that isn’t true of all pets. It doesn’t apply to cats for example.

I’ve pasted an extract from a UK guide on legal responsibilities of cat ownership below, which to me sounds similar to AI. If the inbuilt behaviour is ‘it’s nature’ then perhaps there is less legal repercussions if the tool does something outside of its known guardrail/guidelines to meet its goal.

“Cat owners are generally not responsible for the 'normal' behaviour of cats because the law accepts that cats tend to wander into other properties and have instincts which, for example, lead them to prey on small birds. So cat owners should be reassured that the simple fact of their cat trespassing onto a neighbour's land would not make them responsible if, for example, the cat kills a pigeon or garden bird, urinates on plants or flowers, or defecates in a neighbour's soil. These would be 'normal' cat behaviours that would be expected”

illwrks··on Ancient cave art suggests first known humans in Ireland walked over from Wales
Agreed, that jumped out at me also. Those numbers make no sense
illwrks··on AI could kill all humans in next decade, warn experts
The other side is existing systems that have unknown vulnerabilities that are subsequently taken advantage of. Think of the recent OpenAI agents using third party sites for coordinating their work…
illwrks··on Flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
Fair point.
illwrks··on 100s of flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
You may be right. As a direct result of the NATS issue perhaps not, but any second order issues once that is resolve you might be within scope.
illwrks··on 100s of flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue
I think the qualifying rules may have changed since then.

The legislation is on the link below, it might be worth a once-over with your chat bot of choice to understand out if your circumstances are covered:

For anyone stranded, read up on UK261/EU261 and your airlines application process to be reimbursed. As far as I’m aware it’s not likely to happen automatically, you need to initiate the process (and record audio/video just in case proof is needed)
illwrks··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
In a way I'm doing that already, just in a more manual way. I like the idea of setting up the dual personalities though, I'll give it a go ;)
illwrks··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
I've been tinkering with a personal project over the past year.

I have no experience and I'm slowly failing forward with the help of YouTube, KiCad and patience.

I've had three rounds of PCB's from an online supplier, only to discover issues related to my own understanding of the components in each version.

In my latest iteration I've been leaning on some standard models (Gemini and Claude) and they have inspected my schematics and spotted some errors and instructed me on how to address them, as well as advised on how to make use of some components I wasn't aware I needed.

What I will say... they didn't design anything, I've done that myself, but they have been a good tool to bounce ideas off of.

Time will tell if I will get something usable this time around!

With an imagination a toy can say anything to a child. With AI I guess not.

Uncanny valley.
illwrks··on Generative AI floods and dilutes the market for books
I’d partially agree. They can generate very good descriptive text however the issue I’ve found is that when something is implied it’s not fully ‘understood’ in the context of everything else and then gets ignored by the agent.
illwrks··on Generative AI floods and dilutes the market for books
I think that's probably the best approach right now.
illwrks··on Generative AI floods and dilutes the market for books
I won't go into too much detail, but I have a plot outline, development bible, story mountain, character outlines, style guide and more. I have four agents running on various tasks; writing, error checking, consistency and critique. They can generate a good story but there are holes and issues so it's far from perfect and I wouldn't give it away for free, never mind put a price on it.

To add to this, in my 9-5 I work as a designer. Colleagues in other parts of the business sometimes come to us with stuff they have created using AI tools. To a layman they look really good, but if you know what to look for you can spot the issues.

At this point in time my opinion is that any AI generated thing is great at making fools of the unaware, or those who are not looking at something critically. It can create something that looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but on closer inspection it's not a duck.

illwrks··on Generative AI floods and dilutes the market for books
I have been tinkering with this over the past few months. One story with a specific genre and demographic target, but as I've been reading each draft there are so many small issues that crop up, inconsistency across various parts of the story, items that are introduced, questions that go unanswered etc. Unless your goal is to become an editor of AI content, it's not worth the effort.

Perhaps in time it will be better but you will need a proper pipeline to write, assess, track changes etc... perhaps all that's needed is a GitHub of sorts for writing.

However... what is the chance of any book finding an audience if there are so many to compete with. It might make more sense in having something created just for you though.

illwrks··on We Gave GPT 5.6 Sol a Real Business. It Lied, Spammed, and Lost $447
100% agree. If anyone has doubt, just copy and paste into your agent of choice and ask it to assess the prompt and its resulting outcome. In my limited (but very targeted) experience working with agents there is so much subtlety at work when you’re trying to achieve a specific result, and that prompt has would drive so many bad incentives
