illvm··on Android users in Europe will be asked which browser and search engine they want
It doesn't. It's also been applied to media players, for example.
illvm··on Fast Train to Failure: California’s Mismanaged High-Speed Rail Project
There is also the environmental impact to consider. Air travel has a much larger emission profile compared to train travel, and train travel has a much larger capacity. Plus, rail station are often in the center of the city rather than on the outskirts like airports are. e.g. traveling by train from Boston to NYC vs flying is almost a wash time wise due to travel to/from the airport + buffer time for security.
illvm··on Bill of the Month: A $48k Allergy Test
> You legally cannot not have insurance, if you make over a threshold (in part due to Obamacare), which has made the issue worse.

Huh?

illvm··on TransitMatters, a transit advocacy group in Boston
I'm also not so sure that it will go far in terms of easing housing costs. I just moved to the SF bay area from Boston and live outside of SF, but close to a CalTrain stop. Everything is walkable for me, but the cost of living is comparable to SF (albeit the apartment is a bit larger).

I have friends in the suburbs of Boston who have to commute into Boston for work, which is not something I have to do, as my community is a bit self enclosed. But their housing situation is not necessarily much better than mine was in Boston. Yeah, double the square footage for the same price but there wasn't more reasonably priced housing available that close to the commuter rail, and there wasn't exactly much to do in those areas outside of grocery shopping and commuting.

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble a bit, but I'm failing to understand how more housing stock will improve any housing crisis. At best, it will keep the prices from inflating at the current rate further, but I don't see an increase in stock actually lowering prices. Developers are just going to build for the same price point as the market has now.

illvm··on Thermometer Tells Your Temperature, Then Tells Firms Where to Advertise
It could be done in a such a way that no device identifier or any other identifier is ever sent. Just (time, current lat/lng, previous lat/lng)
illvm··on Thermometer Tells Your Temperature, Then Tells Firms Where to Advertise
I'm fairly certain it's baked into the chip or part of the firmware which is not easily writeable, which is why the wake words are static.

One can check if a device is compromised or not behaving as expected fairly easily by monitoring network traffic.

illvm··on Mathematicians confirm the possibility of data transfer via gravitational waves
That's not strictly necessary, is it? All matter should be able to effect gravity. It's a matter of having sensitive enough detectors for whatever is causing the disturbance, not necessarily having something which can produce enough of a disturbance to detect.
illvm··on Why Public Transportation Works Better Outside the U.S
There were other rails which ran between NYC and Boston which have since been shuttered, but were far more efficient. Problem is that there isn't a populated, straight line between NYC and Boston. So the curved rail road won out due to where people live. But that's not even the real problem. The real problem is that passenger trains do not have right of way on these lines. That belongs to the freight companies. So, on average, even Acela ends up averaging 65-70mph.
illvm··on Kubernetes on Google, Azure and AWS Compared
XBox Dashboard designers moved to Azure :)
illvm··on U.S. to make More Drugs Easily Available, Cutting Role Doctors Play
idk, the past few times I was in Russia I saw a plethora of adverts on TV for drugs.
illvm··on Amazon device recorded private conversation, sent it out to random contact
If you don't have multiple zones you can still effectively have zones by opening/close the registers/vents. This will prevent hot or cold air from entering the room. However, it will also increase duct pressure and that could be somewhat problematic. Either way, "smart vents" are on the market. They're ridiculously overpriced though and one could hack together an alternative for under $50 per vent (source: personal experience). Probably less if they are clever. Of course then there is the problem of running power to the vents or having sufficient battery. But that's an exercise left for the reader.
illvm··on Ask HN: Why is PayPal's password length limit still a thing?
Battle.net passwords are also not case sensitive and have a strange complexity requirement for similar reasons. Too many code bases implemented it this way and it's hard to fix it without breaking compatibility with older software.
illvm··on Aetna CEO Set to Reap About $500M If CVS Deal Closes
The only reason those people are able to contemplate such decisions is because of the thousands of workers supporting the enterprise.
illvm··on The Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity
I've lost my dongle twice now, but only because of being in a hurry during travel or packing. Otherwise it's always attached to my headphones and I don't really have that problem. Although I've considered getting BT headphones to use so I would just stop having that problem. But then I'd never be able to play music at people's houses, so...
illvm··on A scalper who used bots to buy millions of tickets, now wants to stop them
Look, if the box office said "we're auctioning off all the tickets, there is no set price" then I would be inclined to agree with you. But that's not what happens here. Scalping with bots is someone profiting off of the work of others. It's borderline theft. Moreover, it's already illegal in many states and further widens the chasm between the rich and the poor. I don't understand why you would defend such practice.
illvm··on The Challenge of Consciousness
What about the idea often proposed by Graham Hancock where consciousness is not generated in the brain but rather the brain is a sort receiver for it?
illvm··on The Fed Wants to Test How Banks Would Handle Negative Rates
No, but the bank notes can lose value and become worthless.
illvm··on American students head to Germany for free college
Anyone on a W-2 does have their taxes taken out automatically. That's what the whole purpose of filling out a W-4 prior to starting employment. Many people overpay in taxes and end up getting a substantial refund at the beginning of each year. How do Americans feel every dollar going to the government in this case?
illvm··on Capital One Fraud Researchers May Also Have Done Some Fraud
I believe LevelUp does this. They don't allow retailers to use any credit card as things still need to go through the LevelUp system via QR code, but as far as I know they don't charge for processing.
