ilinx··on The vocal effects of Daft Punk
I mean, they’re retired, and I’m not holding out hope. But it’s remarkable that 30 years after their debut Daft Punk could put out an album and probably be as innovative and relevant as ever. That’s such a rare quality.
ilinx··on Polish city is using mussels to monitor water quality (2020)
Presumably the consensus of a number of chickens could be more consistent than one person (who could get sick or forget).
ilinx··on Nvidia (NVDA) to Replace Intel in the Dow Jones Industrial Average
> Another Z is all you need paper means my old laptop is running models fast or something means groq is not something you need.

I’m having trouble parsing that sentence. Is it missing some punctuation?

ilinx··on Benjamin Thorpe translated almost all Old English texts (2016)
Wouldn’t that vary from person to person? I have several medications that I objectively need in order to remain healthy. The cost of those would be prohibitively expensive without a good job and/or health insurance.
ilinx··on Yes, you can play Duck Hunt without a television (but I can't)
I remember getting charged $3 every time I returned a rented game without the manual.
ilinx··on Popular Mac app 'Bartender' acquired by new unknown developer
I’ve been using it for years! It’s a wonderful app.
ilinx··on Apple and Google deliver support for unwanted tracking alerts in iOS and Android
I write apps for a large regional grocery store chain, and we have to support N-2. Even then we get support emails every time we bump it up.
ilinx··on US opens probe into 130k Ford vehicles over hands-free tech
Honestly we’ll probably just figure out how much a football field costs and use that.
ilinx··on NYC Rat Sightings (Daily)
He recently did a show in my city. Before the show he visited the art museum where my wife works as a curator. He spent a good amount of time chatting with the staff, and then mentioned how nice the museum was during his show that night.

Completely unrelated, but it was fairly recent and I found it super charming. He’s always been one of those celebrities I want to like.

ilinx··on Arlington's first guaranteed income pilot boosted QoL for poorest residents
> ACF says the extra cash gave participants breathing room to make investments that could improve their job prospects.

Earlier on it also mentions that they were able to get car repairs and find better jobs. I would assume that means that the $440 is in addition to the $500 they were given.

ilinx··on How Lego Became the Apple of Toys (2015)
“The new sets are more complex and detailed, but god do I hate the franchised sets. Nothing kills kids creativity more than that.”

I haven’t noticed this with my son, fortunately. What I have noticed is that franchised characters immediately detach from their property when they enter his LEGO world. Lately I think Chewbacca has been dating an elderly woman, and every time Luke Skywalker talks about the rebellion his hair falls off. We have a Porg that runs a food delivery service with a Goomba and Harry Potter. I played in a similar way when I was a kid. I think in many cases the characters can be jumping off points, but a lot of kids take plenty of liberties from there.

ilinx··on AWS charge for using IPv4 expected to bring $1B/year and speed up IPv6 adoption
That’s great to know. I’m literally watching them install in my neighborhood as I type this.
ilinx··on Ask HN: How is/was your job search this year?
Sorry for the late reply, I’m from the US.
ilinx··on Why Bill Watterson Vanished
The world has doctors. You chose a path that added your unique voice to the artistic chorus of our species. I’d almost guarantee that the effects of your work have rippled out there in unknowable ways. Very few artists ever get the chance to see exactly how their work has influenced the world, but pay attention to how the illustrations you see around you impact you. Which ones do you remember from childhood? Even things like logos and magazine covers can have deep personal meaning that anchors people to their humanity.
ilinx··on Ask HN: How is/was your job search this year?
I’m a full-stack/mobile developer who was laid off in June. Within two weeks I had another offer, which I turned down. A couple weeks later I found a fantastic job that I was very qualified for, which paid about 60% more than the job I lost. Throughout the whole process, I didn’t get turned down once during an interview. I used to be horrible at interviews, especially technical ones, but I seem to have gotten better.

I’m currently having a great time at my new position, which seems much more stable and comes with a much better compensation package (including being fully remote). My new employer is much larger, and there’s a lot of room to grow in this role. I really couldn’t be happier with how things went.

ilinx··on Cruise told by CA DMV to reduce robotaxi fleet 50% following crash
There are reckless people in software development, and there are reckless people in the automotive world. Any industry is going to have people who cut corners to be early to a new market.

I’m a software developer, and being asked to test in prod is a massive red flag. It’s almost always prompted by someone with fairly little technical background.

ilinx··on The working-from-home debate gets old
My manager protects me from meetings and gets me the things I need.

I like my manager.

ilinx··on Life on Earth didn’t arise as described in textbooks
I came here from that event, but I’m your stereotypical left-wing atheist redditor. I guess the site is pretty heavily sectioned off, but I assumed that was the bulk of us.

Editing to add: this site has been so much better for my mental health. Still plenty of bad news about the environment and large corporations, etc. but I focus less on it, and much more on topics that rekindle my passion for science and technology.

ilinx··on Apple forced to make major cuts to Vision Pro headset production plans
Could you provide an example of the sort of thing you’re talking about? Because I’m the type of person the other commenter was talking about (I’ve been in the Apple ecosystem for a very long time), and I feel I’m too close to it to have a reasonably objective viewpoint on it one way or the other.
ilinx··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
I came here from Apollo today. I think I’ll be happier having a news feed without all the ridiculous stuff. Hopefully the community is decent.

Edit: I will genuinely miss Apollo, but it was what made reddit useable for me. It was one of those rare pieces of software that was so elegant that at a first glance you would assume it was only a few hundred lines of code. That kind of elegance is rare and beautiful. It belongs in some sort of software hall of fame.
