ilconsigliere··on Ask HN: How do you sync your computer’s development configurations/environment?
I stole/copied my setup from Nick Janetakis who's just great all around. Its worked for me through several new systems and many updates.

Description is so vague. Pledge for wat? Then by pledging I'm also agreeing to a ToS?

No thanks

ilconsigliere··on Ask HN: How Many of Prefer Social Media Sign Up Over Regular Sign Up?
I'll go to great lengths to avoid social sign ups. I want nothing linked to those accounts. It mostly comes from distrust of app behavior. I don't want any app blasting anything to my entire contact lists. This might be an irrational concern but its real. I'll use Google account to sign up for any service BC I know Google won't let an app run wild w my contacts. Other services I am not so confident
ilconsigliere··on CVE-2014-6271: Remote code execution through bash
It will be once they release a patch, yes

ilconsigliere··on CVE-2014-6271: Remote code execution through bash
Makes sense. This just strikes me as a very flexible exploit.

ilconsigliere··on What Readers Found in Facebook’s ‘Other’ Folder
From the article:

"Several readers wanted to know how they could access the Other folder on their phones or tablets.

The answer: you can’t. The Facebook apps don’t permit you to see the Other folder. (You can, of course, go to www.facebook.com in your phone or tablet’s Web browser — don’t use the app — to work on the Other folder there.)"

You can on Android: hit the gear symbol next to the 'Messages' menu option in the Facebook app menu

Did you build that Wordpress theme on Starkers? I love it!
ilconsigliere··on Matasano Security acquired for £8.4m ($13m) - Congrats tptacek
I'm really enjoying the "How to Break into Security" posts you linked to.

The infosec (specifically, appsec) space seems very very interesting.

ilconsigliere··on Ask HN: Which podcasts do you listen to?
I have to recommend The History of Rome podcast anytime I have an opportunity. Mike Duncan does a great job "storytelling" the history, and is very up front about what should be accepted as relative fact (strong sources) vs. the more uncertain elements from the more questionable sources. It's great if you're driving a lot.

ilconsigliere··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2011
Fair question. After initially seeing Sansa represented this way, I began to ask myself "Why would they do this? What advantage does it serve?"

Using the common motive of "making the show appeal to a wider [American] audience," it seemed to me that they wanted her character to hit closer to home than a polished young lady would. Of course, my opinion is just a shallow one - a thought in passing.

Thinking on it now you are probably right to question me on my association of 'rude and spoiled' with 'American,' but that was just my gut reaction. FWIW, I'm an American with minimal knowledge of the demeanor teenage girls from other societies, Western or otherwise.

ilconsigliere··on [dead]
I think it's entirely appropriate to determine that you do not want to have a _terrible_ business person occupying an official booth, as long as that determination is based on decisions and actions that person made in a business setting. Particularly a business setting that is in your industry or very close to home.

It's not "one bad email," it is a series of emails demonstrating a pattern of ridiculous and entirely unacceptable behavior. Behavior that is unbecoming of any businessperson, and not someone I personally would associate myself with if possible.

ilconsigliere··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2011
My only major inaccuracy is re: Sansa Stark. I found her to be a well-intentioned yet manipulated and confused child in the books. She just wants to be a quintessential 'Lady' - courteous, artful, etc.

In the show they made her out to be... American. Rude, spoiled, etc. Other than that I just wish they had the time and the audience to tell the FULL story in all it's glory. Of course it's expected that the sub-plots have to be trimmed of the minutiae, but the complexity and ambiguity is part of what makes ASoIaF so amazing.

ilconsigliere··on Ask HN: Friends and I are hacking this weekend. What should we build?
How about a simple app that: 1) prompts for a word 2) returns X number of definitions (fetched from somewhere?) in a cleanly formatted manner 3) stores these definitions under your account history in a sort-able list (chronologically, part-of-speech, etc.)

Basically, a definition-fetching app that stores the definitions in a clean and aesthetic manner.

I tried making this as my first web app using the Google Dictionary API, but they disabled it just as I had something going in Flask. I keep trying to get back to making it but I've got so much to learn. Maybe I should just...... FIND A WAY. OR MAKE ONE???

I'd use it everyday, especially if it was a browser addon :)

ilconsigliere··on Does HN have an open source code?
Here is some background on the status of the code (from about a year ago) - http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1833010

Here's a brief explanation of how to get it up and running - https://github.com/nex3/arc/blob/master/how-to-run-news

I had arc.news up and running a few months ago. The code is quite outdated but has all the essentials to get your own HN site. Truthfully, it'd be very nice so get a crack at some more recent code.

Personally, I'd love to use arc.news to run a closed news aggregator/discussion site for a close group of friends.

ilconsigliere··on Sony: All personal data stolen from PSN
Sony yanked linux support from PS3s after thousands of users had already paid for it. Tally that in the "Reasons to no longer support Sony" column.
ilconsigliere··on Make your own feed reader with NewsBlur's new API
I would become a regular [premium] user if the application worked well with Arc90's Readability. I use Chrome w/ Readability Redux. Any suggestions as to how to use both Newsblur and Readability together would have me sold.

Great app nonetheless!
