ilcesco··on Kwangmyong, the North-Korea-Wide-Web
Regardless my absolute disgust for any sort of censorship, I must admit that it would be quite interesting to look, through a sociologist-like point of view, how a whole nation has developed (or not developed) without any string attached to the rest of the world, to know what the people there are thinking and what's their idea of the rest of the world. Too bad it's almost impossible to get there and roam around for a western citizen.

Here's a great photo essay for anyone else fascinated by this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mytripsmypics/sets/721576048127...

and here some other travel journals: http://www.blogjam.com/north-korea/

ilcesco··on Ask HN: Are dedicated servers a better deal than VPS/Cloud options?
While a VPS or a Cloud solution may provide you greater flexibility for the reasons explained by pedoh, in my personal experience dedicated servers are better served in terms of bandwidth and throughput stability. At the current state-of-the-art however, I'd choose VPS over dedicated anytime (as long as it's cheaper).
ilcesco··on Google Adds A Background Image To Its Homepage
Even if this 'bingoogle' thing is lasting one day only, not having the chance to turn it off is quite annoying, actually.
ilcesco··on Vector icons with Raphaël
To be honest, I'm a bit more impressed by the flash-like capabilities of raphael.js rather than the icon set itself. It's great stuff. http://raphaeljs.com/
ilcesco··on Ask HN: What simple items have you found to be amazingly handy or practical?
The moleskine notebook
ilcesco··on [dead]
Carbon-14? /jk
ilcesco··on The Value of Ideas
I might be a rampant first-time entrepreneur wannabe, but I still believe ideas have a little value. I'd rather say: Bad ideas are worthless, great execution makes the difference.
ilcesco··on Poll: What is HN made of?
In daylight, consultant/business analyst at major IT company, during the night, I put togheter jquery, css, rails, perl scripting, dedicated servers and obscure new stuff to build my contribution of innovation to the human society.
ilcesco··on My Dip Into Domaining
It's pretty much like buying land. It's not like it's unethical to buy land if you have no plans of building an house on it, imho.
ilcesco··on How HTML 5 link prefetching can make your site load faster with one line of code
Good point, it wouldn't affect javascript based stats, but it's surely going to mess up with webserver log-based analytics such as webalizer, awffull etc..
ilcesco··on A different kind of calculator
I'm not interest whether or not this is a copy of something already in place, it looks like a neat little app. Anyway, honestly, the 'buy - go to the store' button at the end of the page was a bit unexpected..
ilcesco··on Marc Andreessen - Three Necessities for Start-up Success [video]
I've just watched the whole thing. Thanks a lot to whoever posted it, that was really interesting.
ilcesco··on Twitter is not censoring flotilla.
Even if I agree with you mindcreek here, if possible, I'd invite anyone to keep political discussions out of HN. This just isn't the right venue imho.
ilcesco··on Ask HN: What recommendations do you have for ad networks?
For a number of reasons, adsense seems to be the only viable option nowadays. Smaller providers aren't just as reliable and in-context.
ilcesco··on Go To University, Not For CS
It makes sense, I've studied 'IT engineering' here in Italy, and we can also get the best of both worlds. The sad thing is that as an engineer you'll be always labeled as a technical person, and somehow not competent when it comes to crucial functional decisions, especially when you end up working for a big corporate, where business analysts are more likely to be former MBAs..
ilcesco··on China Rips Off The iPad With The iPed
You'd be amazed by how little it takes to motivate someone.
ilcesco··on More Workers Start to Quit
I'm an underpaid massive corporate's cog, dealing with stuff I have no interest in. That's why I'm gonna quit and start something on my own.
ilcesco··on Venture Capitalists, who are these freaks?
VCs are good to share risks and gain economic stability while building something on your own. I wouldn't drop out my day job to sink into a project and risk all my money, I must be backed in order to start. What you need is experienced, advising, business savvy VCs. They're a necessity, not Freaks. The article is bogus.
ilcesco··on There are many upcoming HTML 5 books for this summer, which one is best?
Mark Pilgrim's site http://diveintohtml5.org/ is the best resource I've found on the subject. Once you have an overview of all the new features, you might just want to read some examples and start playing with them, at least this is my approach (I'm not a big fan of programming books, can you tell?).
ilcesco··on Ask HN: "Startup Weekend" experiences?
Hi David, I'll be there too. I also believe you can't really get something up and running in 2 days, but when I found out about this few days ago, it sounded fun and I mindlessly subscribed. The Venice event will be hosted at H-Farm, a very rare example of italian private VC/incubator, so it might even be a decent launchpad. I'm Francesco, a software engineer from Verona, hope to see you there!
