ilaksh··on Coding Is Not Solved
Those are embarrassing bugs, but they don't prove that LLMs of that time couldn't be effective overall, and they don't mean that the latest LLMs aren't generally very good at coding.
ilaksh··on Coding is not solved
Is that the fault of AI or management for not firing them?
ilaksh··on Z80 REPL (2018)
Is there screen memory or anything? How do I output a character?
ilaksh··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
I am very pro-AI (although I do think we need to have a culture of caution) but this is another red-alert for democracy. People should be terrified if the president is able to make you into a state enemy just because you said you are against some technology.
ilaksh··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
Right or anyone who says they are anti-fascist.
ilaksh··on Meta VR Glasses
It's not a headset, it's glasses.
ilaksh··on Stripe's Knowledge AI Platform
Maybe they have jobs to do so they offloaded a lot of the presentation work to AI, assuming reasonable people would not judge based on surface level copy style.
ilaksh··on Claude Opus 5.5
With the frequency of model releases, pelicans seem to have become a part-time job for you. But unpaid :/
ilaksh··on MiMo v2.6
Because they can brag about the cost effectiveness.
ilaksh··on MiMo v2.6
I think we are talking about the medium term for China to pull ahead. They just released a new domestic AI chip which seems in important ways to have caught up to Nvidias previous generation. They have a LOT more manufacturing capacity. They are collaborating via open source by default. They have better materials access and much more energy capacity. They have many more people overall and more researchers.

There is a strong chance most of the researchers are pulled out of the US and Europe if WWIII really kicks off or even if there is just more global crisis and concern.

One other thing about the power needs. Within a few years, the power efficiency of AI chips is likely to improve by a factor of 20, 50 or more times by switching to true compute-in-memory architecture with new materials that have made rapid progress lately.

ilaksh··on Show HN: Mini-AGI – Dynamic continual learning model trained on 8GB VRAM
I would be okay if you shared it as a potential idea and possibly interesting early result, but the language you are actually using to characterize it is misleading or delusional.

Please get a model to the point where it seems like it has some natural language understanding and then share again with reasonable characterization.

ilaksh··on Show HN: Mini-AGI – Dynamic continual learning model trained on 8GB VRAM
You can't claim it "works" if it hasn't produced any coherent responses and is still early in your first training attempt.
ilaksh··on Show HN: Mini-AGI – Dynamic continual learning model trained on 8GB VRAM
Actually I'm mad that I wasted my time looking at it based on the claims. He implies it is trained and uses the term "AGI" and "continuous learning". He never finished a single training run or enough that he considers not "undertrained". It's not trained. And actually there is no evidence that it can actually learn anything useful.
ilaksh··on Show HN: Mini-AGI – Dynamic continual learning model trained on 8GB VRAM
If you actually scroll through the transcript he links to, you will see that something that looks like it could be training is happening, but no coherent responses are coming out at any point. At least not that I saw skimming through.

That might explain why there are no benchmarks of any kind.

ilaksh··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
OpenAI just released the new full duplex mode to the API as gpt-live-1 or something like that. Very realistic.
ilaksh··on A 386 PC for Your RP2350
yeah but for 386?
ilaksh··on A 386 PC for Your RP2350
yeah but the PSRAM is going to cause a delay
ilaksh··on A 386 PC for Your RP2350
I don't know if they have some kind of magically genius caching system but the chip only has 512kb of SRAM and a little cache and the rest has to be managed by flash memory which is like 30+ times slower so I dunno about the performance of that.
ilaksh··on A 386 PC for Your RP2350
The problem is PC programs assume 640kb of RAM and the RP2350 has 512kb + 16kb cache SRAM so anything that goes past that has a sudden 40 cycle access delay.

So even if you account for the RP2350 being 6 times faster than the RP2350, I think the emulation would randomly start to stutter a lot in certain circumstances waiting to access that part of the memory.

ilaksh··on The Interim Computer Museum
Click on the Recollections page, it has a bunch of real vintage Unix (etc.) computers you can log into.
ilaksh··on Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
Just pretending that AI doesn't exist or doesn't matter is one way to go.

I think we might be getting close to an era where some people section off areas of land or the internet and ban AI and humanoid robots in that area. I know there are a lot of people who want that.

The problem is that AI is getting better and better at impersonating humans.

Eventually you may see a convergence, where the New Luddite Zoos are just more constrained variations of the normal Human Zoos. Enforced by superhuman AI.

ilaksh··on Hacker News with reduced priority for AI driven content
Maybe check out Mastodon, Matrix, (new) Freenet, etc.
ilaksh··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
1. Popularity != Merit and this site is not different. A lot of worthy posts get ignored.

2. Even though I find most of the AI posts interesting, I agree that tags and the ability to filter by tags would be really great. But it's probably a ton of work and additional system load.

I don't have a

ilaksh··on Douglas Hofstadter: Analogy as the Core of Cognition [video]
He was extremely skeptical of the capabilities of AI for years but eventually came around to calling it truly capable after testing advanced LLMs.

He is still an AI skeptic in as many ways that he can reasonably be, but doesn't deny the raw ability. Actually he thinks it will eclipse humans and he is a doomer.

He sees it as being an extremely empty type of intelligence though.

But I hope that people who have an intuitive understanding of contemporary machine learning (not me) will sometimes watch videos like this and think about things at a higher level. LLMs have a LOT of assumptions built in.

ilaksh··on AMD unveils Threadripper Halo Station, an AI workstation packing 96 cores
Try Qwen 3.8 27b or the antirez ds4 0731 quants

Can run on MacBook m5 or new m5 studio or m5 studio ultra or rtx 6000 pro.

ilaksh··on AMD unveils Threadripper Halo Station, an AI workstation packing 96 cores
It's over $100k.
ilaksh··on The true horror of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories lies in their confessions
This is really interesting and a fun read, but the way they mix in dated psychology around this historical figure in a serious way without much reference to subsequent work adds up to pretension.
ilaksh··on Pentagon rescinds new testosterone screening policy without explanation
They're not weird at all given his worldview. It's Nazism. From his book to his public statements and actions, he consistently expresses this. The only thing he does not do is use the literal language that is not accepted. But the meaning and actions are the same. People are in denial.
ilaksh··on GPT-6 Astra
peeling an orange and cracking an egg already demonstrated. Figure 02 worked on BMW's actual Spartanburg production line for about 1,250 hours running 10-hour shifts.

keep paying attention, you will see how wrong you are about it being physical limitations as the physical AI continues to rapidly improve.

ilaksh··on GPT-6 Astra
What task do you think that humanoid robots can't do? Also, we don't need fully equivalent touch to get useful performance.

If you look you will see a really broad range of tasks accomplished already, including thing like manipulating screws, picking up pills, inserting wire harnesses, folding clothes, putting away dishes. And there are several companies with built in or component advanced touch sensors like Figure or leading edge touch sensor companies like SynTouch and GelSight.
