iknowverylittle··on Facebook stock drops more than 20% after revenue forecast misses
Well you can give me your second billion after you make your first.

That said, I don't know how you would monetize a system like that.

Furthermore would you really want to? Seems to me part of Facebook's (and other popular social media platforms) growth is attracting advertisers with access to user data personalization.

Consequencently this set up leads to people (at least geeks/nerds) boycotting or giving up on Facebook due to information mining and obnoxious advertising.

Then those aforementioned nerds/geeks make something new that begins the cycle over again.

>I want a social network that encourages human interaction in the real world - not one that turns friends into enemies, feeds narcissism, and provides a platform for corporations and hostile governments to spy on us and manipulate us.

Well this is a site for startups. It seems like you have a good initial idea/problem and/or need. Now the next hard part is concieving and implementing a solution.

There's peer-to-peer networks already though I doubt any of them will be a Facebook replacement. It does provide a solution in part to the spying and data mining (obviously whatever you decide to put out there is free to be harvested).

So how do you encourage human interaction, perhaps meeting, and build constructive discussions?

Unfortunately I'm afraid some of that might just be choosing to predominantly interact with people that are also like that. Although a technologal solution would still be valuable.

I'm pretty sure that declaration was sent 2 years ago. Although perhaps it's more a continuation of the previous cold war and we're just starting to see what they've been working on for the last 10-20 years in the news now.

Politics aside, I'm worried that sometime in the near future we'll begin seeing bigger hacks or series of hacks that will be part of this centuries big events like the Great Depression and the World Wars were for the last.

iknowverylittle··on Intel patches new ME vulnerabilities
You know the shame of ME is that the concept and intended use isn't terrible and the engineering behind it is rather cool. It is however unfortunate how poorly Intel implemented it and essentially forced it onto personal systems that have no need for it to begin with.

So, what's AMD doing these days?

I'm hesitant to switch to AMD since Intel internal graphics play nicely with Linux. However that kind of doesn't matter if my machine isn't mine.

That's awful.

I don't want come across as trying to convert or be rude, but what does Windows provide, both home users and businesses, that open source operating systems are unable to do?

As someone just kind of starting out, is Windows promising for future career building?

I understand backwards compatibly and larger selection of games, and that hardware manufacturers will provide software.

>CVE-2018-3628, Intel says that exploitation is possible only from the same subnet

So if I understand correctly, at the moment, these CPUs are vulnerable on a local network but not currently over the internet?

Fortunately then various groups have already been working to remove and nullify as much of ME as possible.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh, but when the Forbes article author was complaining about a random unplanned forced update I thought surely the guy just didn't bother to change the default settings.

Now I've come to your comment and am now realizing that apparently there is no built in functionality to prevent forced update/reboots (while connected to the internet) in Windows 10.

I not crazy anti-Microsoft, but that's absurd and honestly aside from gaming (which I don't have a gaming PC anyways) I miss nothing from Windows.

I see comments about Linux on random laptops, I've only have had good experiences with it generally. I'm not a power user. I've run at least one distro or another on a random cheap netbook, a 2005-08 Sony laptop, a low end and higher end Lenovo laptops, and honestly other than the one I'm on right now I've not had the problems people talk about it (something related to the CPU was crashing the system, found a solution online and everything is good now). Maybe I'm just lucky.

There's also phage therapy:

Which is using viruses to kill bacteria.

Also I imagine that gene editing might also become a tool in combating infections in the near future.

iknowverylittle··on PeerTube, the “Decentralized YouTube”, succeeds in crowdfunding
Thank you!

This is all new to me, so I don't know how it works. However, this does resolve my concern about 'instances'.

It makes me excited and hopeful then that Peertube could become something pretty great.

>There's a large section of creators, such as Blender, Education (think OpenCourseWare / MIT), Linux Conference publishers who will benefit from PeerTube.

That's what I'm hoping for. Educational and instructional videos are my main use for YouTube, YT happens to be where they are hosted, I care very little about anything else related to the site so for me PeerTube could potentially be perfect for my use.

iknowverylittle··on PeerTube, the “Decentralized YouTube”, succeeds in crowdfunding
I'm not sure that 'decentralized' in this case means decentralized in community.

I understand it more as decentralized hosting since it's P2P.

Now, peertube does state something about 'instances', so that might separate content from one accessable website. I don't know.

YouTube's big point initially was video hosting was expensive and YouTube made it cheap (for creators).

It is also is a centralized community so you can find a video on virtually any subject just from the search on the homepage. If peertube is able to do this in a similar fashion would aid it's potential adoption (though again, I don't know if instances hinder that).

PeerTube still needs to be build a user base, attract users and creators from YouTube. Getting creators to use both platforms would help.

Lastly though, since it's P2P I don't know if that means only popular videos would then load at a comparable speed YouTube or not.
