iknowSFR··on Private Equity Is Coming for America's $12T in Retirement Savings
I would love to see a multi-decade model of 4 scenarios measuring quality of life, economic growth, and wealth distribution specifically around the re-allocation of this $12T.

1. Baseline Status quo - no changes.

2. Move all $12T into reducing the $36T of US debt. 1 time payment. All 401k’s are reduced to $0.

3. Allow for PE to productize into this $12T, siphoning off various amounts over time.

4. 401k holders can choose their own non-traditional investments.

I’m not advocating for any specific outcome because I know nothing on this topic but as a starting point, show me what happens with each, normalized and compared.

iknowSFR··on Inheriting is becoming nearly as important as working
SFR had no decreases during those years in the US. Markets like the Southeast had 7-14% increases every year. SFR companies were doing “cash for keys” because rates were increasing so quickly that it was better business to buyout a lease from the current tenant and bring in a new one at a 14% increase.

They don’t pay teachers enough to challenge the norm and deal with the fallout. Whether that’s by design or not… probably? The idea here being to incentivize teachers to do the bare minimum.
iknowSFR··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
Large US companies that I’ve worked with or for do this as a SOP. It’s not a calculation being done at the hiring manager level as much as a path of least resistance because that’s the way it’s been done for so long.
iknowSFR··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
What’s the evidence of this? It seems highly plausible but do we have any proof besides speculation?
iknowSFR··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
Broad brushstrokes incoming and pure speculation but I wrote it out anyway…

Today’s youth are more proactive with their identities these days than we were. We were and remain reactive with our identities. That preference influences what triggers the dopamine hits needed for life.

The drugs of a reactive identity culture are sugar, alcohol, narcotics, work, anything that’s a trope in movies made by boomers. These drugs have consequences that shape the user’s identity. For example: weight gain or burnout.

But the drugs of a proactive identity culture are those that drive the person’s perception of their identity. The live ahead of the consequences. Things like digital social networks, status symbols like shoes, colleges, or jobs, and anything that drives success in those status symbols. Example: Adderall helps the user study, which helps the user get better grades, which opens the door to a better college, which allows the user to flaunt that college association as part of their identity. That doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences to those drugs but those consequences aren’t tropes of modern life just yet because we’re still normalizing their outcomes.

All of this to say: sodas aren’t their thing because soda is “unhealthy” and that drags on their identity.

It’s always been a filter. Or rather, a qualifier for white collar jobs. It doesn’t mean there isn’t value obtained in education OR that their value is becoming more diluted as the more of the population obtains a bachelor’s degree. It just means that there are new qualifiers. Examples: specific schools are held in higher regard, requirements for higher education, job experience or portfolio, etc.

I get the impression that there’s misalignment on what “the system” is to each commenter here. One side views it as the larger society and the other as the pharmaceutical industry.
iknowSFR··on East and Gulf Coast ports strike
Specific to nepotism… how’s that different than anywhere else? I’m 20 years into my adult career and most companies I have worked for has had at least 1 major case of nepotism.

Anecdotally, I have worked for 3 F500 companies and all of their CEOs were the children of founders. Their siblings also sat on the board.

I worked for 2 municipalities where the children of managers were also on staff.

I worked for an investment firm that the owner was the founder’s son and all of his kids had tenure at the firm in the form of “internships” that basically helped fluff their resumes.

My point is that saying “nepotism is the name of the game” isn’t isolated to unions.

Nothing will have changed. How many times have you seen HN comments from people that never read the article? How many times have you read flat out lies on Reddit? The last 40 years of of cable news have banked on this theory. At least the last 80 years of American politics as well. There’s no degradation of critical thinking, either. It’s just a cohort that does it and a cohort that doesn’t. For all of time.
iknowSFR··on Figma AI
Every AI tool being released by 3rd parties is being blacklisted by my company. The primary reasoning is around sharing data with tool itself. On the other hand, if my clients allow them, there’s a long review and approval process followed by continuous audits.

Is anyone else running into this at their companies? I look at these tools and get excited but I’m continuously being blocked from using for work.

iknowSFR··on If A.I. Can Do Your Job, Maybe It Can Also Replace Your CEO
Classical journalism is based on static articles that if updated, are noted in some detail. So that article I read in 2003 in the NYTs is the same today as it was on publishing. But if current and future journalism is dependent on clicks, why would AI not create dynamic journalism where articles are updated based on their reception and honed into a maximized experience?

iknowSFR··on Taboos and Self-Censorship Among U.S. Psychology Professors
This is one of the more wild social concepts that the modern age of social media has super charged. At its core: what’s the acceptable line between presenting counter-views versus heresy? And one level up: what’s the responsibility of the audience to consider any counter, even heresy?

There are consequences in every choice.

iknowSFR··on Book people think they know why 9-year-olds stop reading for fun
Try Brandon Sanderson novels.

General change to my habits has been that if I’m not feeling a story, it’s okay to put it down. The amount of reading I have trudged through because I was afraid of quitting…

iknowSFR··on Ask HN: How do you look for jobs in 2023?
Privilege? Because I interact with coworkers and keep up with them? Get out of here.
iknowSFR··on Ask HN: How do you look for jobs in 2023?
How is this possible? Surely at this point you would have a network to lean on that wouldn’t leave you applying for jobs online? I’m hesitant to believe you don’t have a network and more willing to believe you don’t realize you have that network and maybe even not sure how to use it. I truly don’t mean this to be critical and instead curious: Why would you spend that much time applying for jobs with that type of success rate?

iknowSFR··on PCSX2 is an open source PS2 Emulator
There were a handful of successful online PS2 games. SOCOM and FinalFantasy were 2 but there was another called EverQuest Online Adventures (EQOA). That game was shut down in 2013 and there’s a group of former players that are trying to resurrect it. The main way to play what is left post-end of life is using PCSX2.

iknowSFR··on Tumblr’s core product strategy
I disagree. They are focusing on empowering creators but are also pointing out their weaknesses with the non-creator experience. Non-creators are arguably more important to the success of a social media brand. I think of Mixr as a great sample of that. They signed the 2 biggest streamers (creators) and it still failed because the viewers (non-creators) didn’t follow.
iknowSFR··on Backend of Meta Threads is built with Python 3.10
Can you speak to the onboarding and learning curve in that environment? What was the training like? What kinds of timelines did you experience regarding expectations as a new hire?

Asking because I’m curious about these early stage mega-tech companies that are working at a scale I can’t fathom.

iknowSFR··on Ask HN: How to do market research for product?
This is the answer for step 1. Figure out if there’s a market and figure out what that product is worth. You doing it manually is like a prototype but it’s actually providing value to your customers more than just hypotheticals without you spending resources building anything.

This approach is also forcing you to interact with potential customers. The value to you of those relationships is both quantifiable in terms of revenue but also unquantifiable in terms of learnings. Do as much as you can to learn about your customers and your product before spending anything on building it. This is the definition of MVP.
