ijustlovemath··on Mac mini will be made at a new facility in Houston
Helene survivor here. What's wild to me is that, regardless of the small scale of this facility, it's only a few hundred meters from a 1% flood zone: https://msc.fema.gov/portal/search

The address I found for the facility is 9101 Windmill Park Lane Hudson, TX 77064

This seems ill advised given recent events like Hurricane Harvey

ijustlovemath··on What is f(x) ≤ g(x) + O(1)? Inequalities With Asymptotics
Indeed, the connection to Stokes here is via the fact that both operators (abstracted derivative and antiderivative) are linear operators.
ijustlovemath··on What is f(x) ≤ g(x) + O(1)? Inequalities With Asymptotics
Huh, never thought about the potential connection between the set-containment operation and Stokes like that.
ijustlovemath··on Show HN: PgDog – Scale Postgres without changing the app
How would this product compare to a PostgREST based approach (this is the cool tech behind the original supabase) with load balancing at the HTTP level?
ijustlovemath··on The browser is the sandbox
True, and they do indeed offer an additional layer of protection (but with some nontrivial costs). All (non-business killing) avenues should be used in pursuit of defense in depth when it comes to sandboxing. You could even throw a flatpak or firejail in, but that starts to degrade performance in noticeable ways (though I've found it's nice to strive for this in your CI).
ijustlovemath··on The browser is the sandbox
Nowadays, it's fairly simple to ask for a unit file and accompanying bash script/tests for correctness. I think the barrier in that sense has practically vanished.
ijustlovemath··on The browser is the sandbox
I've found it interesting that systemd and Linux user permissions/groups never come into the sandboxing discussions. They're both quite robust, offer a good deal of customization in concert, and by their nature, are fairly low cost.
ijustlovemath··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
Make sure you install it via FDroid. Also grab Termux:API to be able to write little apps with bash scripts. Here's one I did which gives a notification based interface to Pandora: https://github.com/ijustlovemath/pbr
ijustlovemath··on My insulin pump controller uses the Linux kernel. It also violates the GPL
This person is referring to this guidance document: https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/digital-health-center-ex...

I'm a medical device developer working on this exact problem (glucose control)

ijustlovemath··on Go ahead, self-host Postgres
There's not much to recommend; just use the Postgres from your distribution's LTS repo. I like Debian for its rock solid stability.
ijustlovemath··on Go ahead, self-host Postgres
And if you want a supabase-like functionality, I'm a huge fan of PostgREST (which is actually how supabase works/worked under the hood). Make a view for your application and boom, you have a GET only REST API. Add a plpgsql function, and now you can POST. It uses JWT for auth, but usually I have application on the same VLAN as DB so it's not as rife for abuse.
ijustlovemath··on Rust in the kernel is no longer experimental
Is this the same NIOS that runs on FPGA? We wrote some code for it during digital design in university, and even an a.out was terribly slow, can't imagine running a full kernel. Though that could have been the fault of the hardware or IP we were using.
ijustlovemath··on Landlock-Ing Linux
Is io_uring not itself a set of syscalls?
ijustlovemath··on Landlock-Ing Linux
Medical device developer here: this is precisely the kind of work we need in highly regulated industries. We use an internal version of something with a similar API to manage our critical threads/processes. Keep it up!
ijustlovemath··on Pg_lake: Postgres with Iceberg and data lake access
Not to mention one of my favorite tools for adding a postgres db to your backend service: PostgREST. Insanely powerful DB introspection and automatic REST endpoint. Pretty good performance too!
ijustlovemath··on Three ways formally verified code can go wrong in practice
Usually there's a separate document that has the requirements, and from that document you have a "software detailed design" which has the specifications for how to build the software such that it upholds the requirements. Subtle but important difference.
ijustlovemath··on LoRA Without Regret
Set up a node! Bare boards that work with the app are like $50 and take a few clicks to flash and setup. The basic antenna with no amp makes contacts up to 50mi away if the conditions are right. I have one in a window and one in a backpack at all times.
ijustlovemath··on Scientists find that ice generates electricity when bent
I would think there's some amount you could capture inductively or magnetically, but perhaps it's too small to be useful. Still, feels like fundamental enough science to look into.
ijustlovemath··on Scientists find that ice generates electricity when bent
I could envision significant energy production for this technology near glaciers or ice sheets with lots of melt activity. Admittedly not really a market, but worth exploring for future applications (eg on icy moons)
ijustlovemath··on Show HN: I built an app to block Shorts and Reels
You can accomplish this in Firefox with the Unhook extension
ijustlovemath··on Bluesky: Updated Terms and Policies
the open network aspect is extremely cool, but it's hard to take seriously considering how difficult it seems to be to set up an alternate host. I do love the idea that you can just build an entirely new UX and bring the social graph for free!
ijustlovemath··on Bluesky: Updated Terms and Policies
Aren't they at ~10M MAU and falling? At least that's the impression given by https://bsky.jazco.dev/stats
ijustlovemath··on Zig Error Patterns
one less level of indentation; reading down is happy path, seems nice!
ijustlovemath··on Zig Error Patterns
The website design is so pleasing, props!
ijustlovemath··on Dropbox Passwords discontinuation
This is especially true if you simply increase the minimum password length to a certain amount. The major browsers include password managers for specifically this purpose which can generate passwords; why don't we move towards educating users how to use these tools instead of centralizing all the failure points of the web?

And yes, I understand the major conflict of interest in saving important passwords to Google, which I personally don't do and wouldn't recommend, but I think if they're interested in staying out of the Googleverse, we can also tell people about the good paid alternatives out there.

ijustlovemath··on The Pigeon River Is Perched, Which Is Geologically Bad News (2020)
I found this pretty fascinating; the two really are tremendously close to joining together, see [1] (closest point of Hominy creek) and [2] (closest point of the Pigeon River). Hominy sits slightly above the Pigeon at this closest point, so the capture would find flow reversing from dumping into the French Broad to dumping into the Pigeon.

ijustlovemath··on Bitchat – A decentralized messaging app that works over Bluetooth mesh networks
Nation states can use the baseband radios to track/monitor you, so it's best to leave your phone at home. You can't disable or observe baseband from the higher level OS.
ijustlovemath··on Is an Intel N100 or N150 a better value than a Raspberry Pi?
My steam deck has superceded my rpi for this kind of stuff. Probably not as power efficient but I live in the South and use A/C and hot water so I feel like those are far bigger spends of electricity
ijustlovemath··on SymbolicAI: A neuro-symbolic perspective on LLMs
Hallucination obstruction, I'd imagine. When you have an LLM create a formal system, it can be verified way easier than a general purpose one
