ihunter2839··on Apple has threatened to remove Amphetamine from the App Store
Down vote away, my challenge still stands for you to catch up to the cop or to pull over and ask "Hey I was just going x over the limit, do you want to give me a ticket?" :P

All jokes aside, I feel that this is a poor analogy that really misses the key issues (in my mind).

A developer creates an app and then submits an app for review. The app is approved and the app starts to build an organic following. At some later date, and without any explicit changes to the app or to the terms, Apple decides that the app is in violation of the terms for information that was available upon review. The developer and app are unfortunately the ones to pay the cost, as the organic growth is deterred. Will the new app be able to recapture the same market share? Hard to say. Regardless of Apple's action in this case, I think it would be in the company's best interest to consider the developer's experience when proceeding with issues like this.

You want to talk about a nonsensical argument, take a look at the comparison you just made.

In the first situation, you have no way of knowing whether the cop even saw you. Or if they were on duty. Or if they were previously occupied responding to some other call.

In the second, the app was explicitly submitted for review and approved by Apple. Even more egregious, the app was explicitly mentioned, by name, by Apple.

Next time, I recommend you speed up and catch the cop to make sure they know you were speeding and see how things play out.

ihunter2839··on Show HN: Organized, a GitHub repo for police misconduct records
Hi HN - Ian and Anuj here.

Organized is a public repo that provides resources about requesting public records from police departments and ensures that records that are requested and received are made available and permanent

We want to make it simple for anyone to request records from their local or state department by consolidating information about the relevant Freedom of Information laws and drafting templates for record request submissions.

Additionally, records that are received from police departments can be shared publicly and categorized in the repo, allowing for other citizens, investigative journalists, or nonprofit organizations to search for and use the data for their own analysis and activism.

Previously, we started organizeapp.org, a site to collect police misconduct information from first hand experiences. Based on our learnings with that project, and inspired by this excellent repo focused on the 2020 George Floyd protests (https://github.com/2020PB/police-brutality), we are starting this project anew.

For ways to get involved, or for more information, check out the repo!

Cheers to a brighter future.

A few quick thoughts...

Can you provide an instance where Trump's individual action prevented a military engagement or war that was actively lobbied for by leading Republican figures?

It seems unlikely for a President to start a military engagement without the support of their closest political allies and constituents. So it would seem that blame for previous wars should fall across both Congress and the President, and you can no doubt agree that many of the same Republicans (and Democrats) are in the same seats that they were then.

"If it's your goal to assume as little risk as possible, you're right that you probably shouldn't go backpacking (or engage in any other outdoor pursuit). You probably also shouldn't be living in California." What a load of bollocks. Lived here all my life and certainly understand the risks associated with outdoor lifestyles - what makes you more "Californian" than me (or anyone else), regardless of your hobbies?

Personally, I do not agree with your assertion that this was "a classic late season heatwave". Weather patterns in my neck of the woods were severely disrupted, and we had temperatures for days that would have been unfathomable just 10 years ago. Places in California that have never burned in recorded history are ablaze. California's firefighting forces are at a record high rate of deployment, and response times have been unfortunately diminished due to the scale of their deployments. This is not normal weather. Looking at the situation and assessing that "normally" the trip would not be excessively risky in an incomplete analysis in my opinion.

ihunter2839··on Escape from Creek Fire
When you say "there was a heat wave" you are referring to a weather pattern that has shattered temp records around the state. After the last heat wave and following lightnight storms which triggered fires across the state, I don't know how folks could assess that a backpacking trip to an isolated mountain area is a good idea at this point in time.

Saying "September is usually a great time" is a pretty moot point. It's usually not well above 100 across the entire state in September.

Edited to say - I am very glad they made it out safely. If you are considering backpacking anywhere in California this summer, please remember that we are having fires in historically unprecedented locations.

But if both people buy an item from the same vendor (say, an online store that services both areas), then obviously they would pay the same amount.

The differences in price you are describing are not changes in the value of the dollar but changes in the cost of producing and providing goods.

ihunter2839··on Mastercard investing in technology to identify commuters by gait, heartbeat
Falling, and the injuries / changes in quality of life that falling brings, is a serious issue for seniors. https://www.ncoa.org/news/resources-for-reporters/get-the-fa...

A few years ago, I worked for a small startup looking to use wearable devices to detect early changes in gait as a means to effectively deliver early intervention techniques. The science around the topic is solid - there is good research backing which parameters of gait are most predictive and what therapies are most effective for any given scenario.

The problem we always encountered was compliance. Customers (senior living facilities, insurance agencies, etc) want to know that the devices are being used. Seniors are notoriously slow to adopt tech, and adding another device to daily life is the last thing most seniors that we spoke to wanted to deal with.

We got to interview with YC for this idea but were rejected. Skimming the companies from that batch I later found https://www.totemic.com/ They use back-skatter technologies to provide a compliance-free fall monitoring system. After spending two years in the problem space, I knew a superior solution when I saw it.

IANAP (really, IA(BARELY)AB), but I am not exactly clear where these additional electrons are sneaking in. Either way, I'm not sure the change would be significant enough to move the spectral peak outside of the range for a specific residue. There are lots of false peaks, and a lot of pre / post processing goes into managing those complexities.

Re bioinformatics /residues / lingo / life - bioinformatics is a catch all term for a set of loosely related tools being applied across the full field of disciplines. The early pioneers in bioinformatics (like Pevzner himself) were all physicists and electrical engineers who moved into the realm of biology. Your exact terminology is generally dependent on the specific problem you are solving and may be slightly different that the more general uses of the same words. Either way, I hope that if you are interested in the underlying topics that bioinformatics deals with, you won't let some issues in vernacular trip you up!

ihunter2839··on Rosalind: Learn bioinformatics by programming it
Just a note - the OH and the H+ don't specifically pair up to form a single water molecule; realistically, there will be a number of water molecules in play throughout the reaction.

Rather nit-picky, though. Thanks for the diagrams :)

ihunter2839··on Rosalind: Learn bioinformatics by programming it
Re: the mass of a protein is the sum of all its residues plus the mass of a single water molecule / your second definition, they are equivalent. You could re-write you second version as (sum of all residues minus left and right most) + (sum of left and right residues + two molecules of water) - (one molecule of water) === sum of residues + one water molecule.

(The key is that residues are created whenever a molecule of water is expelled. In theory, you can expel exactly one water molecule from each amino acid to create a residue, with one hydrogen from the amine group and the hydroxl from the carboxylic acid. In reality, it takes two amino acids to start the process of peptide synthesis, and each aa contributes only one part (either the proton or the hydroxl group) of the theoretically expelled water molecule. In reality its not even a single water molecule, as the hydroxyl group is going to pick up a spare proton from solution and the extra proton on the amine will get pick up by gawd knows what) <-- Downright wrong (at least, in regards to its importance to residues.).

The condensation is connected in this instance but not in all instances of residues. I think the usage is more clear if you look at some of the other examples in the biochemistry section of the wiki page "...a residue refers to a specific monomer within the polymeric chain of a polysaccharide, protein or nucleic acid. One might say, "This protein consists of 118 amino acid residues" or "The histidine residue is considered to be basic because it contains an imidazole ring." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Residue_(chemistry))

This site was developed by Pavel Pevzner, who teaches bioinformatics at UCSD. We used this site as the main curriculum in one of our final bioinformatics class, and after solving ~ 10 - 15 problems a week for 10 weeks, I don't recall a single time where the error was in the problem set solutions.

Re: the problem - not a hundred percent on this, but I think the issue is that they are vague on the fact that this is a theoretical question, not a practical one. The key is that the question itself does not mention the addition of the water molecule, just that you have a sequence P with a dictionary of weights.

Edit 1: If memory serves me correct, after the initial ionization phase of mass spectroscopy, the additional water molecule is discarded, making it insignificant in the analysis of your peptide sequences.

Edit 2: If anyone is interested in following through this site, I would highly recommended using the existing problem tracks http://rosalind.info/problems/list-view/?location=bioinforma... These will help lay out the problems in a logical order an ensure you have the skills you need to progress. Alignment problems are a great way to learn dynamic programming and will allow you to move onto some of these other problems (like mass spec and HMMs) more reasonably (at least, in my experience!) Good luck!

Can you comment on whether the proposal was part of the the SBIR / STTR program? Just curious as to the scope of companies that were participants in the proposal process.

As an aside - these instances of underfunded and underdeveloped services, specifically in the political sphere, are really painful reminders of the flip side to the idealistic technocratic future that I think a lot of folks around here assume to be an inevitability.
