igorgue··on Don't Read the Comments
Is not about "thick skin" is about entrepreneurs not having the right motives.

From the music book "Effortless Mastery":

"If you weren’t so concerned about your level of playing, you’d hang in for as long as it took. It would be like a hobby.
That’s why this book stresses again and again developing a detachment to what you’re doing while you are doing it.
However, it is so easy to become discouraged.
All you need is one night when you didn’t play what you wanted to hear, and the ego says,
  ”Screw it! It’s not happening.”
Again and again, this needs to be said:
you probably cannot develop this level of patience if you are vain about your playing!"
Excerpt From: Kenny Werner. “Effortless Mastery.” iBooks. https://itun.es/us/LiM3B.l

Or I can change it for you guys:

"If you weren't so concerned about your personal image and more concern about changing the world,
you'd hang in for as long as it took"
The problem here my dear Sam is, most modern entrepreneurs have HUGE egos, and that's exactly why, without the bless from Mr. Luck, they all fucking fail.

Basically, whoever was "down" that you used as example, is a person who just hasn't found the passion on his project that he claims to have.

Why do people who claim to be "changing the world" go home cry over somebody, being "mean" to them? Is that how easy they get discouraged? Is like if Batman gave up after 1 time the joker made fun of him... Seeing this here, with a bunch of nerds that think they're better than anybody makes me sad. Cause I'm one of you, and I HATE being associated with egotistical people.

igorgue··on Ask HN: When you feel stuck in life
Read more, seriously do.

It's quite easy for us (I'm 29 too) to get too caught up into the idea of happiness we see on the news or all the public stories we know.

Many people you admire were what could be considered a failure at 29, but that's not newsworthy, we always love the young ones, that they've figured out everything by the time they're 23 or less (12?). That's not true for most people, and doesn't mean you won't find happiness in the near of far future.

That's what helps me to get some perspective. Also know that regardless of how successful you are your life impacts way more people than what you think.

It's tough, and it's something you'd have to experience I think many times in your life.

Looks awesome, just one tip: Would be cool if the example code works, would be very nice for people to test with.

igorgue··on How becoming a pilot made me a better programmer
In my experience, the programmers I've worked with that are also pilots have been just too meticulous for the work, there's too much attention to detail and focus that doesn't let them work on teams. And, sadly those traits are pretty bad to get stuff done.

Again, my experience. They had to let them go, although they are very bright and likely I'd hire a pilot again.

igorgue··on United States Health Care Reform: Progress to Date and Next Steps
Funny how you adjusted your example to make it look ridiculous.

"Barack Obama, President of the United States of America" == "Guido van Rossum, Python's BDFL"

"Barack Obama, JD" == "Guido van Rossum, Software Engineer"

Which, I'm cool with.

igorgue··on Exercise Releases Brain-Healthy Protein
Why do we have an article saying basically the same thing every single week here?

I get it, and I think everyone here has, exercise is good for you, in many ways, don't sit on your ass all day.

I guess it's sad to see this becoming the "Good Morning America" of tech (not that we didn't have those ones already) or the ultra localized we-only-care-about-the-bay-area medium.

igorgue··on Voters may be asked to tax SF tech companies
Come on, nobody is going anywhere there's no tech investors.

There are many states, that pay a lot less taxes (some only Sales and Property tax) and the SF Tech community always ignores because SF is so cool (there's no tech investors).

You guys are staying, tax or no tax, stop whining.

igorgue··on Voters may be asked to tax SF tech companies
Trump / Peter Thiel 2016!!!
igorgue··on Voters may be asked to tax SF tech companies
The same industry that incorporate in a different state mainly to avoid taxes, doesn't like taxes... Big surprise. Move to Delaware guys lol.
igorgue··on “Should you encrypt or compress first?”
Read the article smarty pants ;-)
igorgue··on Trump
Let's start with you guys Sam, stop taking money from Peter Thiel who's a Trump delegate.
igorgue··on How Kik Predicted the Rise of Chat Bots
Twitter invented mentions, even tho IRC had them way before.

Kik invented Chat bots, even tho IRC had them way before.

Your next startup invented xyz, even tho IRC had them way before.

igorgue··on How Kik Predicted the Rise of Chat Bots
Kik is also the #1 on spam bots, seriously their amount of spam (scammer accounts) is worrying.
igorgue··on Alan Kay has agreed to do an AMA today
If you don't have the time or energy for such projects then you CAN'T do them. The answer is there.
igorgue··on SimpleCitizen (YC S16) Is TurboTax for Immigration
Hah, doing the process myself right now and noticing they charge in Miami $500 just for consultation.

Great product idea, I'm trying it now!

igorgue··on Ask HN: What programming language has you really excited lately, and why?
Same here, it makes me go like woo!
igorgue··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
Without Thiel's money there wouldn't be a trial.

Trust me, Hulk Hogan and Thiel aren't friends, he just has a personal vendeta with it.

And I think you bought into a narrative of Silicon Valley cocksuckers ;-)

igorgue··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
The only reason the trial exists is not because of the tape, is because of Thiel's thin skin, cause he didn't have any grounds on his.

I don't think you understand how this is an abuse of money on the juritary system.

igorgue··on Surge – Static Web Publishing for Front-End Developers
In this particular case, my understanding is, the fully static code is just the frontend, in other words to not render HTML from your Web Server to the Browsers.
igorgue··on Surge – Static Web Publishing for Front-End Developers
Done this many times, in fact currently I deploy to S3 (look for "static website") and the static site interacts with an API.

This is the whole point of JavaScript frameworks to me. And definitely not trivial stuff.

igorgue··on John Oliver buys $15M in debt and forgives all of it on 'Last Week Tonight'
Kindof ironic it's allowed everywhere like this presidential race.
igorgue··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
You are the kind of person who likes the first amendment only for compliments, it supposed to be for these kind of stuff, the ugly shit.

Again, he's a public figure.

igorgue··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
CLEARLY PETER THIEL LIFE WAS RUINED...
igorgue··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
Thin skinned billionaires...
igorgue··on John Oliver buys $15M in debt and forgives all of it on 'Last Week Tonight'
That's how people feel when watching Silicon Valley on HBO to be honest.

To me is perfect cause I like programming, music, politics and weed.

igorgue··on Salary Negotiation
>> the manager expected me to stay late 3x a week

I'd argue the job isn't that great.

igorgue··on Vote.org is a non-profit that wants to get the U.S. to 100% voter turnout
Do you guys know what "increase" means? Seriously...
igorgue··on Vote.org is a non-profit that wants to get the U.S. to 100% voter turnout
Yes, it's very much bs, also take a look at the way districts are laid out in America for congressional and presidential races...

It's just A LOT OF THINGS are a little fucked up with our voting system and the combination of ALL OF THEM makes it a HUGE MESS!

igorgue··on Vote.org is a non-profit that wants to get the U.S. to 100% voter turnout
And plenty aren't... Many companies actually respect that every single company I worked at in the 10 years I've lived in America respected Christmas and New Year Day for example. I don't get your point, your situation is not the same as everyone else.
igorgue··on Vote.org is a non-profit that wants to get the U.S. to 100% voter turnout
That's EXACTLY my point, I'm from the "third world" and our election is on a Sunday and Monday is off for everyone, elections are a celebration, it should be a very important moment to everyone, enough to get so drunk the day after :-). It's so confusing living in the USA and looking at so much justified apathy for the political environment.

What people here would never understand (and this is due being mostly white nerdy dudes here) is that it's so hard to get time off work when you're a blue collar guy, and even though it's paid off in some states (California for example pays for 2 hours of work that day) it's not enough. And it's stated by many companies that your work is more important, especially since nobody goes to vote anyways.

I work at a startup and nobody went to vote, everyone has work to do. I cannot skip a "lunch meeting" cause I don't have "lunch meetings".

And finally, I don't want to keep beating the dead horse but whatever, Bernie Sanders reintroduced the concept and hasn't being enacted https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy_Day_(United_States)
