ignoranceprior··on Google Docs will now use canvas based rendering
Visiting that website made my laptop's fans start running.
ignoranceprior··on TikTok launching jobs service for Gen Z
Damn, I guess unattractive people like me won't be able to get a job in the near future.

At least it's not Tinder for jobs, that would be even worse.

ignoranceprior··on Collabarate on bringing about the end of crypto currencies like Bitcoin
Why not just switch to proof of stake? Isn't that supposed to be much less environmentally costly?
ignoranceprior··on A Brazen Hack of $69M Beeple Revealed the Vulnerability of NFT Market
This seems to be more like fraud/forgery than theft.
ignoranceprior··on MIT vs. Unlicense – why do you pick one vs. the other?
MIT requires attribution. If you care about that then it makes sense to choose it.

Also note that the FSF recommends CC0 over the Unlicense if you want to release something into the public domain, but in practice the difference probably doesn't matter.

ignoranceprior··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
It is worrying to consider that in all likelihood, some people with actually malicious motives, rather than clinical academic curiosity, have probably introduced introduced serious security bugs into popular FOSS projects such as the Linux kernel.

Before this study came out, I'm pretty sure there were already known examples of this happening, and it would have been reasonable to assume that some such vulnerabilities existed. But now we have even more reason to worry, given that they succeeded doing this multiple times as a two person team without real institutional backing. Imagine what a state-level actor could do.

ignoranceprior··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
This is unjustified xenophobia. And besides, if they were really trying to get bugs into the Linux kernel to further some nefarious goal, why would they publish a paper on it?

Simplest explanation is that they just wanted the publication, not to blame it on CCP or the researchers' nationality.

ignoranceprior··on Streaming subtitled box sets is the new Eurovision
It's a YC company.
ignoranceprior··on Streaming subtitled box sets is the new Eurovision
How is it trolling? 9GAG is a YC company.
ignoranceprior··on Filecoin Foundation Grants 50k FIL to the Internet Archive
The idea of making the Internet Archive decentralized is a very good one. It would be a real tragedy if the IA burned down like the Library of Alexandria did. I know Archive Team/Jason Scott attempted this a few years back with the IA.bak project but it seems like that died, so I hope this time turns out better.

That said, I don't actually understand how cryptocurrency or blockchains help with distributed file storage. Are these "filecoins" actually useful for anything, like incentivizing people to make copies of files? I'm by default skeptical when I hear about cryptocurrencies because the majority of ICOs seem to be get-rich-schemes riding off the Bitcoin buzzwave that then fizzle out over time.

ignoranceprior··on Is it Covid or fear of Covid that kills?
>From Google Trends data, we see very few searches for “COVID” between January 1 2020 and February 20, 2020 in the United States

Well, the name "COVID" wasn't even coined by the WHO until 11 February 2020.

https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2...

You should compare the search terms coronavirus, nCoV, and Wuhan. (Although "Wuhan virus" now is a term only used by Trump supporters, for a while even Wikipedia had the name as "Wuhan coronavirus".)

Also, it's weird that I got downvoted for this entirely factual comment.

Watt? Joule?

He does currently:

ignoranceprior··on GPT Neo: open-source GPT model, with pretrained 1.3B & 2.7B weight models
Are there any output samples? Would like to get a sense of how close this is to GPT-2 vs. GPT-3 levels of coherency.
ignoranceprior··on Wild Animal Suffering
David Pearce has some good writings on this
ignoranceprior··on World's Littlest Skyscraper
Short guys should try this on Tinder. "How tall are you?" "6 5". Then when they meet up, explain that you meant 65 inches and not 6 feet 5 inches.
ignoranceprior··on Gab has been hacked and 70GB of data leaked
Can someone explain the difference between Gab and Parler to someone unfamiliar with both?
ignoranceprior··on Wikinews mourns loss of volunteer John Shutt
Didn't recognize his real name but once I saw his username was Pi zero I immediately knew he who he was. He was one of the most prolific contributors to Wikinews. Sad news for the project and his family.
ignoranceprior··on Poll: Which programming language do you use most often?
Did someone actually vote for Algol? Hard to believe in 2021. Or, maybe the vote count started at 1 and nobody actually chose it.

If someone here really does use Algol as their go-to language, I'd like to hear why.

ignoranceprior··on South African Hunter Kills Elderly Giraffe for a Valentine’s Day Gift to Husband
> “Someone who kills another sentient being, cuts out their heart, and boasts about it fits the definition of a sociopath,” she said.

I'm inclined to agree with this assessment.

ignoranceprior··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
I personally like Eric Rosen, because he's got that calm and relaxing Bob Ross energy.
ignoranceprior··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
There already are competitors to YouTube, and technically there's nothing stopping anyone from making their own video hosting site. Except overwhelming first-mover advantage and network effects, of course.
ignoranceprior··on Adversarial.io – Fighting mass image recognition
We're still in the phase where different models can play cat and mouse, but I wouldn't count on this lasting very long. Given that we know it's possible to correctly recognize these perturbed images (proof: humans can), it's only a matter of time until AI catches up and there's nothing you can do to prevent an image of your face from being identified immediately.
ignoranceprior··on 'Sexual favours were the norm in music industry'
Does "Mafia" here refer to the Cosa Nostra, or other organized crime syndicates?
ignoranceprior··on Why Computers Will Never Write Good Novels
I suspect that this prediction will turn out to be false, but it's paywalled so I can't even read their full argument.
ignoranceprior··on [dead]
Signing this is probably a good way to get added to Twitter blocklists and cancellation lists, ironically.
ignoranceprior··on How Poverty Makes Workers Less Productive
how I imagine (straw) hyper-capitalists think:

"why is poverty bad? not because we have empathy for poor people, nah, just because poor people are not being optimally productive worker bees"
