ignoramous··on DeepSeek planning to significantly raise prices
> DeepSeek Flash 0731 as the implementer

MiniMax's "token plan" ($20/mo for 1.7b tokens) is cost competitive. MiniMax M3 is equally good, if not better than DeepSeek v4, at coding: https://platform.minimax.io/subscribe/token-plan?tab=individ...

If you prefer pay-as-you-go, then Xiaomi MiMo is the only other provider with comparable models (MiMo v2.5 & Pro) that matches DeepSeek's current API rates for input/output/cache: https://mimo.mi.com/docs/price/pay-as-you-go

Meanwhile, Meta is running a 10x discount on Muse Spark 1.2 (Grok 4.5 / Sonnet 5 level model), if you opt-in to data sharing: https://dev.meta.ai/docs/getting-started/pricing-rate-limits

> I'm OK spending max $100/month on APIs, ideally with Zero data retention.

In that case, probably you'll get more out of OpenAI's coding plan, as (from what I hear routinely) the GPT 5.6 series is thrifty with token use but as smart as the Claude 5 series: https://x.com/ArtificialAnlys/status/2085083490056589784 / https://archive.vn/3VDlN

> I just cannot comprehend this level of corporate villainy that boils down to:

Easy to comprehend: Trust lost is hard to gain.

Though, it is extremely competitive of Meta to sell Muse Spark (Grok 4.5 / Qwen 3.8 Max level model) cheaper than DeepSeek v4 Flash / MiMo v2.5 / GPT 5.6 Luna, regardless.

ignoramous··on Google Assistant is going away on Mobile Devices
rdns dev here

The latest version is v055z [0], which handles WireGuard re-connectivity better across a range of providers. One Proton specific quirk we've hit was: Since Rethink lets you connect multiple WireGuards at once, their free tier especially may start rejecting "WireGuard handshakes" from your client, if you do so.

Some tips:

- If you don't mind extra battery use, setup "Persistent KeepAlive" for your all your WireGuard Peers. Any value between 30s to 100s is decent enough.

- Alternatively, if you're on version v055v+, then consider turning on Configure -> Network -> Smart Persistent Keepalive which shouldn't use up as much battery but yet attempt to keep a connection open whenever "user presence" is expected by Rethink.

- Turn on Configure -> DNS -> Split DNS only if you're Android 12+ which has comparatively better APIs to be able to implement per-app split-tunnel DNS across multiple WireGuards.

- Tap on the "Refresh" icon in Configure -> Proxy -> Setup WireGuard to instruct Rethink to attempt re-connections to all dormant Peers.

- Look for internal state in About -> General (scroll to the bottom to the section that goes "WireGuard") and see if you spot any mismatch there with respect to MTU, for example. And if so, consider opening a report on GitHub.

- Look for About -> App Logs and see if you spot any errors (or for warning, info, or debug, you'll have to change the log level when prompted) related to WireGuard. You can use the search bar to filter for "wg", which should keep the output limited to WireGuard stuff.

- Change Configure -> Network -> Choose IP version to "Auto" if you happen to go between IPv4-only / IPv6-only / dual-stack networks, or set it to "IPv4 & IPv6", if you're always on dual-stack networks.

ignoramous··on Muse Code and Muse Spark 1.2
In my experience using DeepSeek v4 Flash free tier (context size limited to ~200k), the model isn't nearly as good as the paid one for agentic coding tasks. Unsure, if that's the case with these other providers too, though I wouldn't be surprised if it indeed is.
ignoramous··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
How? Muse Spark 1.1 is a huge step up from Llama 4 & competitive with xAI's Grok 4.5. In another 3 to 4 releases, MSL might very well be challenging Ant & OAI. Moonshot, despite their comparatively limited resources, has already demonstrated that the Big 2 aren't invincible.

ignoramous··on Aristotle quotes on virtue, knowledge, and happiness

The aim of the wise is not to secure pleasure, but to avoid pain.
Reminds me of Charlie Munger's Inversion principle that he borrowed from German mathematician Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi's man muss immer umkehren. https://fs.blog/inversion/

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
As counter points, read Cedirc Chin's Problems with deliberate practice, https://commoncog.com/the-problems-with-deliberate-practice/ and Sensemaking as the heart of expertise, https://commoncog.com/sensemaking-heart-of-expertise/

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.
This Amjad Masad comment lives rent-free in my head: "Tolerating some amount of cognitive dissonance is one of the best things that I was able to develop in myself ... people don't update their beliefs when new evidence comes to light ... The drive to avoid cognitive dissonance shackles you to your existing beliefs (see confirmation bias)". https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11799477 (2016).

ignoramous··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
"The thing" isn't free [0]: It is cheap by US/EU income standards.

> who is the customer

If no one else, then definitely those that can only budget $1/mo to $5/mo. Probably 100s of millions, if not billions, of the Global South.

[0] Free access to DeepSeek v4 Flash is indeed available from providers like OpenRouter, OpenCode, and Freebuff (to name a few), but no ZDR.

Could OpenAI be running a different model for high+max?
ignoramous··on Advancing the price-performance frontier with GPT‑5.6
DeepSeek v4 Pro & MiMo v2.5 Pro (Opus 4.6 quality models for code) are insanely cheap for agent-driven work due to their super low cached-input prices ($0.0036/mtok) [0]. For Luna, the cached-input price drop isn't disclosed in TFA, but the pricing page puts it at $0.02/mtok, & that's 5x more expensive.

[0] I am constantly surprised how much work pay-as-you-go with DeepSeek / MiMo will get done. I've barely crossed $2 each in a month of use (~200m tokens).

ignoramous··on The Cold Email
I was in a similar situation and probably sent a cringy, emotional email because when I read it back now after all these years, I am embarrassed at how desperate my tone was. It all worked out well, though; I learnt to handle rejections better, and in fact ended up with way better gig in merely 3 weeks after that.
ignoramous··on Launch HN: Tokenless (YC S26) – Automatic model switching to save money
> the next task is SO HARD that it doesn't make sense to not use frontier

How does tokenless quantify "so hard"?

> 1 turn to crack versus 100 turns for Deepseek to crack

Interesting definition for a "frontier". What is a "turn" here? Token count? Request count? Context-based?

I've found that MiniMax M3 (a smaller model at 295b) will code up better when DeepSeek v4 Pro (1.6t) will not (and vice versa).
