ignoramceisblis··on Elon Musk’s Friendship with Sergey Brin Ruptured by Alleged Affair
Yes, let's keep piling on blame to our favorite boogeymen: conservatives, Republicans, ...

Any shred of evidence or not, it must be piled on! Surely we are not the ones fanning divisiveness.

ignoramceisblis··on TC Energy scraps Keystone XL pipeline project after Biden revokes key permit
The "logic" employed here is:

"We were told or otherwise made to believe your industry should stop doing what it's doing. Therefore, you should stop doing what you're doing." ("I know the future. You don't exist. So you might as well stop existing now.")

The irony is this person has no idea of "the reality." If the reality was that the pipeline served no purpose, had no value, it would not have gone through the lengthy process it's already been through. And if tar sands oil had no value, it wouldn't be retrieved.

But it will be. It will be retrieved and it will be transported, somehow, for the simple fact that people and industries use it. And if you choose a costlier method of transport, then people will feel those costs. Simply saying "No, it's not gonna go by rail or go by ship. Because I said so." is blind arrogance.

https://www.climatechangenews.com/2021/06/10/tar-sands-compa...

The oil will still be extracted. It will still be transported to the entities who use it.

When white dudes do good things, like supporting emergency shelters when their working-class lives are not otherwise consuming them, we get to take them for granted. Talk down about them. It's okay. In fact, it's all the rage.

Don't worry, not ALL of the people doing the things we want done are white dudes. Your experience with our club will not be ruined by the presence of this lower caste. Pay little mind to them. In fact, pay them little, in general.

ignoramceisblis··on Capitol Attack Was Months in the Making on Facebook
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_shooting_of_Dallas_police...

Except it happened at a BLM protest. And in this day and age, evidently having someone commit some violent act at an event is enough to blame scores (and more) of other people at that event, and organizations associated with it. And then de-platform them, and de-monetize them, .... and generally de-humanize them. (Like the protest at the Capitol)

Also, he was a member of the New Black Panther Party:

> NBPP head Quanell X said after the shooting that Johnson had been a member of the NBPP's Houston chapter for about six months, several years before.

> Following the shooting, a national NBPP leader distanced the group from Johnson, saying that he "was not a member of" the party.

But of course, any organization with ties to him would want to cut those ties and disavow him, making themselves look clean. Do you think BLM or other organizations would want ties to such people exposed?

ignoramceisblis··on U.S. Justice Dept weighs stripping federal funds from cities allowing 'anarchy'
Correction:

And they ask "where are the police?" after unanimously deciding to defund (rather, abolish) the police.

So an entire police force must be abolished because of the alleged abuses of a few?

ignoramceisblis··on U.S. Justice Dept weighs stripping federal funds from cities allowing 'anarchy'
Addendum: Minneapolis should also be considered, as their local government took similar actions which resulted in similar - predictable - results: https://hotair.com/archives/ed-morrissey/2020/09/16/minneapo...

Because I didn't see a link to it in the article, a brief explaining why the decision was made: https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/department-justice-identifies...

If you govern a people and willfully allow them to become endangered through, eg. defunding the police, permitting lawless zones throughout your jurisdiction, and so on, and the end result is innocent lives under your power are harmed or destroyed, then you should be held accountable.

You encounter this more than you might think when you point out other peoples' (or bots') bullshit. There are people (and bots) in the audience who feel they have to shout you down, and, effectively, prop up the bullshit.

But, of course, many of them won't hold themselves accountable for what happens.

It's funny you mention the court system as knowing how to deal with manipulated and falsified evidence, but you imply the videos from Project Veritas, &c., were "cleverly-edited exposes," when it is the courts - and even Planned Parenthood, while in a legal case - that have found those videos to be factual, and to not have any particular omissions, and to be valid evidence:

https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/sites/default/files/ima...

page 10:

> The district court stated, inaccurately, that the CMP video had not been authenticated and suggested that it may have been edited.

> In fact, the record reflects that OIG had submitted a report from a forensic firm concluding that the video was authentic and not deceptively edited. And the plaintiffs did not identify any particular omission or addition in the video footage.

[Planned Parenthood are the plaintiffs in this specific case.]

ignoramceisblis··on Why Are So Many People on Capitol Hill Getting Infected?
It certainly depends on the type of mask. N95 and higher (N99, N100, and similar) provide, in my view, adequate protection for the wearer. There are plenty of other parameters though, eg. proximity and time near others, the size of the room you're in and its circulation. But as example, I feel comfortable wearing N95 while I'm shopping at a super market, and would still feel comfortable if no one else was wearing any mask at all.

First, reporting a lack of intelligence that directly links those actions to Antifa, especially only a week after the first protest, does not mean there was no direct link. But have a counterpoint, from some people who already had some intelligence: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/law-enfo...

> "U.S. police officials said they are examining both local and out-of-state actors focused on creating damage and inciting violent confrontations with police (and possibly other protesters) in the name of anarchist and antifa causes."

> "They prepared to commit property damage and directed people who were following them that this should be done selectively and only in wealthier areas or at high-end stores run by corporate entities."

> "And they developed a complex network of bicycle scouts to move ahead of demonstrators in different directions of where police were and where police were not for purposes of being able to direct groups from the larger group to places where they could commit acts of vandalism including the torching of police vehicles and Molotov cocktails where they thought officers would not be."

Beyond even Antifa and similar groups, my first point is largely about the statement "garden variety robbers unassociated with any political group."

There have been many protests throughout America's history. Most of them are done peacefully. Clearly most of them do not approach the level of violence and destruction that the recent riots and looting accomplished--riots and looting that coincided with those protests. Are we to believe this is largely coincidence?

The images and videos of the damage and looting that was done are out there. Windows, doors, and even entire buildings destroyed and ransacked, with "F* cops", "F* 12", "ACAB", &c. scrawled on the remains. Smashing, grabbing, chanting, it's all out there. There was obviously a political statement meant by many if not most of those people. This is made even more obvious when there are political groups that make statements such as: "By any means necessary", "No justice, no peace", "Give us what we want or we'll burn down the system", &c.

These are obviously politically-motivated actions. You cannot bear witness to all of the radical statements that have been made, also bear witness to the radical acts carried out and publicly supported, and then say the two are not related.

ignoramceisblis··on Resignation Letter
"No true Scotsman." Really?

And I'm not sure how bad you think the rioting and looting was, but in Minnesota (mostly Minneapolis) alone, the economic loss is already estimated at $500 million dollars, with over one thousand businesses affected, and many were destroyed. ignoramceisblis··on Hundreds of hyperpartisan sites are masquerading as local news
Even before reading the article, I correctly guessed the message they wanted to send.

By a large margin, most "news" that I've seen that gets any popular attention (through channels with any significant number of consumers) has been of the variety that paints conservatives as being the problem, having unfair advantages, &c.

So what does that tell you about the actual balance of power?

It's entirely predictable.

ignoramceisblis··on I Cited Their Study, So They Disavowed It
Your statement is just not true. They retracted their study because, in their own words: "Although our data and statistical approach were valid to estimate the question we actually tested (the race of civilians fatally shot by police), given continued misuse of the article (e.g., MacDonald, 2020) we felt the right decision was to retract the article rather than publish further corrections." Source: https://retractionwatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/PNAS_...

They want to retract their study because they feel its information is being "misused," which is extremely disturbing in the context of honest academic research. I won't go into this deeply, but valid information on such a hot button subject is exactly what we need right now, and withdrawing valid information only leads to more vacuum, which will be filled by whatever the dominant political power declares.

As to your second statement, statisticians regularly use one quantity as a proxy for another. Here, they used the violent crime (by race) rates as a proxy for police encounters. This is in contrast to using gross population race proportions as a proxy for police encounters. Other studies--which have not been retracted--have used gross population race proportions as a proxy for police encounters. Will those be retracted? Will future studies using similar proxies be retracted? Only if they go against a powerful narrative, I wager.

ignoramceisblis··on [dead]
Given the preponderance of attention that has been given to the "other side" of this "non-tech political" situation by this site--the happy-glowy "completely peaceful" protests (as mentioned by at least one other Hacker News commenter in a top-level, highest-ranked comment)--I think it's fair to show the effects of what really transpired over those days, and in particular their effects on business.

As the article states, near 1000 commercial properties were damaged, and 52 were completely destroyed. This business and its employees are not the only ones grappling with the effects of this massive indiscriminate violence, and I think it's important to see the effects of those actions.

We're conditioning a culture to be hypersensitive, and at the same time, for some of them, hyperaggressive. What they consider trauma does not begin to approach yours.

In other times, their vocal ignorant statements would be squashed immediately upon utterance. In these times, they receive reinforcement, from some.

At least on using the age of git/GitHub repos to determine the legitimacy of a project/effort: I would say it's not uncommon for some groups to time the release of their code with the publication of some announcement of it. I'd also say it's not unusual to adjust (for example, collapse) the git repo history when publishing code.
