igitur··on Browserling goes viral with cheap phone users trying to use WhatsApp
To use WhatsApp Web, your actual mobile device still needs to be connected. If I completely disconnect my phone, e.g. put it in airplane mode, I get this on WhatsApp web: Phone not connected. Make sure your phone has an active Internet connection.

The link follows to https://faq.whatsapp.com/faq/web/28080002

So I admit, I'm also struggling to see what the benefit of using WhatsApp through Browserling is.

igitur··on World's steepest funicular railway opens in Switzerland
So a 90° angle is... infinity%?
igitur··on Show HN: Promptui – Rich UI elements for cli prompts in Go
Anything like this for a .NET command line application?
igitur··on Show HN: Promptui – Rich UI elements for cli prompts in Go
I like this. Do similar projects exist for other languages?
igitur··on Zimbabwe's Military in Apparent Takeover, Says It Has Custody of President
It's probably wrong to reduce a person's success to one measure. He obviously had his failures, but his contributions to Zimbabwe's healthcare and education systems are what I remember and is why I called him a good leader early on.

Even today, here in neighbouring South Africa, there is a big gap in the average literacy rate of Zimbabwean and a South African.

Mugabe totally stuffed up the country later. But credit where credit is due.

igitur··on Zimbabwe's Military in Apparent Takeover, Says It Has Custody of President
And initially he was a very good leader. But lately, if you listen to his speeches, he is downright senile. And he can hardly walk on his own. That's why the general convention of serving a maximum of 2 or 3 terms is so important.
igitur··on November Workshop: Running the Pi-hole Network-wide Ad-blocker, and more
Same here. I switched from Pi-Hole to Privoxy and haven't looked back.
igitur··on Calamine: Excel file reader, written in Rust
http://github.com/ClosedXML/ClosedXML is a wrapper around OpenXML and attempts to fill that gap. It has partial support of Excel formula evaluation.

Disclaimer: I'm a current ClosedXML contributor.

igitur··on Calamine: Excel file reader, written in Rust
Which C# libraries were used in comparison? The 2 I know of, EPPlus and ClosedXML, do much more than just read cell values, so it's unfair to compare against those. For example the additional complexity of handling styles adds overhead.

igitur··on Quadratic voting (2014)
Isn't it a bit pedantic to want me to repeat arguments from the original post?

OK, here you go: "Weyl and Lalley prove that the collective decision rapidly approximates efficiency as the number of voters increases. By contrast, no extant voting procedure is efficient."

igitur··on Quadratic voting (2014)
One-person-one-vote is a terrible system, with the only advantage of it being simple and easy to understand, which was important when votes could be counted only by hand.

CGP Grey has made an excellent and well known video series explaining this, so I don't think I need to debate it much further here.

igitur··on Quadratic voting (2014)
I would like to see how this compares to exponential voting.
igitur··on Quadratic voting (2014)
I accept that this is a superior voting system to one-person-one-vote. However, for it to succeed, it should not merely be superior, it should also appear superior. The trust the voters put into the system is paramount. And for that to be true, the vast majority of the voters have to understand exactly how it works. Unfortunately, and, yes, I'm a cynic, I don't believe we are close to having a voter base that is capable of understanding, and hence accepting an outcome of such a voting system.

igitur··on Show HN: Trade your abandoned side projects on Borderline.biz
Does anything like this for open source projects exist? I'm interested in finding unfinished, abandoned open source projects in the technology of my choice that I can take over and steer in the direction that I want. And of course without changing the license.
igitur··on Wild Dogs Sneeze When They Are Ready to Hunt
Mine too. In fact, I've taught her to do it on command.
igitur··on Bank of Canada increases overnight rate target to 1 per cent
Because they're a good match if you have a nominal (non inflation linked) book of liabilities, eg a pension fund that pays pensions that increase by a fixed rate every year.
igitur··on ReactOS 0.4.6 released
The great thing about developers working on a project in their free time, is that they can choose anything they want. They're not constrained by what other people think they should be doing, despicable or otherwise.
igitur··on Fucking Sue Me (2011)
My point about survivorship wasn't about startups succeeding or failing in general and whether they're here to tell their story. It was about taking on excess, uncalculated risk, in this case about not covering your legal arse.

You don't see (many) people here telling how they didn't put proper contacts in place, got sued and failed because of that alone.

And I postulate that it happens a lot more than most of us think.

igitur··on Fucking Sue Me (2011)
Epitome of survivor bias. Those who failed by taking on too much risk aren't here to tell their story.
igitur··on Show HN: Pdf-Bot, an API/CLI for Generating PDFs Using Headless Chrome
How does this compare to wkhtmltopdf, which, IIRC, uses WebKit to render the pdf?
igitur··on UK survey of 14-24-year-olds indicates social networks harm mental health
I put really little value on what surveyees think causes their anxiety. Epitome of anecdotal data.
igitur··on UK survey of 14-24-year-olds indicates social networks harm mental health
From what I gather this found only some correlation, not causation. So I might as well postulate that people with mental health problems are more likely to be on social media. That's not too difficult to believe.
igitur··on 88% of all integers have a factor under 100
Should be:

88 percent of all integers have a PRIME factor under 100

All integers have a factor under 100, which is 1.

igitur··on Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper (1807)
> It is a melancholy truth, that a suppression of the press could not more compleatly deprive the nation of it's benefits, than is done by it's abandoned prostitution to falsehood.

igitur··on Ask HN: What do you expect or hate to see in a job offer decription?
Are you asking why it's a con for me or why these exclusions are there in the first place?

Without getting into politics, due to South Africa's past, businesses are under pressure to appoint employment equity candidates (as defined in http://www.labour.gov.za/DOL/legislation/acts/employment-equ... ) to address the inequities of the past. The short interpretation of this is that white candidates aren't eligible. I understand the reasons, but being white myself, seeing such a statement in an ad is very discouraging. The general concensus is that a company under pressure to correct their numbers would rather not appoint at all rather than appoint a non-EE candidate.

igitur··on Ask HN: The habit adopted in 2016 that had the greatest impact on your health?
White-collar boxing uses the big and "fluffy" 16 ounce gloves. Full head, mouth and groin protection is compulsory. The fights are limited to three 2 minute rounds. The refereeing is extra strict and fights are stopped after the smallest chance of concussion. The benefits far outweigh the risks.

In normal, competitive boxing, the risks are when fighters become dehydrated and sustain concussion, but keep going the full 12 odd rounds.

igitur··on Ask HN: The habit adopted in 2016 that had the greatest impact on your health?
A few things:

I started eating 2 hard boiled eggs (aka arse fruit) each morning. I now don't have a hunger craving at 10am like I used to have and can easily work through to lunch time and have a moderate lunch.

I joined a choir and it helps take my mind off the 9 hours of coding I do every day. It also gives me an outlet for my limited artistic side.

You say besides exercise, but I have to add that I started boxing. We have clubs that specialise in white-collar boxing, which has a lower barrier to entry than normal amateur boxing. I'm not good, but the club is inviting of all levels of talent and it's the best exercise I've ever done. Had my first public fight in March 2016, which was a big psychological hurdle. Nailed it.

igitur··on Ask HN: What is your favorite YouTube channel for developers?
I love that Sirojology moves so fast. It's easier to pause and resume than trying to skip over irrelevant bits like is necessary with most tutorials.
