idoescompooters··on Show HN: Check if your IP has appeared in a residential proxy network
Spur.us is how you can show that these "Residential VPN IPs" are easily identifiable. All of StarVPN's residential IPs are traced back to them easily.
idoescompooters··on Tailcat – Like netcat, but over Tailscale’s data plane
Except the public relays are paywalled...
idoescompooters··on Show HN: nBases – off-market monthly rentals for nomads, direct with the host
A few things:

I selected 29 out of the 37 countries you display at the top of the homepage and none of them had any listings.

This idea has been attempted numerous times before and not a single time did it actually take off as a good idea. One reason is, I cannot find any reason why your listings are better than searching on Airbnb. Not only are the prices not that attractive, but on Airbnb I can still negotiate price and medium/long term if I want plus I get Airbnb support if anything goes wrong. Not only do I get Airbnb support, but the host gets support as well for anything that goes wrong. It's a win-win. The filters for workspace are generally good enough to find the ones with desks/chairs. And once you've found one place, you generally don't need to look much elsewhere unless you're literally hopping country to country frequently which I'm not sure is actually that common for digital nomads (expensive and tiring). The cost of saving from direct booking on the host and digital nomad ends simply doesn't outweigh the benefit of having a professional support/insurance for the rental.

Lastly, you're missing one of the most important parts... internet speeds and stability. Oh and if you think building this out as a tool will explode, it won't... I've tried ;) Everyone is 1000x more interested in how to properly setup their VPN to hide from the employer (which is also something that has been solved already, in multiple ways).

idoescompooters··on The iPhone Upgrade Program is being replaced by Apple Upgrade
Except it's not a higher payment in the end. It's the same as if you just bought it in full, new.
idoescompooters··on Unifi Travel Router
Yeah you're not gonna get a cellular modem under $100 USD. Sorry
idoescompooters··on Show HN: Using YOLO to Detect Office Chairs in 40M Hotel Photos
Hotels all have 30-day maximum stays. And they always use the cheapest bandwidth pool so internet speeds are not good. And it's shared.
idoescompooters··on Show HN: Using YOLO to Detect Office Chairs in 40M Hotel Photos
Unfortunately digital nomads aren't going to be staying in hotels. Maximum 30 days, plus terrible internet.

https://thewirednomad.com is better suited because they are all non-hotels and have verified internet speeds.

idoescompooters··on Show HN: Check Your Network's Ability to Host a VPN Server
Yes, I'm aware of this page and it does not work. I tested using my iPhone hotspot as the internet source and it did not show evidence of CGNAT. Only green dots on the port squares.
idoescompooters··on Show HN: Check Your Network's Ability to Host a VPN Server
It's an educational page.
idoescompooters··on Show HN: Check Your Network's Ability to Host a VPN Server
Unfortunately it's not possible to check for CGNAT via web browser. The only way to is to check the WAN IP directly on your router.
idoescompooters··on Show HN: Check Your Network's Ability to Host a VPN Server
Not at the moment. I understand that is the beauty of icanhazip.com, but I didn't realize my version would be desirable to have this "feature". https://ifconfig.co/json exists though!
idoescompooters··on US may ban TP-Link routers/switches over links to Chinese government
Every single router on the entire market uses chips from three companies based out of the US and Taiwan. If TP-Link has malware in their chips, every other manufacturer does too and the US government probably put it there.

If the concern is software, then just like everyone else is saying, install OpenWRT on it. GL.iNet routers already come with their own version of OpenWRT. You can do the same on those if you don't trust it.

idoescompooters··on Setup a Tailscale VPN and travel the world
A little blog article for beginners who may have a remote job, but never considered traveling because they might be tracked by their employer. Self-hosting a VPN is a way if you’re careful.
idoescompooters··on [dead]
A dedicated website (no Chrome extensions) for digital nomads, or remote workers, to find accommodations with fast, reliable, and verified internet speeds. Crowdsourced data by guests and hosts. Hardware product for periodic speed tests uploaded to The Wired Nomad website available for hosts.

Current supported platforms: Airbnb, Vrbo, Flatio, and NomadStays.

idoescompooters··on Apple TV, now with more Tailscale
This is pretty awesome, but only makes sense if you've already got an AppleTV. The price difference between the Apple TV and a Raspberry Pi is definitely non-negligible. Also, you probably want the Apple TV with ethernet which is extra $$.

Personally, I don't care about TV so I won't be using one anyway.

I recommend the ones where you can text/speak with real natives. Tandem, HelloTalk, Speaky.
idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
Mind adding your Internet details to the site?
idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
I will definitely consider adding hotels as an input option. It's definitely regional for whether I book an Airbnb versus a hotel, but most times for me it is an Airbnb based on the customer support, ratings system, and ease. However, in places like Indonesia, the hotels/resorts are a better deal than most of the Airbnbs which are not that great and have no service.

Nope. "Uncaught (in promise) FirebaseError: Quota exceeded."

I could upgrade the account but I don't understand how much I'd actually get charged.

idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
Hosts don't use it. This is for guests. Crowdsourced data.

HackerNews squeeze of death. OpenCage API key may have also gotten used up.

EDIT: It's back. Upgraded FireBase account

idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
It was Firebase exceeding 50k reads daily limit. I upgraded my account now and it's back.
idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
It got banned... Because the /r/digitalnomad subreddit is so toxic and they claimed I evaded a ban. Long story. Very dumb.

idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
I can speculate one reason Airbnb hasn't/refuses to solve this issue is similar to the reason YouTube got rid of the dislike button. It has the potential to decrease views, and in this case, decrease bookings if things are not good enough.
idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
My About page attempts to explain this a bit. Basically, barely any hosts actually use this feature. And it also doesn't give detailed results. It simply gives you a download speed. Nothing about dropouts or ping. Searching the comments can be hit or miss and laborious. Also, I created this originally to see which Airbnbs had ethernet access to minimize latency as much as possible for the purpose of using a personal VPN back at home as well.
idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
I definitely plan to add some sort of data input for workspace that includes decent criteria (i.e., not a coffee table and wood stool).

Yep, I give the user several different options to post speeds including speedof.me. Contrary to what many might think, different speed test websites function differently and will reveal different types of speeds such as a max (under high load) or best "stable" speed.

The cafe idea is another good one that could be built into this site. Though, as someone who needs the ability to take voice calls, I certainly don't want to try doing that in a public environment. Thanks for your comment!

idoescompooters··on Show HN: A website for remote workers to find Airbnb's with good Internet
Tourism is providing these local economies with money. Shoo-ing away the tourists is not the answer. They are providing significant money into some very bad economies, and in some cases such as resorts, hiring locals and paying them decent wages (I see this in Indonesia). I assure you suburban US does not need your money.
