ideonode··on Colossus: The Forbin Project
The trilogy of books are interesting, but there is some very dubious sexual exploitation as an entirely unnecessary plot point.
ideonode··on The Age of AI has begun
Do you have a reference for that?
ideonode··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
I sympathise. I have a 16in M1 Max, coming from an LG Gram 17. I can't fault the power of it, but the heft isn't ideal for me.

I'd welcome a 15in or 16in Air. The rumour mill suggests a 15in Air is in the works. However, I'm now used to the 120Hz display of the Max, which I suspect wouldn't be an option for the non-pro models...

ideonode··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
Nice to see Dunbar's Number validated with real world data.
ideonode··on Tinycpm – CP/M ON A TINY 2040
Why not just celebrate it for being neat, rather than berate it for not living up to your expectations?

I thougbt it was interesting, and it has inspired me to try something similar on my pico. Especially after rereading Code recently.

Oh, and I assume that tinycpm is because it runs on a Tiny 2040.

ideonode··on Ask HN: What are some of the best books you have read in 2022?
Actually, I read both the first and second editions this year. Was looking forward to the second edition, and preordered.

Sadly, it didn't quite live up to the impact of first book. Whilst it's mainly the same, there are a couple of areas where the pacing is a bit uneven. He has an overlong chapter on creating a clock. And his later chapters on programming in higher languages, with examples in javascript, are not as compelling as the earlier stuff.

ideonode··on Ask HN: What are some of the best books you have read in 2022?
Not sure I personally understand the point you're making. Are reading and deploying to production activities that are mutually exclusive in your life?
ideonode··on Lucene: The Good Parts (2015)
Wasn't the inspiration for Hadoop not just a web crawler use-case, but also Google's famous MapReduce paper?
ideonode··on AWS Redshift Serverless
Athena is more of a wrapper over Presto / Trino than Hive. It does not run map reduce per se over your data - its a SQL engine.
ideonode··on IBM Z/OS v2.5, Next-Gen Operating System Designed for Hybrid Cloud and AI
I remember hearing a story (probably apocryphal) about a mainframe that was so redundant that it had to be physically dismantled and moved from one datacentre to another across town, and did so whilst remaining up the entire time.
ideonode··on A mystery cube, a secret identity, and a puzzle solved after 15 years
Presumably he means the Satoshi in the article. Not sure why GP being downvoted for their evocative reverie of puzzle questing...
ideonode··on Science fiction hasn’t prepared us to imagine machine learning
It's Charles Stross, one of the leading SF writers of the day.
ideonode··on Ask HN: What laptop should I buy in 2021?
I'd second this recommendation, given your price-bracket. My home laptop is a 2020 LG Gram 17 (which I've augmented to 40GB RAM and a 1TB Samsung Evo Plus SSD). The combination of sheer screen real-estate plus incredible lightness makes this a joy to work with. Obviously, it's never going to win in raw performance benchmark comparisons, but I tend to move any significant heavy lifting to cloud anyway.

What makes things easier for me is using it in conjunction with remote VSCode (into either local WSL2 or aforementioned cloud boxes).

Of course, if you're wedded to specific Mac software, then I'd imagine that an M1-based machine will be your only realistic option.

ideonode··on Actions needed to address cybersecurity risks facing the electric grid (2019) [pdf]
There's actually a more recent book, Sandworm, which is specifically about cyberattacks on the power grid (in Ukraine). Recommended.
ideonode··on Italy Joins China's New Silk Road Project
Actually, Peter Frankopan has recently written an even more relevant (though confusingly named) book, The New Silk Roads: The Present and Future of the World, which is precisely about China's Belt and Road initiative and the US (and EU's) lack of pace in keeping up with the scale of China's foreign infrastructure spend.
ideonode··on Show HN: Reddit’s favorite learning books, from 3.5B comments
For 45 minutes a day, I'd recommend the BBC In Our Time podcast, hosted by Melvyn Bragg. Each week, academics talk about a particular topic from the world of science, history, philosophy etc. It's unashamedly high-brow. There's a huge back catalogue as well.
