identity0··on A few kilograms weight loss nearly halves the risk of diabetes?
This mindset is why people find it hard to lose weight. Can't we agree that it's both?
identity0··on Most-mentioned links in Hacker News comments, 2006–2015
I watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM a few days ago and was surprised to see is the #1 youtube link. It does have 11M views, however, and it is a great talk.
identity0··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
Do you actually use that? Maybe it's just because I have few photos, but I always thought it was a massive gimmick. If I wanted to see photos from a specific vacation, I just remember when it happened, or look up the location in the geotagging thing. No ML needed. I've never once wished I could see all my photos of "dog on beach" in one place.
identity0··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I think it was just a google sheet. This obviously goes against google's policies about doxxing.
identity0··on Netflix Targets Critical ‘Cuties’ Tweets with Copyright Takedown Requests
Huh? I never said anything supporting organized religion and I'm not sure how this is relevant. You do realize society can choose an ideological system that doesn't include pedophelia, right? It's not one or the other.
identity0··on Netflix Targets Critical ‘Cuties’ Tweets with Copyright Takedown Requests
I've never seen that movie so I can't guess. Would you tell me?
identity0··on Netflix Targets Critical ‘Cuties’ Tweets with Copyright Takedown Requests
I'll rephrase it for him so it can satisfy your pedantry:

"Except Netflix is using a DMCA takedown request, a legal instrument, to remove the disputed content illegally, because they do not own the copyright to the taken down works."

identity0··on Netflix Targets Critical ‘Cuties’ Tweets with Copyright Takedown Requests
No, wanting to denounce sexualization does not require showing over-sexualisation. It especially doesn't require the film maker doing it herself to these poor actresses. It doesn't matter how "subtle" it is, the movie is part of the problem. It's like making a movie denouncing puppy murders and then the entire movie is just the director shooting puppies. "But don't you get it? How can our movie be bad if it's denouncing bad things?" you may say, oblivious to the fact that this director just created a great movie for puppy-murder enthusiasts.
identity0··on You might not need to store plaintext email addresses
Not sure why you're bringing this up. If you stored them in plaintext it gives hackers 100% of the emails with zero effort required.
identity0··on As a former social media analyst, I'm quitting Twitter
You missed the entire point.
identity0··on C/C++ vs. Rust Performance
> Secondly, the killing feature of C++ is that it is C. If you don't want to use exceptions or RTTI, then you can just switch the features off. Most of C programs can be just compiled with a C++ compiler with very small changes or without any changes at all.

If your C code happens to be compileable with a C++ compiler, then either your program is very small or you are writing really shitty C.

identity0··on That company whose name used to contain HTML script tags Ltd
Try it! Nearly every result is related to BASIC. Search engines have gotten very good at guessing what is and isn't a proper noun over the years.
identity0··on YouTube-dl is now part of GitHub/dmca.git
We haven't gone back to the 2000s, it's always been like this. RIAA and copyright as a whole is and always has been a cancer on society---people may have just forgotten about it in recent times.
identity0··on The Right to Read (1997)
Is-ought, whatever, you defended the practice by citing its "positive" consequences.

> Numerous women have come forward with stories about being sexually harassed by Stallman over the years.

Sources? Not trying to be dismissive, but I can't find any on DDG or Google.

> And of course, he actually did advocate for legalization of child rape earlier in his career.

He never did that. He advocated for child consent. You may think I'm nitpicking but it's an important distinction. Child rape colloquially means unconsentual / forced sex, but technically means any sex since children cannot legally consent. If you say he defends child rape you are colloquially saying he defends unconsentual sex, when he never did such a thing.

identity0··on The Right to Read (1997)
No, he never advocated for "child rape." He advocated for sexual relationships between minors and adults. I find it disgusting, but to say that he supports child rape is simply flat-out wrong, and it is a smear.
identity0··on The Right to Read (1997)
I can't tell if you're for or against the Stallman smear campaign. You can't possibly say that "We live in a post-truth world" and actually think that's a good thing, right?

EDIT: Your other comment makes me thing you're 100% serious about this. The fuck? We need to smear him because he's an awkward nerd? An awkward person is not inherently harmful simply for being awkward. What harm has he "continually done" to deserve this?

identity0··on Cargo-style dependency management for C, C++ and other languages with Meson
?? You're telling me C++ devs don't use libraries?
identity0··on Discord Desktop App RCE
> Especially since unlike MS Word where people pay money for the product Discord's product is the user

I wish people would stop touting this. Just because you pay for it doesn't mean you aren't being tracked. I would say MS Word is considerably worse because you have to pay for it and it still tracks you.

identity0··on Discord Desktop App RCE
This just in: proprietary app is proprietary.

How is this at all surprising? Any non-open source program can do everything you just listen and more. Discord may have been dumb for naming their analytics request point "/track" but that doesn't make them worse than anyone else. I wouldn't be surprised if Word sent every button press to Microsoft. And besides, all the chat data is stored on their servers anyways, so it's not like they get a whole bunch of new data through this.

identity0··on Signs Your Story Is Classist
It's pretty clear the viewpoint is "any negative depiction of poor people is bad," and more broadly, "class divide exists and is significant."
identity0··on Signs Your Story Is Classist
This article is ridiculous.

1. Many homeless people are insane. Not all, and it is more represented in TV than in real life, but it is still true. I guess it's kind of a shame that media doesn't represent homeless people better, but tropes do come partially from truth. And come on, a "thinking brain dog" is pretty funny.

2. No one wants to tune into a noir PI show and watch struggles to pay the bills and roommate drama. And don't be ridiculous, there are tons of shows that show people living in shitty conditions.

3. This point makes me think the article is satire. Seriously? It's "classist" to kill stormtroopers since they're probably just "low-middle income people making ends meet?"

4. I'm guessing this show is based off the middle ages, where commoners literally did have lice and rotting teeth. Don't forsake realism for 21st century ideals of "anti-classism."

5. This has to be a joke too. The reason collective action is "villainized" in those stories is because it went too far. Protesting is fine and whatever, but if you're causing destruction then obviously your protest movement should be villainized. It's not classist.

identity0··on Principles of Data Oriented Programming
This is exactly the reason C++ was created. It has structs and classes. In theory, structs and classes are exactly the same, but conventionally, a struct represents some kind of data object while a class represents something with encapsulation and state.
identity0··on Face retouching settings should be off by default
This seems like saving Android's brand by Google. I don't know about anyone else, but the on-by-default face retouch on my old samsung phone looks horrible. It makes my face look like melted plastic and makes the lens extremely blurry. A Samsung camera could have a million megapixels or whatever and it would still look like crap because of the filter, and it makes it seem like all android phones have garbage front cameras.
identity0··on Bringing the browser developer tools to Visual Studio Code
Isn't VS Code literally written in Electron? It would be the easiest thing to implement.
identity0··on Tips for immersive video calls
All these problems come from these video call services trying to serve a million masters. If you're in a meeting it might be nice to have a big red X while you're muted, but it's distracting in an online class when you're always muted. If you're in a class or doing a demonstration you might always want to see the screen, but if you're doing a presentation you may want to see both the face and the screen. How many people should you show while someone is sharing their screen? In my online class I would say 0, and in my meetings I would say everybody.
identity0··on Minecraft's “Pack.png” Seed Reversal Methodology
Had this never happened, all those GPUs would have spend many long nights doing nothing. Gamers have a disproportionate number of powerful PCs, and the people that contributed their GPUs did it out of love for the game, not for some greater societal good.
identity0··on Throw away code
> It's strict, yes, but most of that strictness helps with eliminating the types of errors that make your app break over and over again at runtime.

Really? Most throwaway-script errors I get are simple things like IO mistakes, mistyped URL, or logic errors. The rust borrow checker is not designed to catch simple mistakes, it's designed for massive multi-threaded applications, e.g. making sure threads access data safely, making sure a variable doesn't get unexpectedly modified by some other file, making sure memory is owned by exactly one place, etc. But in a single-threaded garbage collected script that can fit on your monitor, why should you care? The borrow checker does not check for logic errors; it checks for the things you don't care about.
