ideals··on How satellite ‘megaconstellations’ will photobomb astronomy images
Due to ITAR regulations SpaceX and Amazon couldn't do it anywhere else either.
ideals··on Facebook chose not to act on militia complaints before Kenosha shooting
He isn't old enough to carry a firearm so by open carrying the weapon he already committed a felony.

By crossing from Illinois into Wisconsin with a firearm he was not legally allowed to carry he committed a felon.

Self defense is not likely a position which will apply here.

ideals··on Boom Supersonic hopes to test-fly its supersonic plane in 2021
This is a similar argument now being made against Starlink and similar satellite constellations.

Surprised no one has made the crossover argument wrt supersonic travel.

ideals··on SATCON1 Report on Impact of Satellite Constellations on Astronomy
But that's not true. I've watched the Starlink satellites go by at night with my own eyes. No telescope, just standing in my backyard, there's even websites which tell you the time and direction to look.
ideals··on New facts about the leadup to the Beirut explosion
TFA also mentioned the Mozambique explosives company buying it had links to Hezbollah but I'm guessing a lot of people didn't read the article, which is too bad, it's a really good article.
ideals··on New facts about the leadup to the Beirut explosion
Is it finger pointing, or just unravelling a story to find where it leads and connects to? I got the impression of the latter.
ideals··on SATCON1 Report on Impact of Satellite Constellations on Astronomy
Follow on comment, what are indigenous tribes who aren't part of our connected world going to interpret this change as? I'm thinking about groups of people like the Sentinelese.
ideals··on SATCON1 Report on Impact of Satellite Constellations on Astronomy
What are going to be the cultural effects of having a constant stream of satellites wizzing around the night sky?

I've sat here for a few minutes thinking selfishly about never being able to experience Alaska wilderness on a clear night. Or late night stroll on a beach looking up, etc, etc forever about all kinds of personal moments that will never be the same.

However there's billions of people who have no idea what Starlink or Kuiper are that are going to find out the hard way when they no longer have that same night sky either.

I hadn't really thought about it much before because it was always framed as an astronomy problem, but it's really a whole Earth's peoples problem.

> The initial certifications include the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc. (FINRA) Licensed General Securities Representative (Series 7), Licensed Investment Adviser Representative (Series 65), and Licensed Private Securities Offerings Representative (Series 82) certifications.

These are the qualifying certs to be eligible under the new guidelines. To take one of those exams to get the cert you also need to meet this req,

> Candidates must be associated with and sponsored by a FINRA member firm or other applicable self-regulatory organization (SRO) member firm to be eligible to take FINRA representative-level qualification exams.

Ya but those are "the good guys" so it's ok to spy on citizens.

Quite the gulp of koolaid to swallow straight faced

ideals··on The wildest insurance fraud scheme in Texas
Well MLM scams are alive and well today and have been coming out of Utah for the last 20 years so I'd say fraud is pretty common. Check Craigslist for some fun frauds and scams, they're right out in the open. Social media are open markets for fraud too
ideals··on Ask HN: There are 5 S-1 posts on the front page, what explains the rush?
If all of these companies are rushing in to get some of dumb money (probably not the correct phrase for this) floating around would it also mean these companies aren't worth investing in?

Do you know if you earn more than your colleagues? If so, is this because of your negotiating skills?

And you're still protecting them even after they admitted to fraud!

This is in response to someone saying we need to look out for each other. Our fellow devs and employees.

Y'all need to stop being so nice. Your founder isn't. You need to stop trying to play fair, your founder isn't. You need to put the people you work with on a higher level than your founder and get over this appeal to authority.

ideals··on Notes from a Flat Earth Conference
I judge people (not solely) based on who they choose to associate with, so for me ya it is bad. To put it more bluntly, if you surround yourself with shitty people, I'll assume you're a shitty person.
ideals··on California bullet train contractors botched bridge project
Seattle had to close one of its largest and busiest bridges this year without notice due to potentially immenent collapse. The bridge was finished in 1984 and was supposed to last 100 years.

Apparently we haven't been good at building bridges for a long time.

ideals··on Beta users of Starlink get downloads of 11 to 60 Mbps
I saw someone in this thread mention hacking a 4g tablet plan to work as modem doing a sim swap. You could possibly do something similar by setting up 2 or 3 separate accounts so have individual data caps on each and cycle through them each month. It sounds like a hassle but could save you enough to be worth it
ideals··on Beta users of Starlink get downloads of 11 to 60 Mbps
In KC you used to be able to get free Google Fiber at 10mbps. Free as in beer.

I never needed anything better than that to watch Netflix or program or enjoy basic internet browsering. It was awesome!

To get that out in a rural area and have it reliable is a game changer for a lot of people.

ideals··on Uber and Lyft ordered by California judge to classify drivers as employees
There is a very similar thing happening with UFC fighters. There are currently class action lawsuits ongoing for this topic.

I wonder how this decision will play out to other businesses

ideals··on Debt collector profits soar with people flush and easy to find
Cherry Street Coffee in Seattle (local chain) did the same but a bit more brash.

They sent out texts to all employees after having no contact with them saying you must come back to work now or we will report it as refusal and also never allow those people to be eligible for employment again. No concern for people who may have already found new employment since the company abruptly laid them all off, you don't come back and you can never come back. Forced loyalists is a weird strat

ideals··on Ask HN: What are the least competitive consumer and enterprise markets?
Since I made this comment yesterday I've thought it about it. lot more. I did some more research and discovered there is a franchise!! around sidewalk repairs exploiting ADA requirements from schools, govt buildings, etc type places that have to maintain compliance.

So the comments referring to this being a shake down are pretty much on point. I mean it isn't much of a surprise.

There's real value to what this service offers, people do want to fix mangled sidewalks, but the shakedown side of the business is where the money is at unfortunately (or not depending on your morals).

Also I was off on the costs, in the email it said there were 2 spots affected and the estimate was $280!! It took the guy ~2 days to do the whole neighborhood, each section took maybe 15mins at what looked like a comfortable pace. So the $/hr is very high.

food for thought
