iconfinder··on Dave McClure’s 500 Startups Chooses 33 Companies; Bets Big On International
In general you shouldn't write off any of the startups in incubators after one month - especially not in 500 startups and YC where there are many talented teams applying and good screening processes.
iconfinder··on Dave McClure’s 500 Startups Chooses 33 Companies; Bets Big On International
Yes, we get a lot out of an incubator. We're funded by a Danish VC and our HQ is in Copenhagen, Denmark. By joining 500 Startups, we'll get a chance to build a network in Silicon Valley and meet mentors like Andrew Chen, Hiten Shah and of course Dave McClure. And just like the rest of the batch, it gives us a four month period of intense focus on product development.
iconfinder··on Discover the best Electronic Dance Music you probably have never heard of
Dubstep, DnB, house ... Why only these 3 genres, most of the top djs (http://www.djmag.com/top100) play trance, deep trance and electro. Seems like a weird choice to me.

And probably also beyond a lot of Hacker News readers' technical ability.

Awesome poster. Please put it up for sale somewhere!

This attitude: "who bothers at that age?"
iconfinder··on Is Berlin the new home for tech start-up business? [video]
It was very popular - I think students chose between french, german and spanish. And it was pretty much 33% for each language.

"which no one studies in school"

In Denmark we can select German classes in both elementary and high school.

iconfinder··on In Denmark, Pedaling to Work on a Superhighway
As a Dane and living in Copenhagen, this is what I miss everytime I'm in another city (except Amsterdam perhaps). I love how there are bike lanes all over the place. We also have traffic lights for bikes that let's you get ahead of the cars.

iconfinder··on How to plan for Y Combinator interview
I still don't like that specific idea, but I regret trying to defend our idea during the interview. I think they test the teams by suggesting different ideas to see how we react to new things. The more open you are to new ideas, the better. Just like Reddit, the team came to Y-combinator with totally different idea. So I think it's very important to be open and positive to th ideas bring up during the interview - because if they like you (but not your idea), you can very well be working on theirs instead.
iconfinder··on How to plan for Y Combinator interview
We got rejected as well after travelling all the way from Denmark. We landed saturday afternoon and got to the interview sunday morning and took the plane home sunday afternoon. We didn't even reach a point where we had jetlag.

I think one of the reasons we got rejected was our response to some of Paul Graham's suggestions. One of them was to expand the concept to include game characters (Iconfinder is currently an icon search engine). We didn't respond to his idea in a positive way but instead defended icons as a large enough niche to build a initial service people would pay for.

iconfinder··on Time to panic
Great post, Nick!

I really think this whole case is badly handle by LinkedIn - both in terms of storing the passwords and the PR when the leak was made.

iconfinder··on The New Twitter Logo in CSS
No, my OCD going nuts as well.
iconfinder··on Danish Iconfinder Raises $1.5 Million
I'm not 100% sure how the users find it initially, but about 25% of total traffic is from Google now - many come via Image search. Thanks!
iconfinder··on Danish Iconfinder Raises $1.5 Million
I think the most important part of growing was focusing on high quality content. 50% of the visitors are entering iconfinder.com in the browser or clicking a bookmark. The site has grown because it was recommended by the existing users. The user base is homogenic (web designers and developers) who often work together in teams and therefore talk a lot together.

It was only recently (2010-2011) I started really focusing on SEO.

iconfinder··on Danish Iconfinder Raises $1.5 Million
I think you have to think about icons in more broad terms ranging from a generic symbol database (used by designers to find good metaphors for their own icons) to graphics used in presentations. The use cases for small well-designed symbols are plenty.
iconfinder··on Old People Icons That Don't Make Sense Anymore
"2) icon design business is going to profit."

Yeah!

iconfinder··on Zerg Rush Google Easter Egg
"I'm so old that I remember the first Starcraft game"

I remember when Dune 2 came out - the father of all RTS games.

iconfinder··on Google+ gets a redesign
"It's an adage in UX that when you see an interface that asks the user to customize the layout, it means the designers gave up trying to find the right solution themselves."

It's always depends on the app. If you have a tool where you primarily have heavy users e.g. a programmer's IDE - then customization makes sense. But in the case of Google+ I don't see the point either - it just adds extra complexity.

iconfinder··on Poll: What's Your Most Disliked Programming Language?
I don't see how we can use this poll without knowing what languages people have tried. E.g. how would you compare 200 votes for php vs. 5 votes for assembly when there are many more PHP-developers than assembly-developers.
iconfinder··on Newspapers Lose $10 Dollars in Print for Every $1 Gained Online
This is what happens when supply goes up. It's really hard to feel bad for them.
iconfinder··on Paul Graham PyCon 2012 keynote
Including the last one where Paul corrected the comment about Gmail being slow.
iconfinder··on Killing Your Startup By Listening to Customers
Customers tend to ask for features that makes the product incrementally better and often stuff that is visible e.g. "A button that does X". They don't ask for "better usability" or "performance improvements" unless it is very bad. Also, I have never heard any users asking for a feature to be removed (even though it might make the product better).
iconfinder··on Yandex, Google’s Russian Rival, Is Twitter’s New Real-Time Search Partner
I'm not so sure. Wikipedia doesn't show it as a disambiguation for the continent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EU_(disambiguation)
iconfinder··on Yandex, Google’s Russian Rival, Is Twitter’s New Real-Time Search Partner
"Europe" would be correct. EU is wrong since it's the economic and political union.
iconfinder··on Yandex, Google’s Russian Rival, Is Twitter’s New Real-Time Search Partner
But it's no the same as the European Union which is the economic and political union. The correct label would be "Europe".
