icehawk··on Air Traffic Control
Given the fact that I went from +3 to -2, for a very factual statement (the standard deviation of comments on the front page at the time was 65.0) yeah.
icehawk··on Air Traffic Control
Given the previous discussion on that very thread has 703 comments, your, "I don't think there's any debate that [...] and the FAA really did blow up its hiring pipeline to further DEI goals" is pretty provably false.
icehawk··on How many supernova explode every year?
1/2 as common. https://astrobites.org/2022/04/16/template-post-9/#:~:text=T...
icehawk··on Wait. HOW MANY supernova explode every year?
So only 0.12% of all main sequence stars, have the mass that can become the most common type of supernova, and they apparently only last for about 100 million years.
icehawk··on Restructuring Announcement
If they're running the business, and it's at a point where it needs layoffs; sounds like they're not doing their job properly, and should be replaced with people who can-- like every other position in the business.

Not that they will-- too much self-interest.

icehawk··on Things I Won't Work With: Dioxygen Difluoride (2010)
High test peroxide is used as a rocket monopropellant, and was involved with the loss of the submarines HMS Sidon and Kursk.
icehawk··on The Internet Slum: is abandoning the Internet the next big thing? (2004)
You don't always have to optimize for smart.

Using coins or credit card is a far better experience downloading an app.

icehawk··on The Internet Slum: is abandoning the Internet the next big thing? (2004)
Requiring an app to park my car is beyond stupid.
icehawk··on Global coffee trade grinding to a halt, hit hard by brutal price hikes
Is it? How?
icehawk··on The DOJ still wants Google to sell off Chrome
What's the issue here?
icehawk··on Ask HN: How did the internet discover my subdomain?
This.

I have a DNS client that feeds into my passive DNS database by reading CT logs and then trying to resolve them.

icehawk··on Docker limits unauthenticated pulls to 10/HR/IP from Docker Hub, from March 1
This sounds like its only talking about authenticated pulls:

> We’re introducing image pull and storage limits for Docker Hub. This will impact less than 3% of accounts, the highest commercial consumers. For many of our Docker Team and Docker Business customers with Service Accounts, the new higher image pull limits will eliminate previously incurred fees.

icehawk··on IPv6 Is Hard
Only if you trust your ISP:

icehawk··on Cleveland police used AI to justify a search warrant. It derailed a murder case
It's not a 'technicality.' The person got off because the police didn't do their job.

Nobody else calls not doing your job right a 'technicality.'

icehawk··on New electrical code could doom most common EV charging
> 2) the PSU on my PC started tripping the AFCI (sent back to the manufacturer and got a replacement).

That's a common occurrence with an AFCI breaker and a switched mode power supply.

In my last apartment, I had multiple AFCI breakers nuisance trip with multiple PC power supplies, usually when the GPU has heavy usage.

Eventually I "solved" it by getting a double conversion UPS.

icehawk··on Authors seek Meta's torrent client logs and seeding data in AI piracy probe
Those are both copyright infringement, sice we already have MAI Systems Corp. v. Peak Computer, Inc.

I'd like to see them try to argue Cartoon Network, LP v. CSC Holdings, Inc. applies to their corpus.

icehawk··on Why do bees die when they sting you? (2021)
> The connection graph between "They survive because they're the fittest" and "They must be the fittest because they survive" is just a circle disconnected from all other knowledge.

The GP said that bees survived because they're "fit enough" not that they survive because they're "the fittest" and there are definitely species that don't seem to be surviving because they're not fit enough.

icehawk··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
Yes, last 10% goes up the chimney, so only 0.9W goes into the house.
icehawk··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
> So cooling a living space is always more costly than heating a living space. Simply because all the waste energy created by people living in the space reduces the total heating requirement of the space, but equally increases the cooling requirement of that same space.

This simply is not true for a furnace or electric resistive heat.

My furnace produces 0.9W of heat for every 1W of energy input. More efficient ones do 0.98, the best you get with electric resistive heat is 1W.

On the other hand my air conditioner moves 3.5W of heat outside for every 1W of energy input.

icehawk··on I have made the decision to disband Hindenburg Research
Honestly? That feels like a more genuine explanation. Business say they reasons for doing things, but I've not seen a high level decision maker that isn't eventually just "going with his gut."

At least they're honest here.

icehawk··on OpenAI's bot crushed this seven-person company's web site 'like a DDoS attack'
> although the article mentions tens/hundreds of thousands of requests, they don't say anything about them being made unreasonably quickly.

It's the first sentence of the article.

On Saturday, Triplegangers CEO Oleksandr Tomchuk was alerted that his company’s e-commerce site was down.

If a scraper is making enough requests to take someone else's website down, the scraper's requests are being made unreasonably quickly.

icehawk··on Germans turn to balcony solar panels to save money
> If Joe Random decides to send his solar power directly into the depowered grid, that would be a Bad Time for the worker involved.

You need a special inverter for it to not blow up when the grid is running, and even the cheap $80 grid tie inverters on amazon do this sort of checking before activating.

icehawk··on Doomsday Book (2006) [pdf]
> The banking system printed every dollar out of thin air[...]

What banking system doesn't do this?

Ones with steps in between don't count.

icehawk··on Ads chew through half of mobile data
That I like this forum, and just have not found a better alternative, is certainly an assumption you're making.
icehawk··on Ads chew through half of mobile data
Not really sure how you come to the conclusion those are all valuable things.
icehawk··on Ads chew through half of mobile data
The internet as I know it is the value I get out of interacting with other people.

I've never had a moment where I've said "Oh, I'm glad that ad was there!"

If a service can't be run unless it's through ads?

Then perish.

icehawk··on US newspapers are deleting old crime stories, offering subjects a 'clean slate'
Have you ever tried to find the things you said on a forum when you were a teenager?

Every time I do this, most of the stuff I did 20 years ago is outright gone, and it always ends in disappointment-- and I have material info on where and what it should be.

icehawk··on Combining 15s interval whole-sky-camera photos to form a 4y spanning keogram
This post? https://astrodon.social/@cgbassa/113770444896606353

That's the moon, and it looks like it's increasing cloud cover + dawn causing camera to decrease overall exposure.

icehawk··on Intel's $475M error: the silicon behind the Pentium division bug
I was about to ask if the explanation of floating point numbers was using Avogadro's number on purpose, but then I realized the other number was Planck's constant.
icehawk··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
Nobody responding seriously to this because you seem to have missed the part where GP said "with noise added to make it irreversible" and the third sentence in that wikipedia article.
