icedchocolate··on A DIY ‘bionic pancreas’ is changing diabetes care
My biggest fear around this is that these solutions incentivise the biggest pharma companies to stop researching actual cures. I don’t want to have to deal with these devices, I just want it dealt with.
icedchocolate··on Steelmanning: Discover the truth by helping your opponent
I couldn’t agree more, well said
icedchocolate··on The Twitter Ranking Algorithm
1000%, recommendation algorithms inevitably maximise for emotional reactions, promoting polarisation and negativity.
icedchocolate··on Things I can’t do on macOS which I can do on Ubuntu (2020)
I am literally never able to install my household name desktop apps that I use daily on Mac, when I try Ubuntu, without the thing crashing my whole computer. It’s insane.
icedchocolate··on Google, Meta, others will have to explain algorithms under new EU legislation
This opinion is terrifying to me. Why has our culture become so authoritarian?
icedchocolate··on Show HN: Split Keyboards Gallery
They are (almost?) all configurable using QMK, custom firmware or even Via :)
icedchocolate··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
Speaking from Australia, we have outstanding customer protection and rights, and no massive hoops or hurdles to go to get it that would be more significant than anything in the US. It’s really much more just. Fraud or improper charges are also easily immediately rescinded if using a credit card. What kind of cover for fees for international use are you talking about?
icedchocolate··on Why Working from Home Will Stick [pdf]
The commenter wasn’t talking about all people having to work at the office all of the time, merely that fully remote was not good and not favoured by young engineers. And he was spot on. I’m a young engineer in my 20s and if I don’t get in-person training soon (I started over a year ago and haven’t gotten any since we’ve been remote the entire time), I’m going to quit and go elsewhere. This is in spite of working in the best team of engineers in my city, working on an awesome problem. But I can’t sacrifice my career for their desire to work from home.
icedchocolate··on Facebook shuts down the Socialist Workers Party in Britain
I’m shocked that people are surprised that censorship escalates. This is the natural consequence. Censorship should be restricted to calls for, threats of or plans of violence, that’s it. And maybe denial of well-documented genocides. Does anyone know any other easy, clear cut, lines in the sand?
icedchocolate··on Apple Announces App Store Small Business Program
Greed. Pure, unadulterated, unjustified greed. Why should Apple get 15%? It’s just disgusting.
icedchocolate··on Are you an anarchist? The answer may surprise you (2000)
“ Anarchists are simply people who believe human beings are capable of behaving in a reasonable fashion without having to be forced to. “

Lol you lost me immediately. This is essentially pretending anti-vaccers and other groups of people just don’t exist. Just because you’re in a bubble of educated, reasonable people, doesn’t mean everyone is like that, sadly.

icedchocolate··on Facebook to block news on Australian sites after new law, riling lawmakers
If you get your news from Facebook, you’re doing it wrong.
icedchocolate··on Facebook to block news on Australian sites after new law, riling lawmakers
No they don’t, they only have to provide details of why they downranked the website if they do so. This is to avoid them intentionally downranking the papers to hurt them. Stop spreading lies.
icedchocolate··on Facebook to block news on Australian sites after new law, riling lawmakers
Lol this is just not true. Fairfax, for example, will be completely fine. You’re honestly pushing a lobbyist’s narrative. Small papers don’t rely on Facebook click throughs.
icedchocolate··on Facebook to block news on Australian sites after new law, riling lawmakers
Exactly, “on a part of the digital platform service that is set up and able to be edited by the registered news business“, i.e. on the news site’s own personal page, which is already possible.
icedchocolate··on Facebook to block news on Australian sites after new law, riling lawmakers
As an Australian, this is fantastic. Why should Facebook and Google get to show news content for free? The only people unhappy about this, from what I have seen, are Facebook and Google. Big tech bullies, having a sook with their lobbyists and website warnings. Good riddance.
icedchocolate··on Being OK with not being extraordinary
Feels like the author is catching on to the realisations outlined here:

icedchocolate··on Restaurants rebel against delivery apps as cities crack down on fees
The fees some of these apps charge is criminal. You’re an advertising and coordination company, do you really deserve a huge percentage per order? Gross.
icedchocolate··on How to Avoid the Assignment Statement (2010)
“Declare New Variables... I see two possible reasons why one would want to do it the "wrong" way: efficiency, and conciseness.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this plain wrong? You are increasing the memory required for your program to run, and if the data saved to those variables are sufficiently large you can run into memory issues this way.

icedchocolate··on Zotonic: An Erlang Web Framework
Why do people program new projects in Erlang as opposed to Elixir? Especially when it’s a web project and Elixir has Phoenix?
icedchocolate··on Police hijack a botnet and remotely kill 850k malware infections
This headline is misleading. Avast did the work. The police just gave the necessary legal approval.
icedchocolate··on IEEE, a major science publisher, bans Huawei scientists from reviewing papers
The consequences of installing spyware on your devices and trying to spy on the US.
icedchocolate··on Apple Cancels AirPower Product
Not sure I agree. AirPods really have almost no distinguishing features from other earphones. They’re generally worse. The only “feature” is seeing their charge on your phone, which is a pretty lousy differentiator.
icedchocolate··on So you want your app/website to work in China
Honestly, I wouldn’t make it available in China. I want to give them a reason to take that firewall down. I don’t want to make the prison that their government has turned their country into, a sustainable one.
icedchocolate··on At $75K, housing a prisoner in California now costs more than a year at Harvard
Re: Healthcare, that’s not true. The US spends more on health care per capita than many systems with free healthcare (Australia, UK, Canada). You pay the most and receive the least. Like the previous commenter, I am increasingly surprised that this system is still supported, instead of one that costs less and provides more (e.g. the fact that states bargain with drug companies individually, rather than federally, means you pay much more for drugs).
icedchocolate··on How to earn your macroeconomics and finance white belt as a software developer
To add to the resources in this thread, the book sitting on my bookshelf that I used for Derivatives at uni (options & futures, hedging, swaps, etc.) is Fundamentals of Futures and Options Markets, but John C. Hull
icedchocolate··on How to earn your macroeconomics and finance white belt as a software developer
Most important thing to know about economics, from Mankiw & studying economics both at school and uni: (1) Resources are limited, but our desire is unlimited. The function of the market is to find the equilibrium amount of each thing to produce, at a certain price. Also, there is always a market, even if money is totally removed. We will always have things to divide up between us. (2) The demand/supply curve. It honestly is unbelievably important and you won’t understand the fundamentals until you understand this, imo. Marx didn’t understand the economy because he didn’t understand this, he only understood the supply part of the equation (a friend who took the history of economic thought & passed his notes onto me taught me this). Practice using this to understand a government policy that impacts the market, think through what it does to prices, volumes, and the curves themselves.

Basic accounting concepts and terminology is also quite useful, as another commenter said. Then the function of the central banks, why they do what they do, and how.

I do recommend, to understand the GFC, Reading “Financial Accounting Theory”, by William R. Scott, pages 9-15 (section 1.3). If you want to understand dodgy accounting, this is also a good book. Aside from Mankiw’s principles of Microeconomics, Bernanke’s Principles of Macroeconomics is also good.

icedchocolate··on Snap Inc. S-1
Sales & Marketing expense was $124M, they spent ~$9M on advertising, so ~$115M on sales and marketing, and $183M on R&D (engineering).

So about 61:39, eng:sales, if you were to assume wages were equal, on average.

icedchocolate··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Honestly Brexit and Trump both tell me that democracy doesn't work, because the majority of the population is undereducated, bigoted, and has absolutely no idea about how to run an economy - it makes no sense for the working class who don't understand the most basic of economic concepts to influence how the economy is run.

I hope he doesn't screw America's economy by preventing skilled immigrants coming in and helping the tech industry, and by screwing up America's free trade deals. The return of protectionist & economically idiotic policy could truly screw the US.
