ice109··on John Scalzi: Being Poor (2005)
congrats on being an unempathetic ubermensch. I'm sure that's worth a lot.
ice109··on The Problem with F# Evangelism
that kind of thing is a collosal mistake in my opinion - just on the face of it I/o at compile time seems very wrong.

ice109··on Porting 4.5K lines of C to Go
too bad sometimes it doesn't resolve pointers correctly

the arxiv tip is a very good one indeed

>i look forward to the day when people just stop trying to correlate everything both positive and negative to race, gender, age, and any other attribute other than "are you a good person" and "can you do this job well"

completely abstracted of the rest of history maybe that'd be possible. the problem is that black people in antebellum south were prevented from learning to read. so really it went something like: let's not teach black to read and then require literacy in order to vote.

>oh well. requiring literacy for something as important as an election is not obstructionist, IMHO

i would gladly wager that an overwhelming majority of voters don't read more than 10,000 words about any given election and get most of their data from television/radio/speech. so tell me why literacy is of paramount importance?

are you like totally ignorant of how literary tests (and poll taxes) were used to disenfranchise minorities
ice109··on Ask HN: Does a fledging startup need AWS
I've done a fair amount of "command line" ops so I'm comfortable with it but the question what will migration be like when we do move to an iaas?
ice109··on Ask HN: Does a fledging startup need AWS
maybe mvp isn't there right word. we have demos we've developed locally and we're going to start pilots.
ice109··on I’ve Had a Cyberstalker Since I Was 12 (2016)
cited research aside this is asinine. let's pretend we could regress "did smile" on "genetics" and "culture" and inspected the coefficients of the covariates (i.e. investigate treatment effect). we would find that the effect of culture was much much much stronger than genetics.
ice109··on China Is Engineering Genius Babies (2013)
this doesn't really mean anything? you would find similarly high iq people around anyone with the power and the money to acquire them.

ice109··on Raising a Truly Bilingual Child
I speak shit Spanish (very weak third language) and even I can get the gist of what they're talking about. I'll admit all the stuff around the rolling rs is very hard to make out though.
ice109··on Raising a Truly Bilingual Child
I don't understand this. as long as it's obvious that you're multilingual people don't hold it against you when you make mistakes. on the other hand I have a friend whose bilingual with no accent in English and has trouble some times. people must think there's something wrong with him.
ice109··on Should Go 2.0 support generics?
one annoying thing about go error handling aside from the copious `if err != nil` statements is that if someone somewhere doesn't handle an error there's no way to find! yes I know about errorcheck or whatever that library is called but I think it's silly you'd leave something like that up to a library.
ice109··on More Good Programming Quotes (2016)
this is like 90% `data` and `case`. show me a language where type declaration and case statements aren't readable.

is this a trick or is geolocation on iPhones better than the 5m typically quoted.
ice109··on Hedge Fund Uses Algae to Reap 21% Return
I don't understand why 100 mil aum is different from 1 bill aum. couldn't you just divide the billion amongst 10 groups that are Chinese walled from each other? then there'd be no problems of market moving or depth or anything.
ice109··on Hedge Fund Uses Algae to Reap 21% Return
I asked derman what an alternative would be to the formal models quants use now and his answer was that the whole thing should just be left up to "smart people and their gut instincts". the problem is that as soon as these smart people's gut instincts fail (which they will) and they try to investigate why you'll be right back to formal models. derman strikes me as just a guy trying to sell books.

this kind of thinking is just another iteration of self-serving anti-intellectualism (akin to climate change denial and anti-vaxxing). there is absolutely hard exercise science you can read in order to exercise more effectively than "stretching" (an activity whose value has never been empirically proven) and "body-weight" exercises (slightly more effective than nothing but pales in comparison to real weight training and cardio). protein supplementing does work[1], creatine does work[2], caffeine+ephedrine does work[3] (though you can't buy that anymore). the hard science is in exactly the same place it always is: research journals. for starters I always recommended exrx.net.

ice109··on What makes maths beautiful?
I got pretty far in math (ms in cs with half of the classes being legit math classes) I never got the obsession either. in general it always felt to me like a bunch of awkward people trying to ascribe aesthetic value to something that had none. it also always felt self-aggrandizing: here look at how beautiful is this game I play where I made up the rules.

edit: down votes on hn without comments? boo
