icarus127··on The Next Step in Apple's Thermonuclear War Against Android
Do you think Samsung's 3G patents cost Apple as much as they want charge Samsung for rounded corners?
icarus127··on Apple loses patent claim against Samsung in Tokyo court

Gooterola (Moogle?) clearly is abusing FRAND obligations
on some of their standards-essential patents. As far as I
can tell, Samsung is trying to abuse some of their FRAND
  standards-essential patents, too.
This is probably true but looks a lot like of case of "when someone attacks you reach for whatever is at hand". Samsung and Motorola clearly believe that those patents are the best thing they've got to counter Apple's attacks. Unfortunately it seems that because those patents are standards-essential Apple's absurd patents have more legal power than patents that are actually interesting.

And it has also been said before that addressing subsequent questions _without_ answering that one probably changed the approach to subsequent questions.
icarus127··on Apple Rejects App That Tracks U.S. Drone Strikes

How is that App used? Imagine being at launch and you get
a new notification. What do you do with that kind of
Information? Why do you want that?
I for one would want that because we're so separated from our actions that even those of us who are appalled by it don't think about it daily. I say _our_ because we as a people could put the screws to our government if enough of us actually cared. As to what you do with it, I think the intent is to start a conversation then and there. Tell other people what just happened, tell them to install the app. If that happens enough times I think it might jar something loose in the social consciousness.

It sounds better than sticking my head in the sand and pretending it's not happening. As for being desensitized, are you serious? _That's_ your argument against raising awareness of drone strikes? We're already desensitized to the violence we perpetrate on others. It doesn't even make the news if it has to compete with the latest celebrity gossip.

icarus127··on Firefox 15 available to download, finally fixes add-on memory leak
I second this. On Ubuntu 12.04 Unity crashes after approximately 20 days of uptime and that's Almost the only time I restart Firefox. I regularly have a single session open for weeks.
icarus127··on Firefox 15 available to download, finally fixes add-on memory leak
This always puzzles me too. I start firefox maybe twice a week across 2 or 3 machines, then just let it run until an OS update requires a reboot (or in some cases when it's using > 1.5G of memory which is rare and may stop once I upgrade to ff15).
icarus127··on IBM patents runtime code replacement in web applications
As a programmer you're going to have a hard time convincing me that it's not.
icarus127··on Google's formula to retain women: Longer maternity leave
As some people have pointed out this is a bit of a simplistic analysis, but I find it encouraging that Google is doing this. The state of Maternity leave in the U.S. is frankly appalling. My wife (a nurse) is currently pregnant and her Maternity 'leave' is 8 weeks. She is _required_ to burn all but one week of her vacation time as well as all her sick leave. After that it's unpaid and if she were to stay on her employer's insurance we would have to pay for it out of pocket for the remaining duration of the leave.

Fortunately I have good insurance but this seems incredibly bizarre to me. Nurse's are already overworked. Long story short, when I see a high profile company treating pregnant mothers better it only makes me happy.

icarus127··on I just left 200 fake parking tickets at YC Demo Day...
I would find this pretty annoying personally. Not only that but this is how the pizza joint around the corner advertises(literally). Is that really the feel you want?
icarus127··on A Generation Lost in the Bazaar
The point isn't an appeal to authority, it's that the author is a supporter of open source. Not Microsoft.
icarus127··on Planetary Annihilation - A Next Generation RTS by Uber Entertainment Inc
That's a great idea for kickstarter projects like this.
icarus127··on Steam Expands Beyond Games
I agree this makes a lot of sense from a Microsoft perspective, not so sure it makes sense from a Valve perspective. AFAIK it's still a privately held company, Gabe & company seem forward thinking eneough that I could see them telling Microsoft to take a hike no matter the offering price.
icarus127··on GNOME Workstation OS
I completely agree with this. As a programmer HUD is the only thing keeping me on unity. Gnome 3 is _way_ more stable on all of my computers and I prefer it aesthetically.
icarus127··on Valve’s Newell: Windows 8 “catastrophe” driving Valve to embrace Linux
Depends on what you mean by better hardware. The specs will probably be better, I have a Thinkpad and it would have cost me twice as much for an equivalent Macbook. That said, the build quality of the Thinkpad isn't even close to the MacBook, it just depends on what's important to you. For me, an aluminium case isn't worth $1500, and I don't really want to be seen with an Apple product anyway :)
icarus127··on Joe Armstrong: Why OO Sucks
"Me, not really interested in what people who never wrote any widely used software consider more what and less what."

This argument is getting really really really old. Anyone with 5 minutes and a working internet connection can find hundreds of successful widely used applications written with a focus on immutability, either at the language level or the design level.

icarus127··on Fish: Finally, a command line shell for the 90s
I'm wondering about the answer to #1 as well. After trying this out for a bit there's nothing obvious and there are definitely things I miss.
icarus127··on Stopwatch with only CSS3 - No javascript
I am wondering the same thing. Aside from being an impressive CSS3 demo what are the practical implications here? Will this make my site load faster compared to a js version? Will it likely be more responsive?
icarus127··on You, Too, Can Be on the Cutting Edge of Functional Programming Research
I'm honestly surprised to see people make this claim still. I only pay substantial attention to the Haskell community and there are a lot of high quality non trival projects built in Haskell. As another comment mentioned, Yesod is one, but there are also Happstack and Snap for web frameworks. Leksah is a functional but still very early IDE, Gloss is a great data visualization toolkit, Threadscope is a nice tool for postmortem program analysis, Yi is a Alpha/Beta stage Emacs/Vi clone. The list goes on, there are also (literally) 100's of libraries for doing all sorts of things that have nothing to do with glorified calculators.

And that's just Haskell, I know that the Clojure folks are doing lots of interesting stuff, and the Erlang folks too. I honestly have no idea what is being done in F# but I assume it's being supported for a reason.

I don't think anyone has _proven_ that FP strictly better than imperative style (though I think it is). However, I think it's been amply proven that it's at least _as good as_ imperative programming. The argument that no one has ever built more than a glorified calculator hasn't been true for a long long time.

icarus127··on Poll: What is your primary operating system
In my experience this hasn't been true of (some distributions of) Linux in several years. I've talked to a lot of people who hold this opinion and they generally haven't tried Linux in 5+ years.
icarus127··on Show HN: Hackershelf. Community curated collection of legally free books
I would also add an option to link directly to the book as well as the book homepage. Occasionally books are legally available from the authors but not directly available on the book's website. (For example, 'The Haskell Road to Maths' which I just added.)
icarus127··on Startup dudes: Cut the sexist crap
A lot of the comments here compare this to saying a man is sexy and conclude "it sounds a little weird, it's out of place in a professional setting."

This completely misses the point that in our culture women are frequently (practically _always_) objectified sexually in some way. There's a gulf between what it means to call a man sexy and what it means to call a woman sexy.

I think this is what men so often completely miss. The male equivalent of this is not "John’s one of the smartest guy I know, and I thought that he was a perfect pick for the role of moderator. When we selected John and he said yes, he was a handsome single man. And since that time, he’s become a handsome married man, and so I wanted his lucky new spouse to stand up"

it's something closer to: John’s one of the smartest guy I know, and I thought that he was a perfect pick for the role of moderator. When we selected John and he said yes, he's a single man with just has a gigantic penis. And since that time, he’s become a married man with a gigantic penis, and so I wanted his lucky new spouse, who gets all that in bed, to stand up"

It's not 'out of place' it's appalling that something like this is acceptable _anywhere_.
