Heck the NSA backdoored our head of states phones - if “NSA wants my data” is your threat model you are pretty much cooked everywhere. Even if you host on your own server and operate everything yourself it’s no big secret that the NSA is listening in on the node/isp level

icantevenhold··on An Alien Mind
IMO it’s hard to see how we would even end up in such a situation given we actually developed AGI. I’m sure a sufficiently intelligent - even if alien - mind can grasp how utterly stupid and useless wars are and take steps to prevent them ever occurring again.
icantevenhold··on An Alien Mind
In what scenario would it be rational to unleash complete and utter permanent nuclear destruction of all life (including artificial) life on earth?

Not only is policing not immune against perfidy, but I would argue perfidy is built into the police system as a core tenet. There is a lot of widely available evidence

We should break these companies apart - they should not have that level of power.

icantevenhold··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
Nah but be a little bit more specific than just sprinkling random FUD - what is the relationship and why is it problematic ?
icantevenhold··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
No one is saying that every US company is an evil data hungry entity and EU companies are saints.

But fact of the matter is that the US is rapidly sliding into totalitarianism and at the same time US tech companies have an hu huge influence worldwide.

I commend any alternative that comes from outside the US and also offers an “open source” selfhosted option.

icantevenhold··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
Mistral OCR is really good and their small models are great for simple translations, I use them regularly.

Of course I’m not always on the most bleeding edge forefront of the latest hyped model so there might be better alternatives, but I’m happy with what they provide

icantevenhold··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
This means exactly what?

I think you would be hard pressed to find any relevant tech company that doesn’t have a relationship with the Saudis or is funded by them - or any government for that matter…

icantevenhold··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
Tbh there is much more regulatory pressure on EU AI companies than US/China - of course you can only use local models which Mistral actually releases unlike the US alternatives.

So out of all the bad options this still seems to be one of the best

What does this responsibility mean in practice?

Like what are the actual real consequences if it turns out your code is bad or whatever? I assume you get banned from contributing?

I couldn’t immediately find any more information on what this all means in practice

icantevenhold··on Get your Windows license refund
Tbh I worked in customer service for a long time and almost always we would give a refund for whatever the customers asked except in rare cases.

And exactly like you said if the customer cares enough to reach out, just give them what they want. Best case they are super happy and recommend you and if you don’t comply they might go ballistic and do all kinds of stuff that will damage the business way beyond what the refund costs (very little)

icantevenhold··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
At the same time you’re underestimating it. Before covid almost no small businesses would offer card payment; now it’s common.

Sure there are some that are against digital payments and they won’t accept Wero neither, but I would argue the number is very small. And sure in bars/clubs/nightlife it’s cash only but that also won’t change - it’s for tax reasons.

People don’t like PayPal and only use it for the lack of a better alternative. EC is widely used and I bet that Wero will be as well.

icantevenhold··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
Nah I sunk many thousands of hours into these accounts; definitely not a small cost. Sure I could get a new account and pay twice for the game I already purchased multiple times - that would’ve ground my gears too
icantevenhold··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
I was forced to create multiple as part of the mojang migration - truly a nightmarish experience to use their AuthN, haven’t seen something quite as bad since
icantevenhold··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
Thanks for sharing that, and I think it’s a bit more complex comment but just my thoughts from the top of my drunk head:

I think most of the sub cultures you mentioned are now firmly in the mainstream culture - it might just be my bubble/bias - but gay/black/furry/genderfluid/fandom/rave/techno culture is nowadays so prevalent that it doesn’t even register as something unusual.

To me that is a huge difference to 10-15 years+ ago and tumblr besides the chans is definitely one of the places that drove this change; also all the other significant social media’s of that era also had an influence of course. But the anonymity that 4chan provided was kind of unique and so the more extreme/unusual cultures gravitated there I think. Tumblr was special too for sure.

icantevenhold··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
100%

It’s really hard to predict what becomes relevant - I would have never guessed that the “chad/stacy/virgin” archetypes are now so common place that even my grandma knows what it means.

Whereas other huge memes from back then like EFG never got popular.

icantevenhold··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
“Winning” in Cuba would also be very difficult. Sure Venezuela looked cool but what really changed?
icantevenhold··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
Liminal places like 4chan are upstream to mainstream culture/sentiment.

Most of the incel, anime, doomed, and bro culture that was prevalent / nascent there 15-20 years ago is now super mainstream.

icantevenhold··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Why should they?

Cuba is completely insignificant beyond some ideological value.

icantevenhold··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
If I have the choice of being tracked by my government or a private profit driven company I’ll choose the former any day.

The company will sell all data to my government anyway if prompted.

Of course no tracking at all is the best option and I’m a huge proponent of cash - but it’s not always practical.
