icantevenhold··on Microsoft abandons personal AI chatbot race with Copilot reboot
While I would like it to be different M$ is far from destroyed. Quite the opposite from my POV it looks far stronger than 10-20 years ago.

The reality is that most users and consumers don’t care about quality, accuracy or functionality at all.

YMD and DMY i can understand; MDY is just insane, who came up with that.
icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
I don’t follow that logic. Because there was a law against its efficient?
icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Gotcha - yea I think it’s a good idea to try out these things. I just hope it doesn’t become a ideological fight to make something work at any cost to fit a certain narrative (same goes for renewables of course)
icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Thanks for sharing those links, very interesting.

I guess ultimately the nuclear vs renewables discussion is coloured a lot by feelings nowadays.

Resources like this help a lot to form a more nuanced understanding grounded in reality - but otoh I have to admit that a lot of this goes over my head - like even trying to understand how the economy works around this is mind boggling complex. I’ll need a deeper look to understand it better and build a more informed opinion tbh

icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Fair - but using new (unproven) technology imo only increases the cost/time/risk overall?
icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Aren’t SMRs essentially unproven? I think only Russia and China built some working facilities, and the rest is still under construction.

I mean anything could happen but seems like a long shot

icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
The government was elected by the people - if they disagree with this decision it will have consequences in the next election.

I think the public opinion and sentiment has changed quite significantly since 2011 when the last referendum was held.

The current Italian government is massively populist so they wouldn’t do this if they thought people would disagree.

I don’t see any problem with the democratic process here - sure it’s a flawed system but I believe it’s still the best we came up with so far

icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Idk we can import uranium from lots of places; i think currently mostly from Canada.

But I just don’t get why it’s being discussed at all - its obviously so much more expensive and time consuming to build than the alternatives

icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Floating nuclear plants next to a city sound like a recipe for disaster
icantevenhold··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
As someone who thinks nuclear is both less efficient and much more expensive than renewable energies - would you mind sharing a bit why this makes you happy?

Since all plants in Italy are closed since the 90s won’t it take decades and billions of tax euros to get them back operational again?

Could also be YYMMDD In most of Europe it would be DDMMYY - but seeing how the English still measure stuff in feet and inches I wouldn’t be surprised if they have some illogical way of structuring the dates as well

To be able to play retro games on current hardware/OS?

Why does it always need to be so complicated - I have zero interest in learning about these legacy platforms but I definitely want to play some nostalgic games.

Mindboggling that you see this as a negative and even want to kick out people to “protect” the community

icantevenhold··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
Whether anything a perfectly simulated human brain (or other organism see the fruit fly simulated brain) does is actually real - in the same sense it’s real for you and me - is still up for debate i think.

Assuming it’s possible to perfectly simulate a human brain

icantevenhold··on How Hacker News ranking works: scoring, controversy, and penalties (2013)
I don’t think it’s much more complicated, they just tweaked it a little. I think the underlying system is still very simple
icantevenhold··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
For what it’s worth i think the Bi Nuu poster you share here as reference for something badly designed looks really cool.

Poster design like any visual or artistic field will always cater to conflicting individual tastes - for some it looks great, others hate it.

I like Art Nouveau but a lot of stuff in that style looks kitschy to me.

icantevenhold··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Russia is waging an active war of aggression against Ukraine and has its sights set on the rest of Europe (countries that they feel belong to the Russian empire just as they did during USSR).

So yea I believe and actually support the EI pushing back and helping Ukraine against warmongers who have sacrificed hundreds of thousands of their own citizens on the frontline - for what exactly?

The war could be over tomorrow if they would just let go of their imperial ambitions - but of course Putin wants to immortalise himself as Russian emperor.

icantevenhold··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
None of the cases were proven is a bold claim.

It’s hard to prove these things of course but you have to ask yourself who benefits most from these kind of attacks and sabotage? Who benefits from a weakened and infighting Europe?

Hybrid warfare is by definition hard to attribute

icantevenhold··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
Yea our lives are too convenient and too much filled with useless stuff that no one really needs anyway - and like other comments pointed out the goal is not to replace petroleum 100% immediately - any reduction would already go a long way.

Seeing that we use about 2/3 of the total for transportation fuel it’s not like we need most of it to build the renewable infrastructure - that’s more like a drop in the bucket.

Most petroleum gets used to propel vehicles, to heat buildings, and to produce electricity - and it’s definitely not without alternative there

icantevenhold··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
Yes but it’s fine we have way too much of everything anyway
icantevenhold··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
You can definitely replace petroleum for many of the things you listed - or find alternative technologies that don’t require it. You can live without plastic bags or plastic clothes for instance.

It’s just that a lot of companies (and people) get very rich from it and they invest A LOT into making sure that petroleum alternatives are not viable.

Of course there are some things were petroleum cant be easily substituted but I would argue the vast majority of use cases doesnt require it.

Energy is probably the most important and there it’s laughable easy to replace.

Only way to find out is to do some testing yourself i think.
