what experience do you have with writing c++? what is the last large project you completed with it? i'm not a huge fan of c++, but it has been the foundation of an extremely large number of wildly successful and pervasive projects.
ibebrett··on Java Doesn’t Suck
all of his points except for one are related to the jvm in general, which most people agree doesn't suck, and then when it is time to address java he just says "scala, clojure.. are great" Yes, thats the point. The JVM is well liked, but Java as a language is not, and I don't think he did much to change anyones opinion.
ibebrett··on What We Learned From 40 Female YC Founders
cool and socially acceptable is not the same thing.
ibebrett··on What We Learned From 40 Female YC Founders
yes, and no. i still think that without exploring you are not going to find things way out of your comfort zone. sometimes its not "weakness" in your tools that should inspire you. you can write perfectly great stuff with imperative languages, but at some point you may want to try a pure functional language to get a perspective shift. its more so to see if there may be a better way, or a different way to do things. i am very glad i took two courses in haskell, despite the fact that i don't ever use it for work, just because it has changed the way i think about certain things and given names to concepts i only had a vague notion of before.
ibebrett··on What We Learned From 40 Female YC Founders
its hard if you don't have the context to know this though. you may never think what you are using is insufficient if you don't get out of your comfort zone.
ibebrett··on My boys love 1986 computing
multithreading programming is not "super easy." threads/parallelism give us power, but it definitely increased complexity and makes it harder to reason about the behavior of programs.
ibebrett··on A Cautionary Tale of Learning to Code
i can touch type just fine. I'm not threatened by the concept of touch typing, I am making the case that its a waste of time to try and learn to touch type another keyboard map. While it may have some benefit, there are literally thousands of things you can do that will be much more useful than learning to touch type dvorak.
ibebrett··on A Cautionary Tale of Learning to Code
let me put it this way. i have never met a programmer who's productivity was at all based on their typing speed.
ibebrett··on A Cautionary Tale of Learning to Code
I suppose so, it just seems that the odds that you may need to work on a machine that isn't setup for you is probably going to be pretty high at some point. I agree that RSI is probably something we should avoid, but other than that things like typing speed have zero effect (in my experience).
ibebrett··on A Cautionary Tale of Learning to Code
They are more of an understanding of what theoretically can be computed, rather than anything to do with how to do it or how to efficiently do it. I study lots of theoretical computer science, but it doesn't intersect with software engineering much. Software engineering tends to more relate to project management, operations research etc.
ibebrett··on A Cautionary Tale of Learning to Code
I have been programming for 10+ years (and really more like 15 if you count being a teenager coding), and I change languages/editors/distros all the time. I have never switched keyboard layout (this honestly to me sounds like the biggest waste of time I have ever heard of). I am just saying that its not about finding some random piece of technology that you stick with forever, 90% of the time its using the right tool for the job, or contributing to something that already has momentum.

Honestly, this task is something that most people learn to do and just do. It's not nearly as complex as you are trying to a make it out to be.
ibebrett··on Toxo, the cysts in our brains from cats, can improve self-control (2013)
do you really think that the people who get the parasite are knowingly eating pieces of cat feces?
ibebrett··on Germany’s great tuition fees U-turn
Right but a huge amount of students are taking loans (because they cant afford school at the moment) for college so they can pay it back when they have increased job prospects. It doesnt make sense to spend 60K on school if you will never be able to pay it back.
ibebrett··on Germany’s great tuition fees U-turn
That sounds perfect to me (an american who tends to like learning through MOOCs)
ibebrett··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
Yes I agree, there are great classes all over the place, and there might be some gems where you least expect it, but for the most part the quality of the classes are going to go down as you go to worse and worse schools.
ibebrett··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
Yes for sure, I am not trying to pick on public schools, its just that VAST majority of schools are not top level, and there are thousands of bad computer science classes being taught.
ibebrett··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
the quality of the instructional materials, mastery, and level of difficulty yes.
ibebrett··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
Sorry, wrote that in a rush. I meant "compared to the level of classes taken by some of my coworkers"
ibebrett··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
Yes I am assuming that. As someone who attended a small state school compared to the level of some of the coworkers taken by classmates at the top schools it is like night and day. Trust me the machine learning class at stanford is better than the one at eastern ct state university (for example)
ibebrett··on Ask HN: What DB to use for huge time series?
That is why you seriously audit your tools and why many in the industry avoid Mongo like the plague. Controlling the byes that gets written to a file is actually not simple at all, and its a huge research problem as far as file systems of databases. I'm just saying, I don't think writing your own db is every a very good idea, unless it is SO simple that you would barely call it a DB.
ibebrett··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
The thing is I'd rather take a course from a top instructor even at a massive scale, than to take a poor course made by a guy who doesn't have any real business teaching the class. There is no reason every tiny state school should be recreating a bad machine learning class (example) when you can take a good one from a good instructor. If you go to even more basic topics (intro to comp sci), the quality you will get from having a TA teach a class to a lecture hall to a top instructor teaching over a MOOC will be like night and day.
ibebrett··on Entrepreneur is a silly word, and you sound silly when you call yourself one
I have never in my life heard it pronounced without the -pre- sound.
ibebrett··on Ask HN: What DB to use for huge time series?
I wouldn't recommend trying to do this yourself. Of course you can make something that kind of works, but making a resilient production ready database that is fault tolerant and scales is a lot harder than writing to a file.

ibebrett··on Diaspora social network cannot stop IS posts
I completely agree. That doesn't mean its a good thing that a dangerous group has a new tool
ibebrett··on Diaspora social network cannot stop IS posts
There is a difference between a forum for the free exchange of ideas, and a decentralized system that can be used to plan and share murders/(horrible other things). It is totally legal (in the usa) for you to get together with your friends and talk about whatever you want, but it is not legal for you to get together and plan an overthrow of the government, or a murder. It's not good that a dangerous group has a new tool.
