ianwalter··on Apple Removes Infowars from Podcast Directory
It's crazy to me that they banned pornographic apps from the app store but still let this hot garbage be listed on their platform for so long.
ianwalter··on The Surface Book 2 is everything the MacBook Pro should be
It's a nice piece of hardware in general but give me a break with that title.
ianwalter··on Show HN: Maskmail – anonymous email address service
The convenience factor is definitely there. A browser plugin that automatically creates an email address that you can later turn on/off with a couple clicks instead of going through the domain setup in gmail (or in my case fastmail)? I'd be interested in it.
ianwalter··on Show HN: Maskmail – anonymous email address service
Yea I would want this too. I think it makes more sense than Maskmail just adding a bunch of other domains that can get blocked too.
ianwalter··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
Just in case people are looking for one more alternative, it looks like no one has mentioned codegiant.io yet.
ianwalter··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
This is a little unfortunate but I think theres a possibility this could turn out to be a positive thing for both MS and GH. I hope so at least.
ianwalter··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
Cool, for sure, thanks for the response!
ianwalter··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
Sourcegraph is great, but I had to disable the browser plugin because it opens a new tab on every github search. So annoying.
ianwalter··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
Yea, Microsoft should acquire sourcegraph too.
ianwalter··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
Yea but I don't think it's continued focus that will help here. Apple has continued it's modus operandi and quality has decreased like you mentioned. Granted, acquiring GitHub is most likely not the right fix, but I think something about Apple's particular way of operating is holding it back.
ianwalter··on Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks
Apple. I know it's not Apple's style but imagine if Apple started expanding outside of it's bubble like Microsoft has. If they really went all in it would be amazing.
ianwalter··on Ask HN: What websites do you check everyday?
Hacker News, Echo JS, Product Hunt
ianwalter··on Reports from Nest Secure customers who are unable to arm/disarm or lock/unlock
Ok, I guess I just assumed since Nest is a Google company... but I can check that. Thanks for the tip!
ianwalter··on Reports from Nest Secure customers who are unable to arm/disarm or lock/unlock
Does anybody know if this has anything to do with GKE? Last night right before I noticed the Nest app was unresponsive, I noticed my entire Kubernetes cluster was randomly brought down. At first I thought it was for some kind of maintenance, but thought it was strange that it wasnt brought down gracefully. I still have no idea what happened.
ianwalter··on Docker is a dangerous gamble
> If you are using Docker and Kubernetes for an ordinary website, then please stop. There are simpler ways to run a website. We’ve been building websites for 25 years now, and we didn’t need Docker.

Sure, if that's the only kind of workload you ever plan on running. No one is really doing this though so this is just useless outrage. This is like Fox News for developers.

ianwalter··on DigitalOcean Introduces Kubernetes Product
I resisted Kubernetes for a long time, but now that I've started using it, I think it's definitely the way to go.
ianwalter··on Be likeable or get fired
I don't think his expectations were unreasonable and I don't blame him for not wanting to spend years of his life slowly trying to fix a dysfunctional team/process. I know it's not easy, but companies should do a better job at hiring so that both parties time isn't wasted.
ianwalter··on Beyond CI/CD: GitLab's DevOps Vision (2017)
What about Helm?
ianwalter··on Ask HN: Using Kotlin for web application back end
Say what now? You’re saying npm is a disaster? That is surprising.
ianwalter··on Show HN: Shiori – Simple self hosted bookmarks manager
But then they are two unrelated posts with two separate discussions. The whole point is that they are related and in the same discussion. It's more simple this way.
ianwalter··on Ask HN: 5 months and counting waiting for Coinbase customer support. Advice?
I'm in the same situation. I'd even be willing to pay a much higher transaction fee for them to resolve it, but they don't seem to care. I switched to Gemini and have been much happier with them.
ianwalter··on GitLab 10.4 released
Please do replace my local editor.
ianwalter··on Leap: An Online Community for Women
Cool, I disagree with your conclusions but it would be nice if there was a better way to correct social imbalances. They definitely don't seem to fix themselves!
ianwalter··on Leap: An Online Community for Women
This is smart, natural, and a good use of tech. I hope your community succeeds.
ianwalter··on Leap: An Online Community for Women
Why do you want to be included? What would be the point of it if you were?
ianwalter··on Leap: An Online Community for Women
I am curious: have you spent a lot of time thinking about this or was this the first reaction that popped into your head?
ianwalter··on Even God Would Get Fired as an Active Investor (2016)
He died for your alpha!
ianwalter··on Uber CEO Plays with Fire
To be fair Unroll.me shows you ads in their emails to you so a user may think thats how they monetise and be ok with that. Its another thing altogether when the company sells all of your email data directly to buyers.
ianwalter··on Uber CEO Plays with Fire
Yea I'm certainly not eager to sign up for another service like this after finding out that the last one I used sold my data. It's getting really tough to trust third party services with your data these days.
ianwalter··on The Mac Pro Lives
There doesn't seem to be a monitor that offers a large display (27-32"), 5K resolution, and USB-C ports with enough power to charge a 15" MacBook Pro while using it like a "Pro". The 5K UltraFine comes just short of this but I also worry about it's build quality. Other nice to haves would be 2 thunderbolt 3 inputs so you could for example use 2 displays through daisy-chaining. Maybe GSync and HDR for gamers and game developers.
