More fraud waste and abuse. Creating redundant projects is one of the best arguments libertarian types have against our current system, where the same bridge gets built by one party, the next party tears it down and builds a new bridge to score points, rinse repeat. I am amazed a president could be more wasteful and terrible than Biden but good holy here we are.
Do you recall universities going after the MOOCs? I do. Do you think students benefit from smaller class sizes and more one on one time with professors? If you ask a professor what qualifies them do they say their research or their pedagogical skills? Do people pursue higher education opportunities at the same rate when no degree or certificate is offered? What happened to MOOCs anyway? If Harvard is so great for the nation, why not 10x its enrollment? I’ve probably thought about this much longer than you have.
In the USA we have intellectual property laws. Americans who “hack” (write computer code) for a living do so because of those laws. In communist China, they do not believe in intellectual property. People abuse the term “hacker” to mean followers of Ayn Rand, because people like Thiel and Marc Andreassan are uber CatoBros. I think hackers have to actually write code. Anyway, I know about the cypherpunks and all that.
Replace the profs with ai. Force every student to do a three hour one on one interview test with the ai prof to demonstrate mastery and get a final grade. Have other ai proctor. Replace homework with similar “ai sessions” where the student is guided by ai and given specific exercises tailored to the students learning trajectory and personal profile. Students can and will learn better with ai “professors” than they do now. The problem is that higher education is not about learning ultimately. The problem is ai in education is that ai exposes the lie, it was never about learning, it was about credentials, money and control.
So a data center pays the same taxes as a homeowner, foot for foot? It seems unfair at first, but then it occurs to me that data centers would not be so desirable if they were not paying higher taxes. If land value tax helped to pop the data center bubble it would make the more off-putting aspects (organic farming is a less efficient use of land than factory farms) more palatable. Why not have a hybrid approach, where the local community can decide to apply different types of tax systems to different types of land and land uses?
5000 people skip over an obvious flame bait thread. 1000 people read but don’t comment at all. 7 people who feel they’ve solved the problem of which laptop is best and want to tell everyone why they should switch to Linux/Mac or why Linux/Mac sucks post obvious comments about Mac hardware and nix freedom. But “the sentiment is rampant on hn” is the take away. The sentiment that is rampant on hn is that there is a sentiment rampant on hn.
We all know this happened. What I find hilarious in the discussion here is that everyone also knows it was caused by AI replacing humans on the battlefield, but because so many here have deeply conflicted interests they pretend they don’t know and act as though some human somewhere did this intentionally. Greed really corrupts the dialog around military use of AI.
