Thanks for the bug report.

We have an algorithm that looks at a large number of factors (number of reviews, each reviewer's unique denotation system, number of hotels in a destination, sentiment, etc) and calculates the number.

We'll be growing, don't worry. Today is day two. :)

What do you mean?
iamdann··on Show HN: TripExpert – Professional Hotel Reviews
Yeah, that's so weird! We've heard that from a few people. We're currently looking into it. Neither of us can find any history of the domain being used for anything adult or porn related. So strange.

Our designer was someone that my co-founder had worked with before. And thanks for the tip about price sorting.

We don't list any hotels with a score lower than 60, which means every hotel is a quality hotel.

Thanks for the feedback. We're definitely still working on perfecting the search, so this is helpful.

My co-founder and I actually met at a hackathon a few years ago and worked on an early version of the site. It's very exciting to finally launch!

My co-founder Andrew is a lawyer-turned-developer. I'm a former tech journalist (Laptop Mag, The Verge).

Yup, we've got an API. Shoot me an email at dann@tripexpert.com!
iamdann··on Google Wallet Card
Meh, just like a Paypal debit card.
iamdann··on Off
If this was the first event after Jobs' death, your point would be more valid.
iamdann··on Ask HN: Has anyone here self-published a book? Any advice?
I second the recommendation for Nathan Barry's book Authority.
iamdann··on Ask HN: What's the most creative use of IFTTT you've seen?
Even better than IFTTT for weather is the iOS app Dark Sky. I have it set to give me a push notification whenever it starts raining in my area. THAT'S a useful feature so I remember to grab an umbrella if I don't notice the rain yet.
iamdann··on Ask HN: What's the most creative use of IFTTT you've seen?
I get an email if the weather shows it'll rain tomorrow. That's kinda nice. Also, anything I star on Google Reader saves to Instapaper, but that wont' be useful very much longer.
iamdann··on Poll: Do you use your real identity on HN?
I use my real name for everything.
iamdann··on Hacker News apps
Did HNPod just fade away? I had forgotten about it and I see there haven't been any episodes in a while.
iamdann··on A Day in the Life of a Freelance Journalist
As a journalist myself, this is extremely depressing (although unsurprising). It's also why I'm working hard to expand my portfolio of skills.
iamdann··on Magnet Implants Can Actually be Pretty Annoying
People with magnet implants have had MRIs, though.

Additionally, people with magnet implants have successfully had MRIs, too.

iamdann··on Magnet Implants Can Actually be Pretty Annoying
Yes, very true. I think the main difference that I would imagine would be psychological. The sensation of having something external vibrating against your skin, as with a magnet superglued to a finger, is different than the sensations being internalized.

When my magnet responds to something, it feels like I am responding to something. I don't feel a sense of separation from the magnet.

That being said, supergluing a magnet to a finger is probably the closest one can get without getting the actual procedure. Which obviously isn't for everyone, heh.

This has been suggested a lot. I haven't personally tried it, but I have friends with magnet implants who have and they said it was quite different, actually.

By "cyberware" do you mean something like this? https://idea.popcount.org/2012-07-28-am-i-a-cyborg-now/

This is a great summary: "Having a sense for something that is invisible to everyone else can mean that many well-designed things are very poorly designed for you."

Thanks!

Yup, just like people with cheap "prison" tattoos.
iamdann··on Get 50GB of Box free for life
I've already got a 50GB Box account through a free promo a while ago...but the account has file size limitations unless you pay for an upgrade. I'd assume this deal has the same restrictions. I forget the upload size limit, but it was enough to keep me from actually using them for my personal needs.

I pay $25/year for 25GB of Amazon cloud storage, which includes unlimited music storage and no upload limits. I'm happy with that deal for now.

iamdann··on UX Idea: Real Turn-by-Turn Navigation
Unrelated, but I used to live right there for about 4 years. Always fun to see stuff like that.
iamdann··on Developer of Tweetie launches LetterPress iPhone Game
Do we know how long ago it was launched? Sometimes it doesn't populate in the app store at all for the first few hours, even though it can be accessed and downloaded from direct links.

I love the UI (as I expected) but I feel like the market for these types of multi-player apps is waning.

Best of luck, though!

iamdann··on How I Simplified My Life
And that's why the self storage business in NYC is booming.

I had to quickly move out of my Brooklyn apartment a few years back, and just had everything I owned tossed into a storage unit, except what fit in my car, and stayed with friends for a couple weeks. When I got a new place, I was surprised to realize I didn't really need, or even want, 90% of that stuff. I ended up waiting a year and then just junking all of it.

It was really liberating to realize I didn't need it, then actually get rid of all of it. Regardless of what I buy or own in the future, I'll never forget the freedom of not having anything, and I'll never get too attached.

iamdann··on Tools, Tips, and Tricks to Hack Your Workflow
I guess I use the term "workflow" more loosely than some. I consider keeping on top of my finances to be a workflow. Same with following my app sales, etc.

I agree that Dark Sky is the loosest relation, but if I know it's raining, it prevents me from doubling back to grab an umbrella, which used to happen to me all the time.

iamdann··on Show HN: Redesigned Openera.com - your automated email assistant.
Why is the pricing page still almost completely lorum ipsum? Did you mean to have an HN launch of your redesign without it being done?

EDIT: Nevermind, I guess? I somehow to got /pricing not /plans-pricing
